2 comments about All About Your Cockatiel (All About Your Pets Series).

  1. Brief, but not dumbed down. It is a good, fast read. It is great if you have kids and cockatiels, cohabiting.

The vocabulary and concepts are more advanced than the large print. However, reading this book together would be a great sharing and growing experience, if you have kids.

They could read it outloud, and you can explain what the words mean, such as egg binding, nutrition, clutch, minerals ... They can expand their vocabulary, and develop their sensitivity toward the needs of other living things.

The large print and concision might also benefit those who love birds, but have a hard time seeing smaller print.

Even if you have no need for the larger print and concision, it is still a useful book.

  2. For those who are new owners of cockatiels, this book is a must have. Don't be put off by its brevity. All the important questions such as, "Is my cockatiel a boy or a girl?" are answered within. Topics such as training and taming, diet, cage space, breeding, and health are dealt with succinctly yet clearly. So whether you've already purchased a feathered bundle of joy or are thinking of getting one, check this book out. The price won't ruffle your feathers.

1 comments about Canaries: How to Take Care of Them and Understand Them (Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. This was my first book about canaries. The author does a wonderful job of explaining the basics. The information apears to be very accurate. Judging by the authors love for these birds, I can't imagine going wrong!...THANK YOU MR. von Frisch!

5 comments about Living With Chickens: Everything You Need to Know to Raise Your Own Backyard Flock.

  1. The recommendations in this book make it a waste of time, especially the nesting box design.
Save your time and money and befriend someone who has healthy chickens. Learn from them.
These men are not as well informed as they think they are.
    Frustrating.

  2. Excellent for those who wish to have a home flock. Very informative on the subject and the "how to" of keeping a small flock.

  3. This is a great introduction to keeping chickens, and I found it very useful.

The author goes through all the basic info you need to know in order to raise chickens. It is a very easy and entertaining read - the author has a great writing style that is enjoyable. It is full of lovely photos that really add to the book. It is a fast read as well.

It is not terribly complete - you will need another source for information once you get into the chicken care part. I would recommend "A Guide to Raising Chickens" by Gail Damerow as a companion to this book. The Damerow book is *very* complete, but it also has the dryness of a textbook and isn't nearly as fun to read [think "dense" and kinda boring].

So, I would recommend buying this book if you are considering raising some chickens because this book will give you all the information you need to make an educated decision. Then, if you do decide to raise some chickens, get the Damerow book in addition to this one so that you have every single detail you need to know.

  4. I have bought several books recently on this topic. This is one of the better ones. Enjoyed the pictures and the inserts in the book. It is just a thorough as all the other books on raising chickens. A good buy for anyone interested in staring a chicken flock. Very nice quality of the book. Probably one of the better of any books you will purchase no just in this topic.

  5. This book has lots of nice pictures, but the information can very easily be obtained from the internet at no cost. not recommended

4 comments about Macaws: Everything About Purchase, Management, Housing, Feeding, Health Care, and Breeding/a Complete Pet Owner's Manual (A Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. The pictures in this book are very nice, but that's it! This book is not worth reading and you would be doing your bird a great injustice if you followed any advice from this person. If you want a good book on parrots try "Parrot Training" by Bonnie Munro Doane.

  2. Of all the books I have read on parrot care, this is perhaps the worst. Particularly terrible is the suggested wing-feather trim, which would lead to a sedentary, unhealthy bird. Much of the advice in the book is contrary to accepted, modern practices. Do not buy it, and if you already own a copy, do the world a favor and destroy it.

  3. As a veterinary technician in an avian hospital, I can tell you that this book gives poor and even dangerous advice concerning the care of macaws and other exotic birds. The avian veterinarians with whom I work have read the book and feel the same way. I would strongly discourage anyone from purchasing this book. Your local avian veterinarian would be much better suited to recommend books which give accurate information about birds and their care. Great photographs are the ONLY benefit of owning this book but hardly worth the false information printed within.

  4. I think this book is excellent for beginners with Macaws and even people who know about them and want to know a little more. It has everything you need to know, in fact the entire series of pet books from Barrons does. I just wish they had a web site...

