- I read the book in Spanish, it easy for me since is my mother language. I found the book very bored and I thing the translation made was poor, very poor.
I won't recommend to read this book in Spanish.
- This book starts off well; it is well written, poignant, humorous, and insightful. Somewhere before the end of Italy though, Elizabeth Gilbert goes from all these lovely and positive traits to a person bent on proving that she deserves to have whatever the heck it is she wants. In fact, we should all do ourselves the favor of becoming self absorbed and selfish.
And that is the journey that Gilbert suffers us on. She deserves a break today and everyday and sets out to figure out, "What does Elizabeth want." Period.
And really how terrific is that, an advance for a book, this book, telling all of us how to achieve selfishness, like we need told, duh.
I really enjoyed the first third of the book, but Gilbert gets to be so full of herself, her wisdom, her desires that is just got b-o-r-i-n-g.

Me encanto!
- This is a rich and evocative memoir of the author's chaotic childhood. Growing up in rural Puerto Rico, while often living in primitive conditions, the author's lush and lyrical prose paints a vivid picture her early life. The flavor and rythms of her island home come alive under her expert hand, creating an unforgettable picture of her early childhood.
The author grew up in a poor family. During her childhood, she lived in Puerto Rico with her unmarried parents, who were always at war with each other, as her father was a somewhat irresponsible philanderer. It was her mother who centered the family and who always sought a better life for all of her children. When an irrevocable break occurred between her parents, her mother moved to New York during the nineteen sixties, eventually settling with her seven children in the mean streets of Williamsburg, Brooklyn in New York City.
The author details her life's journey from rural Puerto Rico to Brooklyn. The author was transplanted to Brooklyn at the age of thirteen, and her description of her life in Brooklyn is every bit as interesting as that of her life in Puerto Rico. Her oftentimes bewildering transition from her native, Spanish speaking Puerto Rico to an English speaking environment is engagingly chronicled. The author takes the reader on her journey through Brooklyn's public school system to the prestigious High School of Performing Arts, where she graduated and went on to attend Harvard University on a scholarship.
This coming of age memoir is so engagingly written that I was left with the desire of wanting to know more about the life of this remarkable woman. I was also very taken with her writing style. So, I went ahead and bought every book that this author has ever written and look forward to reading each and every one.
Puerto Rican or not you can read this book. It's excellent. A must read.

- I bought this book at a fair. There was a "Spanish Only" book stand and I started a conversation with the lady about how homesick I was and she said this is what I needed to read. I'm a younger generation, but I loved it because my Grandmother was not from the city so I read a lof of things that reminded me of her. But there were even some expressions and cultural aspects that have obviously remained the same. The book was extremely interesting and I cried and laughed (and I tend to read in public so I got a couple of weird looks). It really hits home and gives a very accurate view of life in "el campo" in Puerto Rico during the times of depression, but does it in a way that still allows you to notice the beauty of our culture, our people. I am reading the sequel right now and already ordered the last of the three. She's an amazing narrator. Enjoy!

- I am an intermediate level student of Spanish. This book keeps being mentioned and I would like to read it in Spanish. I can't find a copy where I can read a page or two to see if that might be possible. Does anyone familiar with this book have a recommendation?
- Although I've read this book before, this time, as an older and wiser reader I was able to recall a lot more information and specifics that had slipped my mind since the previous reading. As a non-native spanish speaker, it was easy to follow, in a dialect I could easily translate if necessary. Plus, this book is useful in the spanish classes that I teach in portraying a realistic view of guatemalan history.
- After reading this book, I realized how truly blessed I am. My problems are so minor compared to theirs. It also helps you to understand the suffering of the Indigenous persons both in Guatemala and in other countries throughout Latin America. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about the world around them.

