2 comments about Finches.

  1. Great for the beginner. Touches briefly on most every topic. Not as specific and up to date. Poor picture quality.

  2. Especially for beginners, I recommend The New Finch Handbook . It is just a more through treatment of finch care. However, this book does have good pictures and is a fun addition to the library.

5 comments about Parrots in the City: One Bird's Struggle for a Place on the Planet.

  1. P{arrots in the city was both informitive and a really wonderful read. I have always had an interest in Monk parrots and this has certainly been an amazing eye opener. A truely wonderful book for anyone who loves parrots and maybe for those who should learn a little tolarance for this noble little creatures struggle to survive.

  2. The book tells of the struggle of the Wild Quaker Parakeet to survive in the wild. Part of their problem is they build large colony nests on power grids. The electric company needs to take down the nests so lots of baby birds are lost. But thanks to some wonderful bird loving people like the Davey's and many Bird Clubs in Florida and Illinois and states that allow Quaker Parakeets, the baby birds are put in foster homes to be hand fed, because they cannot be turned loose in the wild again. The book "Parrots in the City" is an easy reading book and it only took me 5 hours to read. It reminded me of "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill" by Mark Bittner, because both stories are doing all they can to give wild parrots a chance to survive in the wild in the United States of America.

  3. I received my copy and I'm impressed.

I heard about this book in its very first stages. I know how much work went into it: the interviews, the research, the refining and editing, to make it the best book it could be.

Parrots in the City is a book that finally addresses the idea of wild Quakers as they are, not as they are rumored to be. In a well-researched, well-thought out, well-documented book that goes into the history of the extinct Carolina Parakeet along side the flourishing wild Quaker (Monk) parrot, the authors confront the situation with thoughtful insight.

It tells a compelling story that should help the plight of wild Quakers, and wild parrots in general, if people just take the time to read it and understand what it has to say.

Quaker lovers should read it. Those who think Quakers are a problem
in the wild should read it, too. Mattie Sue, Jon-Mark and JoAnn Davey can all be very proud of their efforts

  4. I am not a bird owner, and my naivety with the subject meant I didn't even know what questions to ask about parrots before I read this book.

I found Parrots in the City to be a well-researched book about Quaker parrots, and was a great insight in to parrots.

This book gives an excellent, concise account of the history of parrots around the world, how they were reintroduced to the USA, and lists some accounts for specific states, as well as state-by-state restrictions. Internet discussion groups and their URLs are mentioned, and can be helpful for someone interested in the subject to link up with active parrot enthusiasts.

Particularly interesting was the urban life of the birds, and how their nest can affect utility power grids. I learned there are alternatives to exterminating birds. There was a section that listed words and phrases commonly used by parrots such as Gimme for food, gotta go to work when humans are dressed up and leaving, etc.

I can recommend it because the book covers how we got to Parrots in the City and most importantly, how to co exist with them.

  5. I was thrilled when I first heard that Mattie Sue Athan, Jon-Mark Davey and Joann Davey were teaming up to write about wild Quakers. Jon-Mark and Joann are long time Quaker watchers and they run the Quakerville.com website. Mattie Sue Athan is a name more familiar to bird lovers, as she has written a series of wonderful books on parrot behavior and training. I could not wait for the book to be published.

I was not disappointed. The book contains a wealth of information - both scientific concepts and personal observations - that explain why Quaker Parrots will never descend in vast flocks to decimate American agriculture.

Some of the more interesting and persuasive sections are the sections explaining the concept of K-select species vs. R-select species and the information on how Quaker colonies fail. The larger ethical issue of how humans treat "inconvenient" wildlife is also examined. Should we exterminate animals that get in our way? What is the most dangerous invasive species? (The answer might surprise you.)

The book is essential reading for parrot lovers, bird lovers, power company workers, farmers and legislators (at local, state and federal levels).

4 comments about Zebra Finches: Everything About Housing, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, and Disease (A Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. I have purchased this book for my Business Fobex South Africa cc (Fish or Bird exports )and after reading and studing the whole book I had more then success with all the information I gained from all the wonderful topics. This book is a must for those who want to have a deeper knowledge of the Zebra Finch. e-mail fobex@iafrica.com " and remember that any Barron Books of the Pet Owners Manual is always a good buy "

  2. This book has given me all the information I needed to help in raising my finches. I enjoy it and refer to it everyday.

  3. In just a short 76 pages Hans-Jurgen Martin touches on all aspects of Zebra husbandry. The information goes somewhat beyond beginners' interest and includes an excellent introduction to genetics. The quality of photos in the book are excellent,I only wish these nice photos where dedicated to more photos of the various varieties of Zebras instead of nests and types of seed. I find it to be a valuable quick reference source and it sparks further interest in the care and breeding of Zebras. I would highly recommend it to anyone who keeps Zebra Finches. Kathy Dezern

  4. we purchased zebra finches without much knowledge on that breed, nor of any breed. we found this book to be very informational in regards to nesting, feeding, enviroment, breeding, etc... it is a book that you can always reference to. thank you to the author for writing this book for the advanced as well as the novice. a book you will truly enjoy.

