2 comments about Dissertation - An Architectural Student's Handbook (Architectural Students Handbooks).
- Well, I bought this book as a guildline for writing an architectural dissertation proposal. The book includes good suggestion of how to begin the dissertation, generate ideas, write proposal, conduct an architectural research as well as give sources. This book is great for architecture students who are in the beginning process of writing thesis and dissertation.
- Finally, a book on how to write a research paper, aimed at and written by architects! Other research methods books touch on what subjects to look at, how to go about analyzing information, etc, but rarely do they explain how to do a case study in detail, how to carry your "hypothesis" into your designs, and vise versa. This book should be a required text for anyone pursuing a professional degree in architecture!

1 comments about Metal: Design and Fabrication.
- As someone who has a background in the fine arts and who has recently began working at a metal shop I found this book to be an extremely valuable and understandable introduction into the world of metal fabrication. It is well writen with many color photograghs. It is not ment for the advanced metal worker, except maybe as a reference, but as a beginer it is a must read.

3 comments about Michael Graves: Buildings and Projects 1990-1994.
- The shame about this book is the rather cursory coverage given to Impiglia's early period OF SUCCESS.
Despite a major commission from a New York City Bank in the late 1970's, Giancarlo Impiglia was prolific in the early to mid-eighties in his production of serigraphs.
From initially selling 300 copies at $25 print (yes, hard to believe) in the early 1980's, and jumping to 200 copies at $600 a print by about 1987,
Impiglia's art quickly grew in stature, and price.
His work seemingly increased annually; $1500; $2000; $4000; $6000' $8000; $10000; $12000; $14000; $16000; $18000; $20000.
But, the art didn't change that much.
His early work was just as masterful, but the author doesn't cover this period in sufficient depth, I feel.
Impiglia's Dinner for Two represents as fine an example of his style and substance as any, and was as seminal for him, and his reputation in 1984, as Les Damselles D'Avignon was for Picasso.
Otherwise, there is much discussion of his work from about 1988 thru 1996.
I just feel that more time should have been spent going over his prolific "early period of success," when he gained great notoriety.
- I got this book as a father's day present and I absolutely love it. It has great photography of each of the finished projects, gives a brief description of the project and interesting facts about each. There are also photos of some of Graves' 3-d models for some concept buildings that never "made it to production", as well as a peppering of his wonderfully whimsical sketches. A must have for anyone interested in architecture or design, or anyone that has even a remote fascination into the beauty that is a Graves' design.
- A wonderful addition to the library of any Graves fan. Beautifully photographed, with wonderfully descriptive texts.

1 comments about Building by the Book: Pattern Book Architecture in New Jersey.
- This book was most helpful to me in my quest for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Finding subject matter specifically targeted for Pattern houses has been difficult.
For me, this book would have been worth purchasing just for the introduction. I especially valued the section on Foursquare houses; my home is a Foursquare, which is part of the basis of my nomination. The Sears Roebuck catalog houses and Craftsman sections were also very interesting. In all, "Building by the Book" reflects a thorough study in what is probably a neglected period of building, whereby middle class owners were enabled to build architect-designed homes which would otherwise have been reserved for the wealthy. Pattern books also provided direction for local builders. As a preservationist and owner of a brick Foursquare classical revival pattern house built in the 1920's Craftsman era, I am hopeful that more of these homes will be saved for future appreciation. They generally exhibit a uniqueness that precedes the builder/developer subdivisions we see today. I had hoped to find some history on the "Architect's Small House Service Bureau of the United States, Incorporated", active in the 1920's, which was administered by the American Institute of Architects and from which my pattern house was derived. If anyone has information, I'd love to have know. Pattern houses were a boon to average citizens here and throughout the United States, enabling them to experience a share of the American Dream "that every American should be able to own a single-family house on its own green acre". The New Jersey study is an educational guide applicable across the nation.

1 comments about Reekie's Architectural Drawing.
- Don't buy this expecting to receive some giant tome that will look impressive on your bookshelf. What you would receive is a little, modest book that is full of information on architectural drawing and the equipment you would need, full of text and detailed drawings and not glossy photos of magnificent architecture with captions underneath. I used it to help me learn how to draw interiors, plans, perspectives. Thanks, Mr. Reekie, I couldn't have done it without you.

2 comments about Civil Engineering: Water & Wastewater Treatment Review (Civil Engineering (Engineering Press)).
- Don't get this for the PE exam, it blows.
- This is not a very detail review I feel. It is also the exact same text from the full Civil Engineering License Review book (the big book by Donald G. Newman). I returned this item since I already had the big book. It would be a good companion to have if you are not willing to purchase the big book and are planning on taking the Civil PE Exam.
