2 comments about Divided Loyalties: The Diary of a Basketball Father.
- This book is a treasure for anyone who has a link to college basketball in new jersey. I personally know at least 5 people mentioned in the book. The day by day account of mr. hurley's life as a coach and father is great, but some of the 'harsher' realities of grooming inner city young men to be successful basketball players are missing.
- Bob Hurley gives an amazing account of what it's like to be a basketball father. He follows the career of his two sons, Bobby, at Duke, and Danny, a guard for Seton Hall. While having two sons to follow in college basketball, Coach Hurley finds time to lead his St. Anthony's team to a state championship. This book speaks volumes about what type of man Bob Hurley Sr. is.

5 comments about Buck O'Neil and I.
- I was sorely disappointed. It was very poorly written to the point that as I read, I began to wonder if Ms. Hurtt had an editor. I expected more on how one deals with a May - December relationship; but instead what I got was a clothesline full of her dirty laundry.
It is pretty evident that Ms. Hurtt orchestrated/plotted/schemed to take advantage of a financially secure old man who had just loss his wife after a long illness. And when things did not go as Ms. Hurtt had planned (get pregnant; he will marry me; then I will have his child and secure an inheritance for myself) she chose to air her dirty laundry in public with the hopes, I believe, of making money by attempting to muddy Mr. O'Neil's good name. If indeed Ms. Hurtt was 4 1/2 months pregnant when O'Neil was given the Fatherhood Award June 17, 1999 as she writes in the text, it certainly did not take her long after Mrs. O'Neil's death on November 2, 1997 to jump Mr. O'Neil "bones." I even wonder if her ploy was not begun long before Mrs. O'Neil's death. I came away with the distinct impression that this girl had nothing but "ill intentions" to begin with - all related to money. I am disappointed. Shame on her. I rate her text (it does not quality as a book) at Zero Stars.
- Why is Buck O'Neil bucking the truth. This only makes him look very foolish. Why would he give this young ladies book his blessings and turn around and say to the public that some of the things in the book a not true? he would be better off saying to the public/press he has no comment! rather than trying to make her look like a liar. It's almost as though he apprently still can not own up to the truth!! are he is trying to hide something? this young lady wrote her story and continued to have respect for Buck O'Neil by even allowing him to read her manuscript after all he subjected her two, before it was published. I beleave her story, and wish her much success and for her to remember that the TRUTH always prevails. She wrote the book to bring closure of him and all she went through in their time together and he does not even have the decency to give closure to her. Buck O'Neil really needs to come out of denial. his presnt behavoir really holds a familiar similarity upon which she had already described in her book of him (DOUBLE MINDED).
- I salute her. An dependent woman with her own, who cared for another twice her age. She faced much adversity simply because this man was a well know Icon in the history of black sports. I think there is a message that she was trying to deliver. You can love and live without being a "gold digger". Her first book, not bad. I am a black woman, "I feel her" My salute to the lady. I am loking forward to reading her next book.
- Denise, I happen to be a writer and I read your book, and I thought it was special. I was in a relationship much like yours, so I can identify with some of the issues you had to deal with. People are much like computer viruses, a piece of computer language written in the same language as all the other codes but with harmful intent. Once the code is introduced it gets everything all mixed up and the computer stops producing good results. When situations seem so personal, even if others insult you directly, It has nothing to do with you. People are going to have their own opinion according to their belief system, so nothing they think or say is really about you, but it is about themselves. Their opinion is nothing but a point of view. As children we gossip and intentionally spread rumours to make a person feel bad and we did it quite thoughtlessly, but as grown-ups we become much more calculated in our efforts to bring other people down. Never mind your first review, only the truth will set you free. Good luck on your future material, I will be looking for it. I am leaving you with my e-mail so you can read my novel.
- If the reader had read the review without a jaundice eye they would have read in black and white where Mr. O'neil sat with the writer and read the book in its entirety, and gave the writer his blessings and said, it was written just as it happened. The reader obviously has a lot of personal problems and has had some kiss and tell stories of their own and they just dont have the intellegence to put it in writing. It also read like a person who may have possibly had something to do with the demise of Ms. Hurtt and Mr. O'neil's relationship. I hardly think Mr O'neil would agree with the readers opinion. If Mr. O'neil, had'nt cared for this young lady I dont beleive he would have had such a love filled relationship with her. For the reader to say that Ms. Hurtt was fulfilling her so called "trashy and stupid fantasies", truly appears to me that the reader had nothing better to write. Seems to me that the relationship was mutual. Im sure if Mr. O'neil felt this book was trashy he would not have given it his blessings. I think it was well written and It clearly lets us see that even upright, well loved people, (even our President) live very normal and human lives. To me there is no discredit to Mr. O'neil or to this young lady. I'm sure Mr. O'neil was proud to have had been graced by this beautiful, and very attractive young lady, who probably added, some much needed spice to Mr. O'neil's life. This was the anonymous readers opinion and everybody has one. To the Arthur of this book keep putting your mind to positive use, and ignore people and their meddeling ways. I personally think this reader should tend to their (DONT KISS AND TELL) business. I gave this book a 5 star cause it was well written for a first time writer.