3 comments about The Modern Falconer: Training, Hawking & Breeding.

  1. It should be noted that this book is geared toward the sport as practiced in Britain. If you are considering Falconry in North America, you should consider other books as the laws vary considerably. I wish this had been noted in the description, as I had to return this book.

  2. I have recently taken up falconry, and have found this guide to be an absolute godsend. I now know how to best feed my dear falcon, and even how to nurse him back to health when he is under the weather.
My falcon, Gustavo, is now regularly bringing me freshly killed rabbits.
Falconry is, of course, not for everyone. You need patience, some financial means, open space and a sense of tradition and decorum. For those of us who meet these criteria, it is a noble and rewarding hobby- nay, lifestyle.

  3. A comprehensive guide containing all you need to know about falconry - breeding, history, the laws, the schools, displays, equitment, and veterinary care. Walters takes you step-by-step through everything, and manages to keep the information interesting. A definate must read.

5 comments about The New Finch Handbook (New Pet Handbooks).

  1. Pay no attention to the bad review below, that is the viewpoint of someone prejdice to the carduelan finches which is basically for advanced finch hobbiests, breeders, and aviculturists. That review shows little interest in being helpful to new or prospective finch owners. Christa Koepff has written without a doubt, THE most helpful book on finch care for begginers. Easy to read, reference, and understand. I own and moderate FinchFriends, one of the best and most popular Finch groups on Yahoo! I very highly recommend this book to all my members.

  2. There is great info for beginners here, including info on the care and breeding of exotic finches. However, there is not too much specific info on specific breeds.

  3. This book should be re-named as "The Non-Singing Finches Handbook" because that is exactly what it is. It is a book for new Beginners, not for the advanced beginner, intermediate or expert breeder, because the content is superficial and out dated. Nothing is mentioned of singing birds such as the northern cardinal, rose breasted grosbeak, indigo bunting, siskins, goldfinches, linnets, etc. Instead you will find that the book has information on exotic finches such as firefinches, gouldians, gordon bleus, munias, grassfinches, javafinches, all those non singing birds that I do not keep and never will keep. Do not be misled by reviews that suggest this is a book for experts. It is far from the truth. I would not even buy this book if I am a new beginner, a much better deal is the Finches & softbilled birds by Henry bates and Robert Busenbark, and I also bought the Finches and Sparrows by Peter Clement (plse see my review on this book on Amazon).

  4. This is a very good book, expecially for beginners. Lots of good basic information on the care an breeding of finches. Good species descriptions. However, my copy had many blank pages, and I did not get to read about some species, such as the Zebra Finch.

  5. I love this book! I found this book to be extremely helpful. I reccomend this book to finch lovers everywhere!

5 comments about Conures: Everything About Purchase, Housing, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, and Diseases (A Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. This book is to helpful in your curiosity about the kinds of conures there are & how to house them but hardly any info. is given on how to understand they're personality or on their habits & how to explore them further.

  2. This book is a good source for those who are looking for information on basic care and breeding of conures. However, it gives little information on keeping Conures as pets. There are almost no training tips given.

  3. This is not of great value to the average companion bird owner. It is geared mainly to the individual interested in breeding and setting up a breeding avaiary. There is very scant info on personality and characteristics. As most info is for breeding purposes, all cage and care requirements are written for at least 2 birds. Almost all info is provided concerning wild caught, or nearly adult-parent reared offspring. As it is so easy to locate a good breeder that hand rears young, this is of little use. This book did not meet my needs, but would be useful to a perspective breeder of Sun Conures.

  4. This book is great for those who have just purchased their new conure. There are beautiful illustrations and many colored photos. But the book is mostly about breeding and it contained words that weren't really clear. It should have had more tips on training the bird. But other than those, i would say that it would be a good book to buy.

  5. I am a pet bird owner looking for info about behavior specfic to conures. I felt this book was primarily adressing those who want to get into breeding of birds. The photos were excellent. I have a green eyed conure, she is delightful and while green, the edges of her feathers are rimmed with a lighter green. She is beautiful and personable, contrary to the book's opinion of this type of conure.

2 comments about Step by Step Book About Training Your Parakeet (Step By Step).

  1. This is a cute little book about parakeets, including health care, training tips, supplies and breeding. It is fun to read but I was disappointed to see that most of the information found in this book can also be found in most budgie web sites. It will make a great present for a child with a budgie, but if you have Internet access, pass on.

  2. how to train them, breeding them with the proper nutrition while there breeding
