2 comments about Taming and Training Lovebirds.

  1. This book is titled taming and training lovebirds, yet only 6 of the 92 pages are dedicated to this topic! If I wanted a book on basic care, basic information or anything other than taming and training this may have been an informative book but since I have already read 15 other books (not exagerating) on those topics, this book was useless! Regardless of reading level this book does not provide what it promises and I highly do not recommend this book.

  2. The book had a lot of diferent chapters and beatiful pictures in it.It told what kind of fruit lovebirds can eat.It told about what kind of toys were dangerous to lovebirds and about nesting boxes. This is the best lovebird book I ever read.

2 comments about Taking Care of Your Parakeet (A Young Pet Owners Guide).

  1. This is a very good book! It gives you so much information on topics you never thought would happen! I am getting a parakeet, and this was the book for me. It gave loads of background information that is very helpful in getting a paprkeet! It has hints on getting the right cage, good food, excercise, and loads of other information that is very helpful. If you are thinking about getting a parakeet, this would definatly be the best book to use.

  2. This is a great book for a young person to read or have read to them before you all decide whether a parakeet is right for your famaily. This book very simply shows a child or an adult if a prakeet is right for them, it also tells one how to plan for your bird, what you will need(cage, food, toys, vitamins, etc)before you even bring your bird home, how to take care of it, how to tame it, how to breed. All of this information is explained with detail yet very easy to understand, my child and I read it together in less than a half hour, and now we know we have a lot more to think about and plan before we purchase our bird. I would recommend this book to anyone thinking of purchase a parakeet for a child or even an adult. It is really a must read!

5 comments about The Guide to Owning a Quaker Parrot (Guide to Owning).

  1. Have been pleased with the quality and content of information; good resource guide for new Quaker parrot owners.

  2. If you are researching the Quaker, as a previous bird owner, this may not be the book for you. However, if you are a first time bird owner, I would give it 5 stars. I would have preferred more specific species information. Thank you.

  3. i ordered this book and received it long before i even expected. the book is in like - new condition. i recommend this seller to anyone who wants quick service and you get exactly what they are advertising.

  4. Great pictures, makes you want to run right out and purchase your parrot! Very informative also. I enjoyed it.

  5. If you are oriented towards a quaker but don't know much about parrots yet, this book is the best to have a quick resume of everything is important to know. Takes little time to read it all but at the end your ideas will be a lot clearer, you'll know the essential to make your decision about getting a companion quaker or not; and in case you've decided to go for it, the essential to take care of your quaker and make it healthy and happy. In a second time you can deepen in your knowledge with more complex (but potentially confusing for a novice) books on the subject.
The text is quite objective about the level of attention and cares they require but... *beware*, the photos are so endearing that you are not much likely to resist the urge to get one of this cute and intelligent birds right away and start cuddling it...

2 comments about The Emu Farmer's Handbook: Volumue 2: Commercial Farming Methods for Emus, Ostriches and Rheas.

  1. This book contains a wide variety of topics on emus, but does not give enough useful detailed information. It is too generalized and seems afraid to mention actual brand names of feed and equipment. This is not a book for those looking for a step-by-step, detailed "how-to" reference guide.

  2. This is a thorough treatment on a hard-to-find subject. The book covers all aspects of raising emus, including: housing, health, breeding, incubation, raising chicks, and marketing emu products. The author, Maria Minnaar, has been raising emus commercially since the mid-1980s. This book is aimed at the commercial emu farmer, with detailed information on veterinary care, breeding, meat cuts and emu oil processing. The author provides one chapter on raising Ostrich and Rhea, highlighting the differences between these birds and emus. There is an interesting section covering other ratites, the Cassowary, Kiwi, Moa and Elephant Bird, and a good bibliography of ratite information sources. The drawings and photographs are high-quality.

3 comments about Budgerigars (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals).

  1. Budgerigars (typically called parakeets in the US) are amazing, intelligent, playful creatures. They can be so much more than pretty things in a cage. With patience, persistance and love they can learn to mimic human words (and sometimes use them in context), perform tricks and can become a delightful part of any household.

This book is geared specifically to the potential or new pet owner and advocates providing the best possible care for your budgie: a sizeable cage, a varied diet (including fresh produce, grains and legumes and plenty of fresh water) and exercise time outside of the cage.

I've read a few books on budgies over the years but this book is quite possibly my favorite on this species. I highly recommend it.

  2. I am building a parakeet library in preparation of buying a budgie for my 5 and 7 year olds. This book is visually appealing and easy to read. Nice, shiny pages with up-to-date, beautiful photographs with excellent information and details. Not just the usual chapter-by-chapter book. It has special pages with colored sections and various formating making this a fun book to read.

  3. As far as I am concerned, when it comes to books on pet birds, Barron's is the best. BUDGERIGARS by Immanuel Birmelin (translated by Matthew Vriends) falls into this category, although it is somewhat condensed compared with other books on the market. Birmelin covers all the important issues, such as caging, food, and other aspects of care.

