  1. Photographs are good. very few speices of doves are discussed. there should be more emphasis on new mututations of doves.there is always confusion between pigeon and doves and this book also does not clear the confusion.

2 comments about A Guide To Eclectus Parrots: Their Management, Care and Breeding.

  1. Published by Australian Birdkeeper, a highly respected publisher of avian books and magazines. This book is subtitled "Their Management, Care & Breeding" and it covers those topics quite well. It does not have extensive information on identifying subspecies. Contents: Introduction; Health of the Eclectus Parrot (Individual Characteristics; The Healthy Eclectus; Nutrition; Feather Picking; Health Aspects of the Newly Aquired Eclectus; Stress Reduction; Stress Reduction By Good Aviary Management; Stress Reduction By a Varied Diet; Seed Sprouting Procedure; Recognition of Stress and Illness; Breeding Success and Stress Reduction; Breeding Failure and Infertility; Vitamin A Deficiency; Breeding Failure and Disease; Breeding Failure and Incompatibility; Breeding Failure and Physical Problems); The Main Diseases of the Eclectus (Symptoms of Disease; Plumage Problems; Respiratory Problems; Gastrointestinal Symptoms; Eye Symptoms; Main Diseases in Adults; Diseases in Baby Eclectus; Symptoms of Disease in the Hand Reared Eclectus; Health of the Pet Eclectus); Brief Word on the Incubation of Eclectus Eggs; Management (Housing - Suspended Cages, Aviaries; Feeding; Breeding - Compatible Pairs, Mating, Nest Boxes, Egg Laying, Hatching and Chick Development); Artificial Incubation; Hand Rearing Eclectus Parrots - Bird Nursery, Brooders, Eclectus Chicks, Containers, Temperature, Feeding, Weighing, Weaning, Stress, Dietary Essentials); Eclectus As Pets. Highly recommeneded.

  2. This book does have some good information some pretty good photography as well showing health problems to look for as well as some very beautiful healthy birds. There is some good information on diseases well worth reading. It is however rather s short book for the price.

The book does need a good editor for the next time it is published. The reader will find the same sentence pasted into the text over and over I would guess as the result of abuse of a word processor.

3 comments about Parrot (Reaktion Books - Animal).

  1. This is a remarkable book I recommend to everyone who has a parrot or even just "likes" parrots.

Carter discusses some history of humans sharing life with parrots, but this book is more about the parrot's place in our psyche; its mythology and its importance to us as a species (ours and the parrot). We need the parrot more than the parrot needs us.

As one reviewer said, read when you're likely to be uninterrupted because Carter does not spoon feed this to you. But your efforts will be richly and doubly rewarded, and you'll never look at a bundle of feathers the same way again.

  2. It would be a good idea to plan on reading this book at a time when you have little or no distractions. I found myself having to re-read a paragraph or even a page if I was interrupted, but I am sure you will find this book as fascinating as I did. See my website for full review.

  3. I ordered this book months ago because I'm writing one of my own on parrots and thought it would be helpful in my research. It's much more than I expected. The color plates are fabulous, it's rare and unusual information incredibly well done.

I'd recommend this to anyone -- not just parrot people (all of whom should have this). If you're fascinated by things you don't know and have an inquisitive nature this is for you. Check out the rest of the series they look equally interesting (ant, fox, spider, whale).

2 comments about Encyclopedia of Lories.

  1. Written by a true expert -- Rosemary Low -- who has worked as curator of 2 of the world's largest parrot collections and now breeds lories at her home in the U.K. From the back of the book: "Rosemary Low brings together, for the first time, detailed and absorbing information on lories' natural habits and aviculture. The first part of the book is an encyclopedia covering nearly 100 different subjects from aviaries to conservation and from folklore to next sites. In the second part, the biology of every species is described with detailed descriptions of plumage, chicks, eggs, habitat, conservation, and more. A special section includes distribution maps and information on locatilies where lories occur. The encylopedia's large reference section is a valuable source of futher reading. The book is a riot of color, with 140 color photographs." Vital for the pet owner or breeder. The information on diet is so important. FAR surpasses any other lory book -- I've read them all.

  2. This is a must have for any lory enthusist, from pet owner to breeder. Topics within the book are easily found and have been written in a clear and concise manner. In addition to the text, the clear and colorful pictures are worth the price of the book.

1 comments about Lovebirds (Animal Planet Pet Care Library).

  1. The first sentence in this book by Julie Mancini is "Welcome to the exciting and fun-filled world of lovebird ownership!" The book starts off with some great information about these entertaining little birds.

The author explains the history of lovebirds - how they got their name - when they first became pets - the wild or normal colours and the newer colour mutations - and talks about the different lovebird species.

I would recommend this book to new and potential lovebird owners, although experienced lovebird owners may also find useful advice as well.

5 comments about The Guide to Owning a Quaker Parrot (Guide to Owning).

  1. Have been pleased with the quality and content of information; good resource guide for new Quaker parrot owners.

  2. If you are researching the Quaker, as a previous bird owner, this may not be the book for you. However, if you are a first time bird owner, I would give it 5 stars. I would have preferred more specific species information. Thank you.

  3. i ordered this book and received it long before i even expected. the book is in like - new condition. i recommend this seller to anyone who wants quick service and you get exactly what they are advertising.

  4. Great pictures, makes you want to run right out and purchase your parrot! Very informative also. I enjoyed it.

  5. If you are oriented towards a quaker but don't know much about parrots yet, this book is the best to have a quick resume of everything is important to know. Takes little time to read it all but at the end your ideas will be a lot clearer, you'll know the essential to make your decision about getting a companion quaker or not; and in case you've decided to go for it, the essential to take care of your quaker and make it healthy and happy. In a second time you can deepen in your knowledge with more complex (but potentially confusing for a novice) books on the subject.
The text is quite objective about the level of attention and cares they require but... *beware*, the photos are so endearing that you are not much likely to resist the urge to get one of this cute and intelligent birds right away and start cuddling it...
