3 comments about Bantams (Pet Owners Manuals).

  1. I wanted to learn more about Bantam Chickens as I was interested in keeping them as pets in my backyard. Although the writer gives quite a bit of information, the info given was very discouraging and I gave up the idea after reading the book. Months later I found a website that gave a more down-to-earth approach that inspired me to try keeping Bantams as pets. Also, as with many other books on animals, the writer seems to fall back on the many diseases a chicken could possibly contract as a way to fill pages. If you wrote a book about Humans, you could imagine how many pages could be devoted to disease, rather than more interesting aspects of Humans or their behavior. I'm sorry I bought this book.

  2. Frankly, I didn't think this book was worth the money. There is quite a bit of misinformation in the book, and since it was originally released in Europe, the pictures of the chickens in it are identified as they would be in Europe which is pretty meaningless to folks in America. Folks here who would be looking to purchase bantam chickens using the names in this book wouldn't be able to find them, and the book does not give the equivalent American name.

On the other hand, the photography is magnificent! If you just want a book with really nice pictures of bantam chickens, this one is really great. However, the rest of the book leaves a lot to be desired.

  3. I thought that this was a very good introduction to keeping chickens of all sizes, and is written in nice clear terms. The book is well-illustrated, and gives a 'lowdown' on many breeds of bantam, along with very helpful advice on housing and care of your flock. I particularly liked the way the author tries to give an insight on behaviour, and how chickens 'tick'. I'm very pleased I bought this book!

3 comments about Conures (Animal Planet Pet Care Library).

  1. This book has a lot of information about conures. I like the fact that its just about conures instead of all parrots as conures are alittle bit different in the way they act. My blue-crown is the second conure I've had. The first one, a white-eyed conure, lived for 24 years. I purchased this book so that I can keep up with illnesses, wing clipping, etc. I would recommend this book to anyone who has or wants a conure.

  2. Conures by Carol Frischmann gives a good basic start for the new pet conure owner. This book provides guidance to the individual who is selecting a conure as a pet as well as someone who has just brought home their first conure.

Conures is a visually appealing book that is graphically well-laid out and easy to read. Key information points are set up in table formats that are excellent for a quick reference. A lot of practical information is packed into this publicaton along with suggestions for how to learn more beyond the topics covered within its pages.

It provides a range of basic information for the new pet owner which includes diet, health care, grooming, toys, housing and training. I especially like the tips for how to help children care for and interact with the conure since so many times these birds are chosen as pets for families with children. By giving ideas of specific activities and interactions by age, parents can oversee a level of involvement with the bird that is appropriate for their children.

It is very difficult to have a book that covers all aspects of care for a pet parrot, but this book does cover the basics very nicely. If the new conure owner follows the direction provided, they will be headed the right direction for the enjoyment of owning a healthy, happy pet bird!

  3. Conures (Animal Planet Pet Care Library) is a great book. Full of good and helpful information. I sat and read it cover to cover. I am now going back and highlighting the information that really stood out. This book is great for overall information and detailed day-to-day care and interaction. I would recommend this book to anyone who owns or plans to purchase a conure for a pet/companion. Excellent resource.

5 comments about Parakeets (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. I had thought that I knew a lot about the care and feeding of parakeets, this book showed me much more.

  2. Some of the information is great, but it still left me with questions. So the title "A Complete Pet Owner's Manual" is misleading.
It does have good information on diet and health and exercise.
But it seems like an overview. But I was looking for more than an overview. The title should be "Parakeets, an overview for the new owner" More details please!

  3. I LOVE this BOOK! It is quite informative. I do wish to obtain additional books on parakeets.

I wish these books had been around when I was growing up! i LOVE these animals. Their so cretive and unique in their own little ways thought they really are n ot small at all!
    Thanak you.

  4. Authored by Annette Wolter, this manual on parakeets was published in 1999. There are 87 pages. Eight chapters are contained. Numerous color photos and black-and-white drawings are provided. Also, an index is included. The anecdotes the author supplies are informative. Examples of topics covered are tips on purchasing, bathing, care, toys, diet, health, breeding, cages, taming, teaching the parakeet how to talk, intelligence, and behavior. I find the chapter focusing on behavior to be instructive and fascinating. In addition, two tables are displayed; one deals with dangers to the parakeet, while the other deals with health problems. The color photos of the parakeets are pleasing. As for the black-and-white drawings, they are impressive and educational. I recommend this manual.

  5. Unfortunately, Barron's has a tendency to publish same-subject books in both this series and in their top-of-the-line "Handbook" series, and the topic of Parakeets is no exception. They have, in fact, printed two books on Parakeets in this series (one about Budgies, which are the same species) and a Parakeet Handbook (which is co-authored by both of the writers involved in this series' books).

Annette Wolter's style is one that is easy-to-read, but it is still quite informative. Had I not read "The Parakeet Handbook" first, I would have learned much from this book. However, as it is reasonably priced, well-written and informative, I can recommend it with few reservations.

2 comments about The Guide to Owning a Cockatoo.

  1. This has nothing more to offer on Cockatoos than any parrot book. If you find something useful, you probably should not own a cockatoo because it is very general and anyone involved with parrots should know this already.
    Nice pictures though.

  2. This is a concise and well written book on Cockatoos. It is well balanced in its opinions and advise. I recommend this to anyone thinking of adopting a cocatoo.

2 comments about Raising Game Birds: Storey Country Wisdom Bulletin A-93 (Garden Way Publishing's Country Wisdom Bulletins, Raising Animals Series, No a-93).