My favorite section is about "playing" with your pet Budgie. Budgies are intelligent little parrots and you can have hours of fun if you choose to by providing them with sources of amusement. Birmelin lists `The 10 Most Popular Games' you can play with your Budgie and "How-To: Fun and Games." Did you know you could play card games with Budgies?

Although we never want to think about the possibility, sometimes your Budgie gets sick. Birmelin includes a section "If Your Bird Gets Sick" that gives you some ideas of what you can do besides get upset. In this section he includes a `Checklist - Preventing Illness' which is helpful especially if this is your first bird. Keeping his cage clean is a good thing to do, and spending time with him every day will keep him happy. A happy Budgie is a healthy Budgie.

4 comments about The Backyard Birdhouse Book.

  1. excellent for the backyard birder. It offers really useful ideas for attracting birds and keeping them coming to your yard.

  2. I was sent this then-new book seven or eight years ago to review for my newspaper column on birds, and found it to be an excellent guide, not only on how to build boxes for all sorts of cavity-nesting birds, but also how to deal with problems like predators and pests. I built one of the boxes; it went together well and has served quite a few feathered families over the past five or six years.

  3. I was interested in putting up some birdhouses (nestboxes) in my backyard and trying to attract some of the more exotic birds, etc... I checked out about a dozen books form the library.. Well, this one hands down was the best...

Book starts out by going over the birds you would want to attract to your nestboxes, with pictures and bios on all the birds, such as bluebirds, chickadees, titmouses, etc.... Then it goes into the nestboxes, pro and cons of certain nestboxes.. and tells you how to alter each nestbox to attract the birds at the beginning of the book (mainly you just drill a size hole)....
While watching birds in my backyard or building a nestbox, I have consulted this book over and over.. It's a great book, and I have no idea why the other reviewer gave it such a bad review..

  4. This book was terrible. I couldn't believe how bad it was. It was very out of date and made no sense. The directions are very hard to follow and it doesn't give nearly enough details. This didn't work for me at all. My birdhouses kept falling apart!!! I would highly suggest another book to replace this one, or better yet, you can have mine because I won't be using it!

5 comments about The Complete Guide to Raising Pet Birds for Profit: The Greatest Backyard Business Ever.

  1. Aside from the occasional typo or grammatical error, I found this to be the best of its type since Wendell Levi's Making Pigeons Pay. In some ways, in fact, this book is superior in scope to Levi's.

A great deal of the book is oriented to pet bird wholesaling. There also are well-written chapters for each of the top sellers - parakeets, cockatiels, finches and love birds. I found each of the bird breeding-specific chapters to be helpful, although further details should be included in a future edition.

I am hopeful the author, or another capable writer with experience, will soon issue a similar book for the more lucrative Parrots, Macaws, and so forth.

I further also hope somebody with experience will soon offer books for the other pet trade groupings - reptiles; marsupials, rodents, and so forth.

Hmmm...perhaps Breaking Free can do so and can then publish an Encyclopedia of Pets & Exotic Animals? Guess what...it is now in preparation and completion is scheduled on 1 September 2005. Interested parties should email LJ at ljsbreakingfree dot com.

We at LJ's Breaking Free intend to list this book for readers for it truly is one of those gems that people can use to find their freedom from corporate wage-slavery.

We also shall be seeking the publisher/author's permission for e-Book rights. In time, this book should be at the top of our best seller list - Bill Anderson, (LJ), Breaking Free.

  2. A very well written book that will hold your interest so much that you will find it hard to put down. Very thorough, with step by step instructions on breeding, feeding, housing, and marketing of parakeets, cockatiels, lovebirds and finches, either as a hobby or commercially. The most complete book of its kind.

  3. This book includes a lot of information that would take the average person years to learn. Not only does it cover breeding various species of birds, but it covers different ways of marketing them as well. It even covers shipping birds via the airlines, which opens up larger markets for most people. If you enjoy birds and are considering turning your hobby into a small business, this book is a must have.

  4. I was looking for a secondary income when I ran across this book. I found that the pet business is a huge business that I had never really thought about. I have always loved birds and animals and this book had the information that I needed to get started with a small business of my own. After reading the book through twice, I knew this was something that I would enjoy doing. I located a wholesale buyer in my area who agreed to buy my production. The book is well written, very interesting, and easy to understand. After reading the book you can clearly see that the author is an animal lover and is very much interested in the welfare of the birds, since he discourages anyone from entering this business solely for the financial rewards. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to breed the smaller types of pet birds, either for fun or as a small business.

  5. After leaving a 20 year career with the government, I was hoping to find something more creative. While looking for information on buying a pet bird for my daughter , I happened across not only a great book about birds but also a new career. Although I will be starting at the hobby level at first , with the straight forward advice and information in this book I really feel I can expand this to any level. This book reflects 25 years of some one elses hard work and experience. Not only did I find the information on raising birds fascinating but there is a wealth of knowledge for anyone looking to start their own business.
