5 comments about The New Cockatiel Handbook: Everything About Purchase, Housing, Care, Nutrition, Behavior, Breeding, and Diseases (New Pet Handbooks).
- this is a good general information book. It will help you get started with your cockateils. It has been very helpful to me.
- I read with interest the review from the "professional" cockatiel person. What seems to be a 'one star' for them happens to be very useful to all of us "non-professionals".
This book has helped beginners and that is what counts. Sometimes, the "experts" are dead wrong when it comes to the simpleness of a book helping the beginning cockatiel owner. This isn't bad, because most of us could give a hoot about genetics and showing your cockatiel at contests. Good book for beginners.
- This book has everything you'd ever want to know about cockatiels. I 1st got it as a Christmas present, about 3 months after I got my bird, a 16 wk. old, female Australian Gray. She is turning 3 in May of 1999. But this book helped me understand her and the way she lives. I wish to train her to speak very soon. The book gives methods on traing & taming of all sorts, a complete food guide & table of dangers, and 5 different floorplans for outdoor aviaries, plus ideas on how to create your own!! For me, it was a life-saver!! Also in the "The New... ...Handbook" series are "The new Dog Handbook" and "The new Paraket Handbook". Many others also are included, plus a series of un-revised books called "The... ...Handbook" This series had manymore species, eventhough "The New... ...Handbook" series is updated, revised, more up-to-date and has all the newest information, ideas and theories from many different scientists. Use it!!
- Having bred and raised cockatiels for 13 years, I can unequivocally state that this book contains little or no helpful information about cockatiels. In fact, there is a great deal of misinformation. For example, the genetics section contains incorrect information regarding the breeding of albino cockatiels, treating albino as if it were one gene instead of a combination of lutino and whiteface. Another good example of Mr. Vriend's use of archaic information is that he recommends peat moss in the nestbox, which can cause fungal growth leading to aspergillosis, which is a serious lung disease.
My recommendation: read a book written by someone who has recently bred cockatiels.
- I was interested in getting cockatiels as pets & picked up this book to learn more about these birds before I bought them. I found this book to be VERY informative & gave me plenty of knowledge about these birds & led me to buy them. I keep refering back to this book almost daily since I picked up the birds a week ago.

5 comments about The Colored Atlas of Lovebirds: Agapornis : More Than a Hobby, a Passion!.
- I realy love this book, it was just what I was looking for. The only thing negative was the shipping! It was sent flat letter with no bubble wrap, all the corners were bent and indentations in the hard color. The book is great, but the condition I recieved it in was not good. The cover was 20 to 30 % damaged.
- Dr. Alessandro D'Angieri, a Brazilian physician with an interest in ornithology, is a researcher at the State University of Campinas's Zoology Department (UNICAMP) who has dedicated his life to the study and preservation of Brazilian and foreign birds. His deep interest in genetic diversity is reflected in this text devoted to the 262 species and 63 genera of the family Psittacidae and subfamily Psittacinae known as Agapornis.
Agapornis form nine distinct forms in the wilds of continental Africa and the coastal region of the island of Madagascar. Dr. D'Angieri includes a map showing the original homeland of these little birds, many of them threatened by the encroachment of humans, who range across an area just South of the Equator. The book also includes hundreds of beautiful photos indicating the identity of these confusing little creatures.
Apparently, the coloring of companion birds here in the States is the result of lots of cross-breeding around the world. I certainly cannot keep it all straight even after perusing Dr D'Angieri's book, let alone know whether a particular type is caused by hybridization, mutation or metabolic disorder. Color in the diet does not appear to affect the color of the birds, although a healthy diet will certainly improve their feather coloration. .
I raise Agapornis otherwise known as Lovebirds and include several Personata and Roseacollis types in my collection. Two of my Personata companions include a pair of Cobalt blue-black masked twins. According to the author, this coloration is not common. Using Dr. D'Angieri's book I have been able to identify the coloration of several other birds, but this is an incredibly complex book so the photographs are very important and if a picture of a particular type does not exist, I cannot identify it at all.
I enjoyed this obviously professional book immensely, even if it includes more material than I can hold in my head, and will use it as a reference. I don't know if I will ever use it to guide the mating of birds to obtain a specific coloration for which it seems designed.
- This book is becoming slightly dated as new mutations have arisen, and some pics show birds in other than their best plumage. These minor faults aside, the genetic explanations and practical knowledge available to the breederin this book are most useful. And many (if not all) of the pictures are terrific. Other volumes or info on the web are needed for detailed lovebird care, but this book is most useful re: mutations and their selection.
- The Colored Atlas of Lovebirds : Agapornis : More Than a Hobby, a Passion!
This shopping
- This book is a must for anyone who is interested in the SCIENCE of professional breeding, especially for unusual color (read: more expensive birds)... it is truly NOT for the casual bird fancier. If you're buying it to better understand, care for and enjoy your pet, you will be disappointed. (Note: This reviewer believes that the breeding of birds should be left to professionals. Breeding birds 'casually' or 'at-home' is not a good practice. Baby birds are more than a lot of work, and there are many things that can go wrong, causing anguish to both owners and birds.)