- This is an important book that humanizes the immigration issues we are facing in the U.S. today. Families are being torn apart, risking everything trying to find a way out of desperate poverty. If we want to solve these problems, we need to invest in Latin America, create jobs and support production of goods in these countries. Nazario followed the the struggle of just one of thousands of children who comes to the US to find a parent. It's absolutely heartbreaking, but important to understanding the immigration situation. I went to hear the author speak--she is a dedicated, brave and passionate woman!
- I recommend Ms. Nazario's book both as a balanced analysis of the problems associated with illegal immigration to the U.S. and as a very approachable read for students of the Spanish language. I can't comment on the quality of the translation since I haven't read the English-language original. However, the Spanish is straight-forward, and the narrative is almost entirely in the present tense. I felt that the book helped expand my Spanish vocabulary, and I would think that it would make a relevant and very useful text for teachers of intermediate Spanish in the U.S.
Ms. Nazario attempts to humanize the illegal immigrants that we hear about every day in the news. She focuses on immigrants from Central America whose journey to the U.S. is often a harrowing one. She describes that journey in great detail. More interesting still (to me) was her account of the family problems and conflicts that arise when a mother leaves her children in search of better pay abroad. While the mother believes that the money she sends home will improve the lives of the children she left behind, the children themselves often feel abandoned, unloved, and resentful. I had expected that Ms. Nazario would exploit the emotions aroused in the reader -- our sympathy for the hardships experienced by these immigrants -- and argue that their suffering entitles them to residence in the U.S. (despite their illegal entry.) To my surprise, she concludes that illegal immigration serves neither their interests in all cases nor those of U.S. workers (particularly the unskilled) and U.S. taxpayers. A realistic analysis. She recommends that the U.S. do what it can to help improve economic conditions in the countries from which these immigrants come.
I've put my money where my mouth is and sent copies of this book to my mother and sisters, who all live in areas of the U.S. affected by illegal immigration.
- This true story is an eye opener to the reality of what imigrants face and risk to set foot in the US. Makes us (those who live legally and are born in US) appreciate the opportunities we have. The vivid accounts of the atrocities these poor people go through makes you wonder where the value of human life lies. I recommend you read it in english, as the translation to spanish was not that great.
- After reading this book I completely agree with the crowd. La travesia de Enrique is an interesting read especially if you are interested in knowing the details about what children and adults experience in their journey to the USA from Central America in hopes for a better life and future. The author is a journalist and experienced the journey first hand herself, a daring experience that she wanted to endure in order to make writing the book very accurate.
I personally had no knowledge of what these illegals experience in their journey and once they reach the USA more difficulty arises to find jobs due to their status and inability to speak English. I was also glad that Sonia Nazario focused on what happens to the children who are left behind by their parents and the vicious cycle that perpetuates among these families once they reach the USA and in their country of origin.
The book certainly enables me to think differently about the status and rights of illegals in the USA and border control issues.

- This is the 3rd book in a series about the true life of the author which starts after high school graduation. The first book started out with the author as a young boy. He and his family face incredible challenges in life's struggles through poverty, hunger, weather extremes, finding shelter, education, bullies, immigration, work ethics, and faith in God. After reading the first book, the students in my Spanish class all wanted to continue reading the next 2 books. Francisco Jimenez shares his family's stories about overcoming more than their share of negative situations. His life growing up was blessed because he had a mother who believed in him and encouraged him, but even with that positive influence, his life is a real miracle about overcoming odds stacked against him.
- I have read all three of the professor's books in their Spanish-language versions, and I have read each several times. As someone trying to learn Spanish, I find these books to be most useful. The vocabulary is practical, consisting of everyday words; the style and narrative are direct; the ideas and sentiments comprehensible and familiar. This book is a continuation of an autobiography that begins with the professor's previous book -- Senderos fronterizos. In that book, Professor Jiménez describes his family's illegal entry into the U.S. and the difficult years of poverty in California, where his family labored as agricultural workers. In Senderos, we watch the family struggle to make ends meet. We watch Francisco and his older brother Roberto struggle to put themselves through high school. It's the sort of immigrant story that every American can understand and enjoy. Francisco and his siblings adapt to their new environment (while the father does not), and Francisco wins admission to university. In this second volume of the story, Francisco leaves his family in Santa Maria and goes to college. The reader admires Francisco's love of family and determination to educate himself. I can't believe that he didn't kiss Laura before he put her on the train to San Carlos. Maybe he did and just won't tell us. I suspect that we might see a third installment to this story. If the professor writes it, I will certainly buy and read it.
At the moment, I am rereading Más allá, looking up all the words that I didn't know and let pass on the first reading. As a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, I derive an added pleasure from reading this book -- that of recognizing many of the places described in the story. A very pleasurable read. Highly recommended for intermediate learners.
All right, here it is on page 210: "Me estiré y le di un beso. OÃmos el silbido del tren." So Laura gets her kiss, after all. Now I'm happy.

