1. Pensaba que iba a leer y aprender algo de cómo era la vida de los Castros por la perspectiva de Juanita pero en vez de eso leí una defensa contra los que han escrito contra los Castros .....libros que jamás conocía. ¡Ya estoy muy interesada de leer estos libros para saber que han escrito!
   A Juanita no le hacia falta defender su familia. Solo tenía que escribir su historia según su perspectiva sin mencionar lo que se han dicho otros y deja que el lector decide para si mismo cuál era la verdad. Era muy difícil seguir el libro con tantas interrupciones de defensas.

4. I purchased this book for my husband so he could read about the Secret History behind the Castro Brothers that are running the Cuban Government. He told me a lot about the book, so I ending up reading the book also and thought that it was Great !!!



5. Muy bueno, no porque así lo sea en atención a su evaluación literaria, sino porque nos muestra una realidad cubana que desconocemos: de primera mano.Una lectura sencilla y clara que de nos deja a la figura de Fidel en su
   verdadera dimensión. Cuba como lo que es : una dictadura.
   No debemos dejar de leerlo. Sobre todo quienes vivimos en America Latina y hemos visto como los jóvenes llevan en sus camistas la imagen del "Che" y hablan de Cuba y su revolución como lo mejor que ha ocurrido en America Latina.
   Juanita deja al descubierto la peor de las dictaduras donde amigos y enemigos de Fidel murieron arbitrarimente fusilados por el sólo hecho de la descición del Regimen. Sus más estrechos colaborados sin los cuales esta proeza no hubiera sido posible fueron luego "pateados" a un lado, caídos en desgracia, cuando Fidel resuelve declararse "marxista-leninista", perpetuarse en el poder, y no cumplir con su promesa de una cuba democrática. Qué suerte corrió ésta gente? Los que tuvieron más suerte pudieron exiliarse y los otros fueron vilmente encarcelados o fusilados. Podemos estar seguros que muchos dirán que Juanita fue paga para decir lo aquí describe, pero quien ha pago a los miles de cubanos en el exilio y a los que huyen a diario de un régimes que se dice democrático.

La verdad que Emilio sí pudo haber luchado mucho y haberse esforzado suficiente persiguiendo sus sueños,pero también eran tiempos donde habia menos tecnologias y menos competitividad,aunque en efecto existieran ambas,pero en estos tiempos ahora hay que reforzar tus metas y encontrar tu oportunidad.. en el momento adecuado..!! Bien por Emilio..pero su historia deja de ser contemporánea bastante por su modo de lograr sus anhelos.Ahora es completamente diferente.No basta con tener un sueño,sino de estar con la oportunidad en el momento adecuado y dar con algún ángel que te apoye y guie y tenga tantos deseos y sostén $$$$ para ayudarte a lograr los tuyos...!!

2. Acabo de leer el libro y es muy motivador e inspirador. Como tambien soy un inmigrante cubano me puedo identificar con Emilio y me sorprendi al leer sobre todos los obstculos que el tuvo que sobrepasar para llegar a donde esta hoy en dia. Su historia es verdaderamente una del exito americano. Si el pudo tener exito cualquiera tambien lo puede tener despues de leer este libro. Felicidades Emilio!

1. Compre este libro en el aeropuerto, saliendo de Puerto Rico, en un vuelo que me traería hasta Australia. Desde el momento en que comencé a leerlo, no pude soltarlo. Me encanto! No solo es una buena descripción de la cultura puertorriqueña de antaño, sino que también es una historia que se ve reflejada en muchos de nuestros países de Latinoamérica, a través de muchos de nosotros que hemos salido de ellos. Me identifique con Esmeralda Santiago, por experiencia propia y por historias que mis abuelas y mi madre me han contado de sus vidas.
   
   Este libro se lo he prestado a amistades latinoamericanas en Australia, y a cada persona le ha encantado, impactando a todos de manera diferente. Lo recomiendo a todo el que aprecie la buena lectura.

So, I went ahead and bought every book that this author has ever written and look forward to reading each and every one.



3. En este excelente libro Esmeralda Santiago nos introduce a sus recuerdos de la infancia en Puerto Rico como se desarrolla hasta su adultes. Utilizando su especial manera de escribir Santiago relata la dura vida que sufrieron miles de puertoriquenos a mediados de siglo, y los eventuales cambios y transformaciones sociales que le precedieron a este periodo. Cualquiera que lea este libro podra imaginarse a Negui y su familia en sus que haceres y ocurrencias. Puerto Rican or not you can read this book. It's excellent. A must read.