  1. The Storey guides are the best and informative publications I have bought. Having bought expensive books that said the same thing as the Raising Game Birds: Storey Country Wisdom Bulletin A-93 (Garden Way Publishing's Country Wisdom Bulletins, Raising Animals Series, No a-93)
by Mavis Harper does I highly recommend this publication first and foremost. The information is easy to read, illustrations etc easy to follow. Save money as well by putting the money you would have put toward an expensive book on the subject, toward other game bird needs.
Have poultry and was interested in raising some quail and pheasant and made the mistake of buying a couple expensive books on the subject that I quickly returned. Then someone suggested Raising Game Birds: Storey Country Wisdom Bulletin A-93 (Garden Way Publishing's Country Wisdom Bulletins, Raising Animals Series, No a-93)by Mavis Harper so I bought it and was/am so impressed with the information, advise etc shared. All the information one needs.

  2. Very thin pamphlet type book. Way too general in its information. Should be given away for free instead of having to pay for it..... Use the money you would have spent on buying this book/pamphlet and apply it to getting a good book on raising game birds.........

5 comments about The Beak Book: Understanding, Preventing, and Solving Aggression and Biting Behaviors in Companion Parrots.

  1. This is a great book that explores what part that we, as owners, play in the behavior of our parrot. I loved the illustrations, too. The parrot "expressions" were so accurate that they made me smile.

  2. This book has some excellent information and suggestions. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to better understand why parrots bite and how to prevent, reduce, and respond to biting. The down side is poor organization, too much repetition and bad visual design. It reads like random articles rather than a well-planned book, and some of the text is on colored patterned background making it almost unreadable. But even with that, the information is WELL worth the purchase price!

  3. Occasionally my parrot was biting me so I called a rescue organization who recommended this book to me. It is FANTASTIC! I haven't been bitten by my bird since. I learned to respect when my bird was uncomfortable with something and that handling a bird when they're extremely excited can be asking for trouble. I can't say enough good things about this book. BUY IT!

  4. If you have a parrot you must get this book. It should be standard issue with every pet parrot. Just skimming through the book is a revelation. I'm not finished reading it yet, and it's already made a difference in my relationship with my parrot.

  5. If you're looking for an instant formula to solve biting you won't find it here. You will find a lot more. There is plenty of practical advice, but much more thoughtful discussion and anecdote. Sally Blanchard's real gift - and her gift to us - is to teach us how to think about our birds, how to be a careful observer and how to build a mutually trusting relationship with the little creature's we're blessed with (even when we sometimes feel cursed).

One person complained about the organization, but on reflection I think the book's slightly meandering collage-like style is an asset. Instead of letting us flip to the page or paragraph with the quick fix, the book forces us to slow down, listen to, and think about our birds (it starts with a nice little essay on the beak itself) - which is really the first step in building a long-lasting healthy relationship with anyone or anything. I'm sure Sally Blanchard could have been a dynamite therapist, and we and our parrots are lucky she turned her empathic intellect to a relationship in dire need of it - the parrot-human relationship.

5 comments about A Parrot for Life: Raising and Training the Perfect Parrot Companion.

  1. I have read at least 5 books on parrot behavior getting ready for my African Grey to come home and this is by far the most informative. It is like going over details with a real person rather than cold and impersonal with dry facts only. I recommend for any new or experienced parrot person. Great illustrations also.

  2. I am owned by a male Eclectus parrot. This book is written for a bird hobbiest in terms that are easy to understand. I have gained more understanding of what makes my parrot tick.

  3. It's easy to place this book on any parront's list of must-haves. Well written, well laid out and full of the best information regarding keeping parrots as pets. If you want to set the parrot-person relationship up for success, this book gives you the tools to do it!

Chapters include: Choosing the Right Parrot, Setting Up Space, Nutrition, Adjusting to Your New Parrot and Vice Versa, Behavior and Training, as well as Caring for Your Parrot Over a Lifetime.

Another bonus to this book? It travels well! This is especially useful for behavior consultants, veterinarians and anyone else who assists people with their birds.

I've told my students that I've been waiting a long time for a book of this caliber, and this piece has delivered, plus some! It's not just for the newly bird smitten, it's for those who have lived or worked with parrots for many years as well. It is also a useful tool for animal shelter/humane society staff.

Definitely belongs on your gift giving list this holiday season for all your parrot loving friends, those who are interested in birds, and those who help the avian community. It's such a beautiful and useful tool, please consider donating a copy to your local animal shelter!

  4. This book should come with every parrot adopted. I bought the book not only for the advice and information, but because it's filled with fun, colorful illustrations. I love the ideas for making easy, inexpensive parrot toys in the chapter called "Bringing Home Baby." Good luck with your new buddy.

  5. I own most parrot books available and certainly all books available since year 2000. They are mostly good but very similar.....
A Parrot for Life is, not only a beautiful book to compliment your library, it is different in that it prepares you for events which more than likely will happen and for changes which are also bound to occur when you choose to share your life with one of these beautiful long lived creatures.
Not only is it a Godsend for those planning to bring a companion parrot into their life....
This book is special and unique and I feel it will help parrot owners going through that 'what have I done' stage, help them to get past that and fall in love all over again gaining a deeper relationship with the parrot they chose as their companion.
This book will help you to realise you don't have to be a failure and to make friends again with your companion.
Own this book and open your eyes.
    With respect..
    Jan

3 comments about Manual of Parrot Behavior.

  1. I am an avid reader of anything parrot and this book has useful information that explains parrot behavior as well as health issues.
Add this to your bird library..it is a great reference!

  2. Any veterinary library or holding specializing in pets - even at the public library level - will want to have Manual of Parrot Behavior in the collection: it's the first detailed reference of its kind to provide a survey by international experts on parrot behavior under one cover. Here are keys to both normal and abnormal parrot behavior, techniques on treating common problems, and checklists of tameness and other scores. Invaluable.

  3. Excellent! a must have for anyone. Lots of valuable information.Recomend for people with some knowledge of keeping parrots.
