2 comments about ARE Practice Exam: Multiple-Choice Divisions.
- this is one of the best Brief book of Q/A which prepares you for the final ARE of all the subjects. -satyen
- Although this book is just question and answer, it definately introduces the complexity and broad range of questions asked on the exam to the candidate. I found that, although the exam does ask a broader range of questions than this study guide, it does help tremendously. I do recommend this study guide for the ARE. I did find however, that several questions in this manual (maybe 5% to 15%) were repeated in other study material. Other than that - I'd invest the money and get it.

2 comments about From the Center: From the Center.
- A great book illustrating what Sci-Arc is and does for the institution of Architecture. Sci-Arc is clearly pushing the boundary as to what is preceived as architecture not only within itself but also for the community in whole. A good choice if interested in thinking how architecture can be understood on a deeper level or from a educational stand point of what is Sci-Arc philosophy. Also, Thom Mayne won the Pritzker Architectual Award this year who is one the guys that founded Sci-Arc.
- Founded in 1972 as a radical alternative to conventional architectural education, SCI-Arc continues to defy the standard model of an academic institution. According to Neil Denari, SCI-Arc's Director,"since its beginning, the school has always been about ideas of progress and the frontier, by exploring architecture as the fusion of aesthetic, social and cultural concerns." SCI-Arc is continuing that traditional by teaching people to see, design and develop things other people don't see -by not only educating architects, but also by the school's lecture series, community projects, exhibitions, and publications such as this one by Monacelli.
Anyone interested in education, design and/or the creative process should enjoy this book!

1 comments about Fractal Geometry in Architecture & Design.
- Bovill does a good job of explaining the principles of fractal geometry in layman's terms for those not already familiar with them. I was particularly impressed with his understanding of how fractal dimension varies with scale and which scales are important for architecture. However, I was disappointed that there were no references made to structural properties of fractals and how they might have excellent strength to weight ratios for a wide range of scales. Everything was taken from a design perspective concerned with texture.

2 comments about Masted Structures in Architecture (Butterworth Architecture New Technology Series).
- The book offers critical insights into a large collection of tensile structures around the world. Although one would wish for more colour pictures, the information provided is informative and could easily be followed if needed. The book is suitable for professionals and students alike. However, given the rapid development in this area, I wonder if the authors would consider publishing a revision or an expanded edition. Overall, very well done.
- Being one of the authors of this book. It is difficult to write an impartial review. However, if anyone wish to contact the authors, you can email me at
