5 comments about Bill Madden: My 25 Years Covering Baseball's Heroes, Scoundrels, Triumphs and Tragedies.

  1. This is without a doubt the most plodding utterly boring peice of tripe I have ever had the displeasure of reading. Madden's incessant jumping from one name drop to another with no thought of story or backing is painful at best. Rather than form any kind of thoughtful baseball memior, it comes off as pages and pages of "look who I met one day!" I would soundly beg anyone with any thought of reading material to bypass this tripe without a second thought.

  2. THIS BOOK IS A COLLECTION OF INTERVIEWS, STORIES AND INSIGHTS ABOUT VARIOUS PLAYERS, COACHES AND OWNERS. IT COVERS SUCH PLAYERS AS THE MICK, THE SCOOTER, YOGI AND THE BOSS. IT COVERS A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT FACTS, FROM ADDICTIONS, FUNERALS, TO PERFECT GAMES. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT FOR BASEBALL AND ESPECIALLY YANKEE FANS. A MUST READ.

  3. The collaborative effort of sports journalist and baseball fan Bill Madden and the New York Daily News, Bill Madden: My 25 Years Covering Baseball's Heroes, Scoundrels, Triumphs And Tragedies collects Madden's most memorable stories from the "Daily News" archives. From World Series heroes to All-Star games, trades, hirings, firings, scandals, debuts, record-setters, Hall of Famers, the end of legends, and much more, Bill Madden surveys all aspects of the great sport and the dedicated albeit all too human individuals who devote themselves to it. A highly enjoyable compendium especially for baseball fans.

  4. New York Daily News sportswriter Bill Madden has provided us with a collection of his columns from the past 25 years. I like that the book is divided into chapters such as Remembered Friends, Scoops and Exclusives, Villains and Scoundrels, Tragedies and Travesties, and Colorful Characters to mention a few. I enjoy reading about events and people who were once part of the baseball scene that I remember. Most, but not all, involve the Yankees. You don't have to be a Yankees' fan, I'm not, but I still enjoy reading the articles of sportswriters in different parts of the country. If you are a fan of the Yankees, you will especially enjoy the book.

  5. This is an awesome collection of baseball articles and columns from Bill Madden, New York's best sports writer. Baseball fans will love this book.

There is a very interesting story on DiMaggio's relationship with his "long time friend and attorney" Morris Engelberg, who became the sold trustee for DiMaggio's estate when Joe passed away. Also, there are some good stories on Darryl Strawberry, Billy Martin, Fay Vincent, and, of course, George Steinbrenner.

    I highly recommend this book.

  1. Ryne hit a home run with this one. If your a baseball fan you will appreciate the knowledge of the game that he shows throughout the book. He's also not afraid to show that he may not have they same amount of exerience with relationships. This is one of those books that you sit down and read cover to cover.

1 comments about I Remember Joe Di Maggio: Personal Memories of the Yankee Clipper by the People Who Knew Him Best (I Remember Series).

  1. Unlike the Cramer book, this book relies heavily on firsthand anecdotes offered by people who knew Dimaggio. And it pretty much covers every aspect of his adult life. I loved it, and it allowed me to get to know the Yankee Clipper pretty well without author conjecture and hyperbole.

1 comments about Cap Anson 4: Bigger Than Babe Ruth--Captain Anson of Chicago (Cap Anson) (Cap Anson) (Cap Anson) (Cap Anson).

  1. The work of serious baseball historians tends to fall into two main categories; excellent writing short on research and extraordinary research spoiled by pompous, often pedantic prose.
Then there's Howard Rosenberg. Rosenberg's "Cap Anson 4" the recently released...biography of one of the game's first "superstars" is as compelling as the latest James Patterson thriller and as meticulously well-researched as a successful doctoral thesis.
Adrian C. Anson was the first player to get 3,000 hits, arguably the greatest player-manager of all-time and a pivotal figure in the creation of baseball's shameful color line that kept Black players out of the majors for more than 60 years.
Rosenberg doesn't flinch from the accusations of Anson's racism, nor does he gloss over the Hall of Famer's other foibles and eccentricities. The book contains literally hundreds of footnotes and citations and perhaps thousands of newspaper quotations.
Rosenberg poured over thousands of ancient newspaper clippings and archives. He concluded that in the 1880s and '90s writers were given a virtually free hand and did a superior job of capturing the mannerisms of players and painting pictures with words." He added "By the first decade of the 1900s, photography was a major presence and writers would, overall never be as independent and thus as interesting again."
That may have been true for the vast majority of baseball writers including those plying the trade today. But it is certainly not true of Rosenberg.
If you're at all interested in the early days of the "great America game," you can never go wrong reading Howard Rosenberg.

5 comments about Celebrating 70: Mark Mcgwire's Historic Season.

  1. Relive Mark McGwire's historic 1998 assault on the single season home run record with this magnificent book overflowing with full-color photos and amusing anecdotes. "Celebrating 70" charts the slugger's season, home run for home run, and features a bevy of information - complete with pictures - including the date of each long ball, the distance, and which pitcher was christened with the dubious distinction of yielding one of Big Mac's clouts! Along the way, you can read a brief summary for each game McGwire applied his trade. The pictures have been well chosen, conveying the emotion of each moment. The text matches the shear exuberance of the images, and Jack Buck's forward is simply splendid.

  3. The 1998 baseball season was truly one of the most magic in recenty years, thanks in part to the "home run battle" between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. This book chronicles their achievement which I suspect will grow to legendary tones in the years to come. The sportmanship between these two hereos was evident all season long, and the book reflects that.

Perhaps it was fitting that McGwire should wind up in a city that is a true "baseball town," and one that could truly love and cherish his accomplishment. I remember watching the game on TV where McGwire broke Babe Ruth's home regular season home run record and even the Cub players stood and applauded him. This book remembers that.

It starts off with pictures of McGwire and a nice foreword by Jack Buck, the longtime St. Louis Cardinals' broadcaster. There's also a brief story about Maris and Ruth, the men McGwire chased for most of that long summer. And then the home runs. Each page is devoted to a description of each one; the date, the opposing pitcher, the final score and so on.

Reading through each page brought back all those wonderful memories of the 1998 season for me. This book is a wonderful treasure and keepsake to celebrate an incredible baseball season by one man.

  4. For the strongman from Pomona, California playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Summer of '98 was one long victory parade. A reminder of seasons past & a celebration of baseball future. He became a national hero & role model with class. He gave baseball back its luster. In this large, glossy, colorful homage to one fabulous boy of summer - the team of writers, photographers, designers & editors has given us a memorable, collectible, hit-by-hit, play-by-play story of a modern grand adventure. What a gift!

  5. It was a fabulous book which relived all of the excitement of the homerun-record chase of the 1998 baseball season. The photographs are excellent and the text is very well-written as well. The exact distance, pitcher, count, inning, and stadium are given for every one of "Big Mac's" homers, with at least one picture for each. Not only does it cover McGwire's homers, but it also covers the homeruns of Sammy Sosa. The introduction by St. Luis Cardinal announcer, Jack Buck is nice too. Overall, Celebrating 70:MARK MCWIRE'S HISTORIC SEASON is a must-have for any baseball enthusiast.