5. I bought this book at a fair. There was a "Spanish Only" book stand and I started a conversation with the lady about how homesick I was and she said this is what I needed to read. I'm a younger generation, but I loved it because my Grandmother was not from the city so I read a lof of things that reminded me of her. But there were even some expressions and cultural aspects that have obviously remained the same. The book was extremely interesting and I cried and laughed (and I tend to read in public so I got a couple of weird looks). It really hits home and gives a very accurate view of life in "el campo" in Puerto Rico during the times of depression, but does it in a way that still allows you to notice the beauty of our culture, our people. I am reading the sequel right now and already ordered the last of the three. She's an amazing narrator. Enjoy!

1. I bought this book when my mother-in-law died and everybody was passing throught a hard time. My husband just loved the book and gave him more peace and comfort through this hard time.

3. It is very refreshing to read Don's description of Heaven in today's language. After and accident he was 90 minutes in Heaven before he came back to life. I storngly recommend this book
   
   Leer la descripcion que este pastor hace de los 90 minutos que paso en el cielo despues de un accidente de auto, es muy refrescante. Al usar el lenguaje de estos dias lo hace mucho mas real, mas facil de imaginar. Lo recomiendo de todo corazon para todos pero especialmente para los que estan pasando por una enfermedad grave y sus familiares o para los que perdieron a un ser querido.

1. I like this book so much that I'm going to facilitate a 3-session seminar at Newburyport (MA) Adult Ed on it! I've read it in English and am now reading it in Spanish to make sure I don't miss any nuances - although her translator is EXCELLENT. It is intensely personal and poignant and Mrs. Allende's style is unique. Life keeps showing up - for all of us!



2. In the first pages she said that her agent in Barcelona just asked her to write "something". And she replied she couldn't, that she was not inspired. Her agent just told her, "write your memoires", easy to write, easy to sell. I think her agent was right, this book is easy to sell because it's coming from Isabel Allende, but it's poorly written, and the story is truly inconsequential.
   
   This book is nothing to do with other excellent novels by the author, like "La isla bajo el mar", o "Inés del alma mía". It is sad (and incredible) to see the author of "The House of Spirits--La casa de los espíritus" and "Paula" perform so poorly. She has lost all her ability to narrate and her prose has lost any magical realism it ever had.
   
   One last advice to Isabel Allende herself: Just keep your un-structured family, your un-structured husband, your un-structured friends and your everything-is-relative kind of life for you. It's sad to read the way you and your "tribe" live. Keep writing historical novels, you do that quite well.



3. In La suma de Los Días (The sum of Days) - Hardcover, Isabel Allende admits: "I had called my muse without results. Even the most horrendous muse had abandoned me." (p. 143). Later she tells us that she: remembered her career as a newspaperwoman: if she receives a subject and enough time to do research, she can write just about anything." (Page 144).
   
   This is the birth of "La suma de los Días," where Ms. Allende narrates her recent history, particularly the one that deals with her family in California, full of people and literary friends. Unfortunately for the reader, this is a terrible discourse of an author singing her praises, even insulting other writers--when her husband Willie decides to write a novel her comment is: "Anyone could say that writing a novel is like plating geraniums. I spend ten hours a day stuck on my chair trying to find the right phrase to be able to tell a more effective story. I suffer with my plot, I get involved with the characters, I do research, edit over and over and then I have to travel half the world promoting my books like a frustrated salesperson." (P. 281).
   
   Supposedly a sequel to Paula, Her technique is terrible, she changes from the second person to the third at will, confusing the reader. We don't know whhen she's talking to Paula or narrating her story. She also goes back and forth in time and several times she starts a story and tells you she'll finish it later.
   
   It is sad to see the author of "The House of Spirits--La casa de los espíritus" and "Paula" perform so poorly. She has lost all her ability to narrate and her prose has lost any magical realism it ever had.



4. En la Suma de los Dias, Isabel Allende cuenta su historia y la de su familia. Uno se identifica con ella y yo me senti muy cercana a ella. Del principio al final queremos saber lo que pasa en las vidas de cada uno de los personajes y como sale todo al final. Senti que estaba leyendo una carta de una amiga cercana!!