3 comments about The Duck Stamp Story: Art, Conservation, History : Detailed Information on the Value and Rarity of Every Federal Duck Stamp.

  1. I have never seen my husband so entralled by a book before. I can never get him to sit down for 5 seconds but on Christmas morning, he forgot the rest of his gifts and sat and read this book! I was amazed! It contains history with great pictures and facts and he was actually enjoying himself while reading it!
I highly recommend this book for any person interested in ducks, duck stamps or duck hunting.

  2. This book is beautiful, interesting, and a pleasure to read. I don't hunt, collect stamps or wildlife art, but this is a great book. I am truly enjoying it. I especially like the section on conservation, which details the history of water fowl degradation and protection in the United States.

  3. This is an incredible book for anyone who is interested in ducks, stamps, history, art, conservation, collectables, or Americana. There's the history of duck stamps as it relates to the entire conservation movement. There are interviews with famous people who are themselves duck stamp collectors and avid conservationists. There are beautiful photographs and artwork of past and present duck stamps, as well as other honorable mentions in the annual duck stamp contests. This book is just chock full of information and illustrations. The author has done a great job of wholistically researching the topic into every tangent of related interests. It is the ultimate coffee table book since there is something to interest just about anyone. You'll find that you meant to just browse through it, when before you know it you've read a whole chapter!

2 comments about Bird Care and Training: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.

  1. As far as training is concerned this book serves little more use than the screened wood shavings in the cage. The basic bird care section is similar to just about any of the myriad of other pamphlets available. Used book for sale, only read once,.....

  2. This book includes everything that you need to know to keep parrots as pets. I have referred back to this book many times to answer a question about the care of one of my parrots, and I haven't yet had a question it couldn't answer or direct me to the answer for.

5 comments about Gourmet Bird Food Recipes: For Your Cockatiel, Parrot, and Other Avian Companions (Pet Care Books) (Pet Care Books).

  1. I bought this book when I got my African Grey parrot. Eight years later and I've had to replace it because I got "goop" all over it! I have not only used it all the time, I've bought it as a gift for all my bird loving friends! My grey girl loves all the recipes! I highly recommend this cookbook for all of our avian friends!!!

  2. For anyone who loves to cook for their parrots, this one is a must have.
My birdies have enjoyed every morsel out of here !

  3. Beware! Alot of the recipes have milk and cheese in them. Birds are lactose intolerant so those recipes can make them very ill.

  4. This recipe book was written by three vegetarians, who like many vegetarians need to supplement their diet with large amounts of cheese to get their proteins. These are not bird recipes - but people recipes, that use lots of oil, butter, cream and cheese. One recipe that started off well: "Pasta Salad" p.44, ends up with 16 oz of Italian dressing.

Things like "Tortellini in cream sauce" or "Rotelle and cheezy vegetables" or "Garlic-buttered vermicelli" should not be part of your bird`s diet or even yours if you are health concious.

  5. What first caught my eye was a statement on the back of the book, "If your bird is a member of the parrot family, did you know that your bird has a palate nearly as sophisticated as that of a human?" Those of us who own birds and already know this now have a place to come to.

There are a couple of sections at the beginning of the book that are just overall information, "A Well-Balanced Diet for Your Bird," "Preparing Your Home (Nest) for Life With a Bird," "Baby Bird's Travel Checklist," and one that will tear your heart out, "The Beginning of the Joshua Foundation."

The "Entrees and Side Dishes for You and Your Bird" section looked fun. A lot of the recipes call for cheese, fat, and sugars. Although, I don't think our birds, especially the smaller ones, should have much of this, the recipes could be modified so you are comfortable with them and otherwise might be great as a sometimes treat. Other recipe sections include "Breads and Pastries," "Vegetable and Fruit Dishes," "Potatoes and Eggs," the entrees section, and "Treats."

Sprinkled (pun intended) throughout are a few birdie stories, each of which you will need to have a box of tissues close by to read. An index in the back allows you to look up recipes by main ingredients or recipe title.

The authors have no veterinary background. In fact, all of them are partners in a CPA firm. But they have a love for parrots, especially those in need, and I think have done a good job of putting together a variety of recipes for our birdies with discriminating palates.