5 comments about Cockatoos: Acclimation, Care, Feeding, Sickness, and Breeding (A Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- This is a standard, well-done pet owner's guide for cockatoos, including scads of information on the increasingly-popular pet. I wish that the book took more of a stand against the capture of these beautiful animals from the wild, but sadly, it merely warns against the health threats of smuggled birds.
Once you're over the moral quandary of obtaining your bird in an ethical manner, the book provides all of the information you could hope for. It not only gives you the basics of feeding and housing, but also has sections on breeding your cockatoo, and on understanding your cockatoo's verbal and physical cues.
The drawings are well-done, and many of the color photographs are simply gorgeous.
If you're considering getting a cockatoo as a first-time owner, I urge you to read this book cover-to-cover before you commit to getting your bird, as they have long life spans and are quite high-maintenance in some ways, and you should know what you're getting yourself into. Also, please support a local breeder rather than paying for the taking of these beautiful animals from their natural habitat.
- This book is no longer usefull. The info. is quite out dated foe example the author tells you that cockatoos need ONLY a seed diet. This was so 20 years ago. Pellets have been proven to be the diet with seeds (if fed) should be 10% of the daily diet. He does say feed fresh veggies, fruits etc. Also you are told about importing birds. This is against the law & has been so for YEARS.Not very much info. most info is only a few lines.under usefull literature & addresses he gives you names & addresses of magazines that are no longer in business. Over all the book is not worth the ink to print it.
- I gave this book 5 stars because it was very susccinct and informative.
- This book was OKAY. It didn't really talk much about how big they can get etc. Also, half of the book talked only about bredding which IS NOT the reason I bought it. I wanted general information on just SINGLE cockatoos not pairs!
- Upon reading this book, I found it to be a little too short in the areas I'm interested in. I've been breeding birds and taking in neglected birds which is one of the reasons I purchased this book. It is okay for someone wanting general information.( The pictures are nice to look at, says my son.) This is not to be used as a "bible".

2 comments about Birds of a Feather: Tales of a Wild Bird Haven.
- To anyone who loves animals, but especially birds, this is a wonderful book. I've been trying to locate the author's other books since Amazon recommended this one. The reference function that Amazon provides has been very helpful; I've found several books I didn't know about through that. The humor and love shine with every chapter and you won't be sorry you bought it. Dee
- Black-and-white photographs illustrate Birds Of A Feather: Tales Of A Wild Bird Haven, which tells true-life stories of award-winning author Linda Johns' experiences rehabilitating wild birds. From raising a chick to its first feathers to taking in a badly injured mother duck and her children to learning how to write with a pigeon on one's arm, Birds Of A Feather gives an unabashed look at the ups, downs, special joys and sad tragedies of caring for feathered friends in need day in and day out. Heartwarming and highly recommended for bird lovers especially.

1 comments about Cockatoos: Getting Started.
- This book needs to be taken off the market. The information is so old and out dated. It mostly deals with imported Cockatoos. Cockatoos and other parrots have not been imported since 1996, so it is unlikly anyone will be dealing with such a bird. Also the act of clipping only one wing has been declared cruel.
I really felt ripped off when I started reading this book, because I knew from the start the information was too out dated to be of any good. This book does not deserve a rating of 1, it is a total zero.