5. I had read all the books written by Isabel Allende is my favorite author. This book is wonderful. You will wonder be part of her "tribu" !

1. This book starts off well; it is well written, poignant, humorous, and insightful. Somewhere before the end of Italy though, Elizabeth Gilbert goes from all these lovely and positive traits to a person bent on proving that she deserves to have whatever the heck it is she wants. In fact, we should all do ourselves the favor of becoming self absorbed and selfish.
   
   And that is the journey that Gilbert suffers us on. She deserves a break today and everyday and sets out to figure out, "What does Elizabeth want." Period.
   
   And really how terrific is that, an advance for a book, this book, telling all of us how to achieve selfishness, like we need told, duh.
   
   I really enjoyed the first third of the book, but Gilbert gets to be so full of herself, her wisdom, her desires that is just got b-o-r-i-n-g.



2. Este libro vale la pena leerse por muchas razones, pero creo que la principal es contactarse con la propia necesidad de conectarse con lo divino y lo espiritual. Liz nos enseña a tomarle gusto a la vida, aún con todas sus vicisitudes. Me pude indentificar con algunas de la emociones y situaciones que describía, y me pareció muy valiente la manera en que las afrontó. Viajando por el mundo y sumergiéndose en otras culturas logra encontrarse a si misma, encontrarse con Dios, encuentra la paz, el equilibrio y el amor.
   
   El secreto está en confirar en la vida. Ésta siempre nos proveera lo que necesitamos. A veces nos quita cosas y lo creemos injusto, pero lo mismo nos está haciendo un favor. Pero eso no lo entendemos sino hasta que ha pasado el tiempo. Y la vida siempre nos colocará dónde nos corresponde estar, y he aquí la eterna intervención de lo divino. Me parece un libro hermoso y muy bien escrito. Sobre todo es ameno e inspirador.

   Este libro es muy buena para las mujeres de nuestra generación. Generalmente, las mujeres de nuestra generación estamos desilusionadas con toda la organización religiosa pero no hay nada para llenar este vacío. Elizabeth Gilbert describe todo ésto con su propia historia y por eso ella viaja para buscar algo más en referencia a todo ésto. Ella aprende a disfrutar de la vida en Italia y despierta su parte espiritual en India y descubre cómo amar en Bali.
   Pienso, que este libro te hará reir, llorar y te llenará de inspiración.



4. Este libro me hizo reír y llorar, también me inspiró. Ya veo en nuestra sociedad, faltamos la espiritualidad. Creo que nuestra generación está desilusionado con la religión típica, pero no hay nada para llenar este vacío. Elizabeth Gilbert es una típica mujer de nuestra generación. Tiene éxito en su profesión, pero tiene hambre para algo más. En sus viajes, despierta su parte espiritual y empieza tener una vida más rica. Creo que este libro hablará a muchas mujeres y vale la pena.

1. Compre este libro porque habia escuchado que era bueno. Pero me lleve una gran decepcion. A pesar de que su hija esta muriendo, ella cuenta muchas historias de su familia y hace unas descripciones que realmente no tienen nada que ver con lo que le esta pasando a su hija.



2. Fabuloso libro de Isabel Allende, escrito con talento unico, sin hacer menos a su generosidad de compartir con nosotros sus lectores su autobiografia, donde nos describe hasta los mas intimos rincones de sus memorias, tales como su experiencia a sus escasos 8 anos, cuando escapo a madrid a reunirse con "el amante" como ella le llama, su honestidad su palpa en cada palabra. Paula fue un gran placer conocerte al igual que a tu mama y a toda su tribu!! Dios las bendice! Gracias!!!



3. I would recommend this book to everyone. It is an easy book to read and the story touches your heart.



4. I have to admit that the book took me awhile to love, but then I became totally involved. About the last 100 pages held my attention more than anything. This is a remarkable journey, and one that will haunt me for years to come. Some of the historical references were interesting, but often times took away from the poignancy of the novel.



5. Reading "PAULA" was a magnificent experience. I have read all of Allende's books, but none quiet as touching. It took me from tears to laughter with the turn of a page. Allende is definately one of the greatest along with Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Laura Esquibel and Angeles Mastreta.
