5 comments about Draw 50 Cats: The Step-by-Step Way to Draw Domestic Breeds, Wild Cats, Cuddly Kittens, and Famous Felines.

  1. I have a very artistic child and another child who isn't quite as artistic. Both love this book and others from the "Draw 50" series. The one has a blast changing little things and making the pictures his own and the other has fun realizing that she too can create some cool pictures with the easy to follow instructions. This particular book has some wonderful cats featured from your common tabby to more unique household cats and large wild kitties. It's definitely worth the money.

  2. I wanted to draw more realistic cats
and this book showed me that I needed to start with the head shape
and not the ears. There was not a lot of writing, just good step-by-step instruction. From my first drawing with this book, my drawings have improved. I highly reccomend this book!

  3. This is the best drawing book I have gotten to date. It gives detailed instruction. Almost immediatley I was able to draw realistic looking cats. Using the techniques in the book I was able to expand and draw other animals as well.

  4. I am teaching my students to draw cats using this book. I like the step-by-step drawings and the different position and types of cats.
We have gone one step further in class by making our own stationery and cards using our finished drawings. We add a complimentary quote to our drawing from the book 516 Sensational Cat Quotes, Proverbs, Quips and Jokes for Scrapbooking, Crafting and Fun ISBN 0966640578
Teachers, have your student make a copy of the original so that they can make numerous copies. Save the originals.
Great drawing book. I highly recommend it.
We are having fun in class.

  5. My daughter borrowed some of these books from the school library & loved them so much i bought some for her. It goes step by step with you, giving examples,to show you how to make wonderful drawings.Great book for anyone who likes to draw.

5 comments about The Horse: 30,000 Years of the Horse in Art.

  1. This book was purchased to be given as a gift for an artist who often paints horses in his large compositions,
Paul Jacobsen. The book was delightful and better than expected. The chapters have themes which mix the large color reproductions from different periods of art history. It is interesting to go through again and again.
This gift was received with enthusiasm and gratitude. It would be a great coffe table book for anyone to own.

  2. As the author of the Dictionary of British Equestrian Artists I was delighted to discover paintings and artists I had never seen before. This is a beautiful book that has a lot of fresh pictures as well as the better known ones. Fantastic value. Highly recomended! Sally mitchell.

  3. I just received this book and I was blown away. I am a horse owner and equine artist and have many, many horse art books and not a one can hold a candle to this book. It doesn't go into the history too much but every page has a large piece of art on it and a nice description. The colors are amazing. The book is huge. You have to buy this book! You will not be disappointed.

  4. Wow! Double Wow!! I received this book for Christmas and have found myself lost in its sensual tantilizing imagery many times. What a wonderful education it serves up!

  5. As a lover of art as well as horses I was looking forward to receiving this book, but was unprepared for the visual, sensual impact of it. Page after page of beautifully reproduced art featuring the horse, art from every corner of the world, and from every stage of mankind's affair with the horse. From cave man's early attempts on cave walls to illustrations from a book of 13th Century "Farriery" in Istambul, from 2000 year old Chinese sculpture to Michaelangelo's sketches, Roman terra cotta bas relief to 20th century American Indian and cowboy art, from 15th century woolen tapestries to modern "futurist" art... What a beautiful way to learn mankind's history as well as art history, all the while appreciating the form and beauty of the horse. It's a wonderful education, a fascinating read.

And what a lovely suprise for me to find two different pieces of art reproduced herein that are more than familiar to me... I have copies of them in my home! And now, thanks to Ms. Pickeral, I also have the history and the story to go with them.

Buy this book for anyone you know that has any interest at all in art, or history, or for anyone who ever loved a horse. It'll be a hit.

2 comments about History of Art: The Western Tradition.

  1. Hard Text Book with CD - Excellent Condition no markings, no highlites and bends, the soft books cover has wrinkle.

  2. In the introduction to this edition, Anthony Janson (whose father, H.W. Janson, still has top billing for the volume) talks about the long tradition he and his father have had toward this volume and the larger work that carries the same name. It has been a standard in Western art education for decades, and the revisions periodically placed serve to bring new interpretations, perspectives and finds into the mix of history.