5 comments about The Tao of Yao: Insights from Basketball's Brightest Big Man.
- The author wrote this book by compiling quotes from lots of others. In Hokkian, there is a saying, "Kong2 Ye3 Sou1", which can be roughly translated into "preaching high principals". I can't stand the writing, and I believe it would put anyone to sleep. Good luck!
- I'm a big basketball fan and a friend recommended this book to me. I really found it very interesting, informative, and yes, insightful. As opposed to a standard rehashing of a celebrity?s biography, or predictable blow by blow travelogue, this book takes a more dynamic approach to looking at why Yao has become such an international phenomenon. By seamlessly blending current events with basketball history, Chin explains what this athlete symbolizes, how he represents so many diverse fans, and why this all matters in today?s global village. Now I can see how some people might not get the subtler messages - the relevance of the 2,000 year tradition of Chinese philosophy with modern life isn?t headline news in the US. But the author does a worthy job of making these links, and supporting the larger case that Westerners have to be more aware of Eastern perspectives (just as Asia has followed America), since this "alternative" awareness actually can help us lead more well-rounded lives. And in our crazy world, I think that is a lesson well worth reading.
- If you are expecting to read "The Tao of Yao" because you are a Yao Ming fan, you will come away with some good & funny info about this gentle giant. But, this book is so much more as you progress from chapter to chapter! I often wondered why my hair would rise whenever I watched Yao play basketball on TV, but, I just thought it was because I was watching a very good "tall" basketball player with some skills.
Chin does a marvelous job of blueprinting how Yao's impact on the NBA scene is more profound than many thought possible.
- I (and probably everyone else who got this) bought this book simply because I thought it was a biography on the life of basketball player Yao Ming. Turns out that I was wrong. I found nothing on how Yao Ming grew up or how he decided he wanted to play basketball (and if these topics were in the book, they were probably only briefly mentioned).
The main topic in this book is the history of China, along with a few past quotes from Yao thrown in every once in awhile. I find it ridiculous how they need to make a book that was supposed to be about Yao into nothing but a history lesson for us. That's like if I were to go to some foreign country, become a famous basketball player, have a book written about me, and have it include nothing but American history. People buy books to learn about the person, not the country he's from. The many quotes included was another bad decision which shouldn't have been in the book. Yao pretty much says almost the exact same thing in each one of his quotes (something along the lines of "I'm so honored to be playing in America and am really enjoying my time here".) I'd say there's about 60 quotes in "The Tao of Yao", so this can get boring pretty fast. Simply put, there's very few redeeming factors in this book and Yao Ming fans will most likely be disappointed.
- I had this sent to me as a gift as it is not a book that I would ever pay full price for. It was a fine book that talks about Yao's notable first season.
there are some great chapters on other players and the tie-in to Chinese literature and Taoism is clever, at times. However, I found it repetitive that almost every chapter went on and on about how great Yao will be. I have no doubt that this is true, but do we have to hear that from every player, legend, or sports caster that the book interviewed? Overall, it was interesting but I would have liked to hear more about his youth, childhood and upbringing rather than chapter after chapter of his "potential."

5 comments about One Last Shot: The Story of Michael Jordan's Comeback.
- This book One Last Shot was a good book.It wasn't the best book writen about Jordan but,it had its good points. The book I think tells it good detail most of the time. The book at points made me want to drop the book and stop reading because it didn't tell me anything I didn't know already. At other times it made me not want to put it down because it retells the games that went on.Overall this book ok not the best but it's a good book if you havn't already read a book and Jordan.
- I was writing stories before MJ was shooting hoops. I was published before he warmed the bench at Laney High School. I've scored more rejection letters than he has points in a game, and in fact I got another one last week. MJ, my classmate, you in my house now!
What? He wasn't involved with this book? Damn.
I really don't have any interest in the NBA. I admire some of the players who've played over the years, I always enjoy reading a well-written bio about an interesting person, I marvel that we (myself included) idolize some celebs the way we do, I'll drop just about anything to watch an MJ highlight reel, and one reason I was cheering him on during his 21st century comeback was that we were both born in 1963.
So what about the book? Well, first I wanted to establish that I'm not a sports nut, unless we're talking about the NFL. That means that, if you don't care about the NBA either, my book review might be of interest. Now let's read.
Well, I read two of its thirteen chapters, 40 of its 300 pages. I guess you do have to be a basketball fan to enjoy it. Very knowledgeable author, but just not what I want to read. Oh well. I still love Michael.
