2 comments about Lightship Baskets of Nantucket.
- I bought this book after taking classes in making lightship baskets locally, and must admit that without it I would not have been able to continue making them at home. The history of the baskets is excellent, and colored photographs of baskets as well as the island of Nantucket are numerous throughout the book. If you are at all interested in baskets, this book is a must!
- I took a class by Martha Two yrs. ago that was great to. It was at the MBA in Grand Rapids MI. The book is just as good if not better. The history is something I always wanted to know about . Thank You Martha for such a wonderful book . C. M. Miller Bay City MI.

3 comments about Indian Baskets (Schiffer Book for Collectors).
- This book is done very well. Many large color photographys, detailed illustrations of weave types. Would have liked to have seen more color photographys though. Overall a good guality book on baskets.
- Completely indispensable text for the weaver, curator, researcher, student, collector or just plain curious. Not a theoretical text; rather, the intent is to enable the reader to identify any basketry work produced by Native North Americans from the Arctic to the Southeast.
This book has scores of photos, including a preliminary section where baskets from each geographical region are reproduced in good color photos. Good but simple overview of the history of Native basketry, *great* overview of techniques with schematic drawings. Also has a thorough bibliography. A must-have reference book for any Native American or art-focused library.
- I first learned of this book from a basket trader in Tucson who was explaining why I could never find any Pima baskets that matched a photograph in a booklet I had. He suspected the photographer used a brown filter to enhance the appearance. He pulled out a copy of "Indian Baskets" to show me the difference and told me if I was serious about baskets I needed to get this book. In it, I found along with beautiful photographs large enough to see in detail of many tribes' baskets: an encyclopedia of information including a list of tribes that still made baskets with descriptions of the designs each uses, detailed drawings and descriptions of the many different stitches used in baskets, a chart that can be used to find which tribes make baskets with your favorite stitches, and even a list of prices for baskets sold a few years ago. It was the book I longed to find on this topic. The one obvious omission was a list of sites where tribes sell baskets today, but fortunately that information is readily available from other sources.

1 comments about Baskets and Basket Makers in Southern Appalachia.
- This is the most inspiring book I have found about making baskets. John Rice Irwin covers the subject of producing hand made baskets from scratch with a minimum of tools, and materials found in nature. The author features a great variety of black and white pictures of high quality baskets and makers at work. The book is as much a historical perspective of the Southern Appalachian basket culture, as it is a guide for making your own baskets. The remote areas of the region and the abundance of white oak and other native plants dictate the evolution of making baskets. There are references that indicate the initial designs were adopted by the Cherokee people of the region for harvesting, storing, and marketing their crops. The author has taken great care to include many details about the basket makers, their methods, and reasons for weaving. I was most inspired by the personal stories behind each basket, and the fact that many of the baskets outlive their makers. It is not uncommon for a single basket to last through several generations, carrying the love and thoughtfulness of the maker to those that follow. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in hand made baskets, as well as those who are looking for ways to use materials found in the back yard to create a lasting, usefull, even market worthy product. I have adopted many of the methods, meterials, and designes in the baskets I now make.

3 comments about Blooms and Baskets Gems of Summer: Gems of Summer.
- This is a fantasic applique book of baskets and forals for the advanced appliquer. Can't wait to see it come to life in fabric. Clear patterns with detaild directions. Not a book for beginners.
- This is a beautiful book with several patterns for detailed applique. The instructions are straight-forward and easy to understand. Several setting ideas are included. The flowers are beautifully detailed. This is the book I've been looking for! If you want to make a stunning quilt this is the book to buy.
- Try Emily's method for echo applique. Use this technique when you want to highlight a shape or pattern piece. You can stitch the narrowest little border using this technique. Great job, Emily.

3 comments about Handmade Baskets: 28 Beautiful Baskets to Make for Your Home.
- This book is a great basket book - good, clear instructions. In general, I would recommend Lyn Siler's "The Basket Book" as a better beginner's basket book. The projects in "Handmade Baskets" are a bit more advanced and unusual which for a non-beginner makes this a great addition to "The Basket Book".
- I bought this book when I was beginning to make baskets. This book is a must for the beginner and the advanced basket maker. It has several diagrams for each of the basket and has at least one color picture for each basket. Ms. Siler even has several photographs of variations of the baskets. I really enjoy this book and feel that it is a wonderful resource for all basket weavers.
- This book provides plans and directions for 28 baskets in a variety of styles: New England, Southwest, Victorian, etc. The directions are clear and concise with an added section for potential problem areas such as rimming and lashing the basket. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for projects and plans

2 comments about Glass & Ceramic Baskets Identification and Value Guide: Identification and Value Guide.
- I purchased this book to help me identify an unmarked glass basket that I purchased at a flea market. Not only did I find the basket, but the book gave me background information as well as an old advertisement of the line. The book has many photographs and provides prices for each featured item. I highly recommend the book for research and identification purposes. It is well done.
- Lots of individual color pictures , but no illustration for marks, no history of manufacturer, no index, poor organization.

1 comments about Remember Your Relations: Elsie Allen Baskets, Family, And Friends.
- This book should be on every Native American history devotee and basket lover's shelves. As a former Mendocino County and Bay Area resident, I applaud the beautiful photographs and easy reading style in Remember Your Relations. To better understand the legacy of Pomo basketmakers, take a trip to Mendocino, Sonoma, and Lake Counties. Stroll down back country lanes. Gaze at the scenery and landscapes. If you don't fall in love with this area, something's wrong. Thanks Dot, Suzanne, and Susan Billy for making this incredible history available to those of us who adore the basketmakers. Long live their stories! We do not forget.