Prior to diving into the depths of art, Janson provides a primer - art history is a relatively new discipline, and often studied by historians and others with interest but relatively little training in artistic areas themselves. This book is about the visual arts (those of drama, music, etc. are not included here, but architecture is to some degree); Janson gives a brief survey of key concepts that are critical to understanding the mediums (artists, Janson states, prefer to use the plural of medium as mediums rather than media). Geometric and visual appreciation concepts are introduced, as are philosophical/aesthetic ideas.

The majority of the text is divided into four broad sections: The Ancient World, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance through the Rococo, and the Modern World. This is a book that really a survey or history of Western art - it does have a brief section at the beginning of the Ancient World on cave art and neolithic art in North America, but apart from this never wanders outside the main courses of Western art even in the modern period. As an introductory text, this is not surprising - many of the values and concepts of art in non-Western cultures require more explanation for adequate aesthetic appreciation of their art than an introductory survey course could cover. Still, it is a deficit worthy of note for those who are looking for a more comprehensive volume.

The Ancient World covers art of Egypt, the Fertile Crescent and Persia, Aegean/Greek art, Etruscan art, and Roman art. The section on the Middle Ages begins primarily with the rise of Christendom as the dominant political power - this includes Byzantine art, early Medieval art (Carolingian and Ottonian times), Romanesque, and the ascendancy of the Gothic style, including the great Abbey of St-Denis. The Renaissance focusses early on Italy, but also explores the Renaissance influences in Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, France, and England. The Modern Period is the most diverse, with movements such as Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Art Nouveau and other schools that had a greater tendency to cross national boundaries. The twentieth century brought about a great explosion of artistic expressions, in architecture, sculpture, painting and photography, each of which get a chapter. While the fourth section begins with a discussion of modernism, it ends with the discussion of post-modernism, a period of transition.

The colour reproductions throughout are stunning, and the use of black-and-white images to highlight details is also useful. Two-thirds of the 600 illustrations are in colour. The photographs showing architectural styles are interesting, far from being boring 'sample' shots. The text is engaging and informative, achieving a good balance between the artistic, the philosophical and the historical. There are maps, chronological tables, a glossary of terms, suggestions for further readings arranged topically, and a very useful index (always a plus for students and scholars).

2 comments about Chinese Landscapes Made Easy.

  1. Regardless of your level of expertise, you will find this book useful. Its explanation of papers and brushes is very good. It simplifies brush techniques, use of inks, use of colors.etc. Though everything is concise and brief, all the needed information is there for landscape painting. If you want to do Chinese landscape painting, this is THE book. You will not find the classical approach of working through the "Four Gentlemen", but you will get everything you need to do Chinese-style landscapes without the frills.

  2. Hands down
this is the BEST source of informationa and technique for chinese landscape painting. A must have for the serious painter Joel Smith MD

1 comments about Paul Rand: Conversations with Students (Conversations With Students).

  1. A wonderful paperback essential for any Paul Rand student. And by student, I mean one who appreciates, admires, and learns from one of the greatest designers of the 20th century. This book begins where other Rand books leave off by giving us a personal, endearing (and sometimes cantankerous) perspective of Mr. Rand. Short but, oh so sweet - highly recommended!

3 comments about Contemporary African Art (World of Art).

  1. This book has great African Art. My great uncle Cecil Skotnes, whose artwork is in this book, has done great paintings. I find his art very interesting.

  2. Price wise the book is a bargain. But the author is a little conservative in choice of artists. Why great artists like Jane ALEXANDER and Osmane SOW are not listed.

  3. This study provides an important examination of the major themes and accomplishments in African art over the past fifty years. Small black and white and a few color photos pepper the coverage but it's the orderly scholarship and history which will prove the attraction here, providing a strong introduction to the features and trends of modern African art.