- This book is just bad, little inside info on what was going on, bar a few quotes that are hardly "inside info". The book has little organization, going over the same things again and again, and worst of all, reads like a perpetual box score, which face it, you could have got yourself from a newspaper backlog.
This doesnt come close to "JORDAN RULES" by sam smith, which is a shame, as it could have given us a much more clear picture of the "3rd coming"
- This book looks like the author took some newspaper and magazine clips from others and cobbled them together in a sloppily written book devoid of insight. He has nothing of value here. And it's particularly disappointing that he would try writing a book about Jordan's comeback in Washington when it's obvious he spent little time, if any, traveling with the team during Jordan's Washington days. This book reeks of a clip-and-paste job. Don't waste your money.
- Like thousands if not millions of other people around the globe, Michael Jordan is easily my favorite athlete of all time - nobody else is even in the same galaxy. When I started watching NBA games on television, it was Michael Jordan's game that I found I enjoyed watching the most. These days, nearly two years after his final retirement, I'm like I'll always be until I die: I'm such a Michael Jordan fan that I have several of his highlight videos, videos of taped games, and a few books that are about him. I'm such a big fan that a few of my friends and family members have asked me, "Is Michael Jordan your role model?" Well no, I don't really have a role model but there would certainly be nothing wrong with that if he was. I just LOVE watching him play the game of basketball and I enjoy reading what others have to say about him. Oh yeah, and I don't hesitate to tell and show people that Michael Jordan answered one of my e-mails on his official site!
One Last Shot - The Story of Michael Jordan's Comeback is very satisfying for the latter. As mad as I was that he called it quits in 1998 and as thrilled as I was to see him make yet another comback in 2001 at age 38, I always asked, "Why?" Why, after having 9 out of 10 say he's the greatest player the game has ever seen and about a year after being named the greatest athlete of all time in ANY sport by ESPN's Sportscentury, would he return as an old man (by NBA standards) to risk his legacy by not even making the playoffs, missing dunks, and not even being named to any All-NBA teams?
The author of One Last Shot, Mitchell Krugel, really has done his homework. Jordan quotes are scattered throughout the entire book like leaves that descend from trees in the fall; you'll read about why MJ ultimately decided to come back for the "third coming", hear details about his wife filing for divorce at the worst possible moment, read about Michael's executive life with the Wizards, and probably best of all, read and learn about how close he came to doing the unthinkable: furthuring his legend, and how it didn't quite happen.
If you followed Jordan's latest comeback via watching games on television and listening to a lot of ESPN and other sports shows, you'll find yourself remembering and nodding in agreement to A LOT of what you'll read in One Last Shot. I know I certainly recall being one of those people that were sitting on the edge of my seat as MJ received the pass in the 2002 All-Star Game en route to a ......MISSED dunk, but did you know that this game brought Ali and Frazier back together for the first time since the Thrilla in Manila? Do you remember when several sports anchors were predicting the Wizards just may be the team to beat in the Eastern Conference? How many game-winning shots did he have? What did Michael Jordan do that he hadn't done since the '92 season? Who all was invited to the scrimmage games leading up to this final comeback, and who didn't ever show up??
Even with all you know from watching and reading about MJ's latest comeback, you'll get even more detailed insight to things that happened that you would've never known before. When you're done enjoying your reading and learning of the ups and downs of the greatest player of all time's final comeback, you're treated to an "Aferword" that's all about the 2002-2003 (final) season of his career. And if that wasn't enough, the "Appendix" consists of a game-by-game analysis of the 2001-2002 season. It tells the day the game was played, where, what the final score was, and has two sections: The Game Story and On This Date In MJ History. Awesome!
Learning all the more about MJ's comeback isn't all that's good in One Last Shot. The author is obviously a good writer - he writes in a way that keeps you interested from beginning to finish, and he has a sense of humor along with seeming to choose just the right statistics and quotes to include most of the time. There are even eight pages of photographs with captions included. The only thing I didn't like about reading One Last Shot is that at (many) times it seems disorganized. The author tends to jump around a bit. You'll read about a game mid-ways into the 2001-2002 season and then be transported back to a long memory of the Chicago Bulls seasons or back to the beginning of the Wizards season. That's not TOO offsetting, but I didn't particularly like having to reread certain parts to find out what part of MJ's career it's talking about now.
But I won't mind rereading the entire book in the future at all. One Last Shot is a liftime keeper for any major Michael Jordan fan or even for a casual fan that's interested in learning why he made this latest comeback. It has more to do with ego and how he was thrusted out of Chicago before he wanted to be than you would ever think.
Scroll to the top of this page and check out the price. With what you get (8 pages of photos, 320 pages, and game-by-game analysis), it makes me wonder why this wasn't a New York Times Bestseller and why it doesn't have at least 50 reviews up already.