Mi reconocimiento a IA y mi carino a "Paula"
Bertha DeWolf.
Gracias!!!
- I would recommend this book to everyone. It is an easy book to read and the story touches your heart.
- I have to admit that the book took me awhile to love, but then I became totally involved. About the last 100 pages held my attention more than anything. This is a remarkable journey, and one that will haunt me for years to come. Some of the historical references were interesting, but often times took away from the poignancy of the novel.

5 comments about Fidel y Raul, mis hermanos.
- Fascinating autobiography by Fidel"s sister. She has no use for him and feels he has betrayed the Cuban Revolution. She still seems to have a soft spot for brother Raul however.
- HE OIDO MUCHO ACERCA DEL TEMA DESDE QUE SE PUBLICO EL LIBRO . MUCHOS LA ATACAN POR DIVERSAS RAZONES. PERO VEO LA PARTE HUMANA DE ELLA . TODOS COMETEMOS ERRORES Y TENER UN APELLIDO DETERMINADO O NACER EN DETERMINADA FAMILIA NO ES POSIBLE ELEJIRLO. APLAUDO SU ESFUERZO Y DERECHO A DEFENDER SUS RAICES , ESPECIALMENTE SUS PADRES Y ABUELOS.QUIZAS FUE LEJOS AL TRAICIONAR LA FAMILIA COMO HE ESCUCHADO DE MUCHAS PERSONAS ESE COMENTARIO, (AL MENOS DESDE EL PRINCIPIO DEJO CLARO QUE NUNCA HARIA NADA QUE PUDIERA AFECTAR LA VIDA DE SUS HERMANOS Y ESO DICE DE LA CLASE DE MUJER QUE ES JUANITA,SE PARTIO EN DOS AL TOMAR ESA DECISION). PERO ESTABA EJERCIENDO EL DERECHO DE OPINAR Y ELEGIR . ROMPIO CON SU FAMILIA QUEDO AISLADA DE ELLOS Y ACA TAMBIEN LA RECHAZARON.
ESTE TEMA PARA LOS CUBANOS ES TERRENO RESBALADIZO PORQUE ENCIENDE MUCHAS PASIONES PERO AQUI HAN VENIDO DE CUBA MUCHOS QUE REALMENTE TIENEN MALAS HISTORIAS EN CUBA Y LOS HAN RECIBIDO CON LAS MANOS ABIERTAS.
ELLA HA SUFRIDO LO MISMO QUE LOS DEMAS CUBANOS QUE ESTAMOS ACA Y MAS AUN . PUDO ELEGIR Y QUEDARSE ALLA Y DISFRUTAR LOS BENEFICIOS QUE TIENEN LOS FAMILIARES DE CUALQUIER FAMILIA PRESIDENCIAL Y NO LO HIZO POR LO CUAL HA PAGADO UN PRECIO MUY ALTO AL SER CONDENADA AL OSTRACISMO POR SU PROPIA FAMILIA.
EN MI OPINION ES UN DOCUMENTO HISTORICO ,ESTO LO DIGO SIN PARCIALIDAD POLITICA.
NO SOY POLITICO PERO TODO LO QUE HABLA DE CUBA ME INTERESA ,Y LO QUE VEO ES LA VISION HISTORICA DE HECHOS QUE HAN MARCADO MI PATRIA Y EL MUNDO CONTADAS DE PRIMERA MANO Y CON UNA SINCERIDAD EXTRAORDINARIA.
EL TRABAJO PERIODISTICO DE MARIA TERESA COLLINS FUE ENCOMIABLE ,ES EL PRIMER LIBRO QUE LEO DE ELLA Y ME RESULTO MUY AMENO. CUANDO COMENCE A LEERLO NO LO PUDE DEJAR A UN LADO. LO RECOMIENDO A CUBANOS Y A LOS QUE NO LO SON.
CONTROVERSIAL POLITICAMENTE HABLANDO,INTERESANTE,HISTORICO ,BIOGRAFICO,CON MATICES REALMENTE DRAMATICOS , ES UN LIBRO QUE SE DISFRUTA DE PRINCIPIO A FIN
- I purchased this book for my husband so he could read about the Secret History behind the Castro Brothers that are running the Cuban Government. He told me a lot about the book, so I ending up reading the book also and thought that it was Great !!!
