3 comments about Taming and Training Conures.

  1. This book was probably good for the time it was written (1981, according to the copyright), but it is really substandard in light of nearly 2 decades of further research into bird behavior. The first half of the book is about choosing a bird, caging and nutritional requirements, and grooming (wing and nail clipping). The remainder of the book is a cursory look at basic taming (of wild-caught birds, which isn't really an issue since importing birds has been outlawed for several years), and a brief explanation of how to train. If you want a good resource for training, you'd be better off with a more current book on behavior modification (try Mattie Sue Athan's books, for example). This book is mis-titled, and should not pretend to be a real "training" book. On the bright side, it has quite a few wonderful pictures of conures.

  2. This was a good book, however there was more a theatrical feel for the type of training that was covered. Also, it didn't really cover many types of training, more accurately, it suggesting what could be done--often telling you ways of playing up natural instinctive behaviors, verses training new behaviors. Philosophically I didn't agree with much of the approach used, but as with many things, it is how you view your relationship with your companion bird. A good addition to your library in any event. These birds are complex and all of the information you can find should be read.

  3. excellent book! It gives you a lot of good advice to train your new bird pet.

2 comments about The Art Of Cockfighting - A Handbook For Beginners And Old Timers.

  1. i would have made a video review to show how "Get errr done!" this book was but out of respect for them PETA, i withheld my excitement. Great book and i recommend it to anyone that is involved with wrestling or cockfighting..so on and so fourth. I originially bought it for grandma but she can get my next order for it.

  2. Why is Amazon selling books that teach animal torture? Are they that greedy?
This is only one title that teaches cockfighting or dogfighting.
    Sick, sick, sick.

1 comments about Canary Breeding for Beginners - A Practical Guide to the Cult of Canary Breeding, Designed Specially for the Use of the Beginner in the Hobby..

  1. I wouldn't recommend this as a reference book, it is too outdated. Mine doesn't have a date but it is before refrigeration, so that tells you something. But it is highly of interest to the avid canary breeder as a collectible and to see how far we have come in the "cult" of canary breeding, as the book calls it....

1 comments about Getting to Know Your Budgie (Getting to Know Your...).

  1. This is a super little book. Perfect for young kids as an intro to having a pet parakeet (and the mom learned some new things too!). It's written in first person, so the parakeet talks about himself and what it needs to be well cared for. There'a also a sense of humor written into the text, my 5 and seven year olds were cracking up when the narrator bird talked about it being a bit rude to look at its vent. but that it would be ok with him for the sake of checking his health. Great photographs with little bubbles showing what the parakeet is thinking. Highly recommended for any family with children deciding on getting a parakeet for a pet.

4 comments about The Guide to Owning a Cockatiel.

  1. great book! excellent photography, and highly recommended for those who own or those who are interested in aquiring a cockatiel.

  2. Ms. Barrie has a good understanding of cockatiel personalities, color mutations, and training, and this is an OK guide in that regard. However, the book is very outdated regarding diet: Other than the all-important fresh greens, it recommends nothing but seeds, a diet that is guaranteed to greatly reduce your cockatiel's potential lifespan of 30 years and diminsh his health and comfort by leading to illness. This can also be costly and heartbreaking for you.

Seeds are necessary for small birds because they contain enzymes they can't get anywhere else--but a tablespoon a day is plenty. Pellets, table foods, cooked grains and legumes, and fresh fruits and veggies should make up the other 90% of the diet. The book also recommends offering grit, which is no longer recommended by vets and other experts in avian health.

For friendly, accurate, and scientifically current guidance, check out "Birds for Dummies" by Dr. Brian Speer, an excellent avian vet.

  3. This is an excellent book for a new Cockatiel owner. The photos are great, the text is easy to follow. There are a lot of useful tips that make it easy to take care of your new pet. The bok was just what I was looking for.

  4. If you are looking for a Cockatiel book that is very basic, straight to the point, and somewhat blunt, then this is a good choice for a book. But for those who like substance, you might want to try another. Even though you can receive a broad point of view on how to care for your Tiel, I felt that this book just wasn't what I was looking for; too basic. But this book does come with a good explanation on variety of cocktiels, and I absolutely adore the pictures she used.
