3 comments about Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin Fellowship.
- I thought I knew a lot about Frank Lloyd Wright after studying his work at length in college and beyond, but this book definitely opened my eyes to a lot of things about the man, his family, his apprentices, about other influencial people around him, and about how he was able to accomplish what he did with their help.
This is definitely a companion book that is good to read with other books about him, including his autobiography, as well as in concert with visiting FallingWater, which is a museum now, as well as other houses and famous structures such as the Guggenheim Museum.
- FLW's Taliesin Fellowship is a fascinating study of how an organization evolves as the people in it prosper, then age and die. The community is particularly significant because of Wright's architectural legacy, but there is so much more than the architecture involved. The stories that Fellowship members tell about the Wrights and their lives in the Taliesin community are truly compelling. If you're interested in communal societies, business development, and the creative process leading to many of Frank Lloyd Wright's greatest works, this book is essential.
- Myron and Shirlet Marty have given us a book that tells the story of the Taliesin Fellowship through the words of its members who have remained in what the Martys describe as "intentional community." Many of these apprentices knew and had worked with Wright before his death in 1959, most of the rest were members during the 26 years that Mrs. Wright directed the Fellowship until her death. Students of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture since that time give a hint of the future for Taliesin. The Martys interviewed these apprentices and arranged excerpts in what becomes an excellent description of life at Taliesin and the Fellowship experience from their point of view. What is needed now is a second volume, which Professor Marty has said he will consider. This would include interviews with apprentices who chose to leave Taliesin after various periods of time and for various reasons, including the feeling that Mrs. Wrights agenda varied considerably from that of Mr. Wright.

5 comments about Golf Course Architecture: Design, Construction & Restoration.
- Starts off very well with the hope that it will get more technical but instead becomes more theoretical in areas such as aesthetics and fine art, areas which the author seems to not have a background in. ie, his discussion of perception, symmetry and balance etc. If you can skip the middle chapters its not bad but again I had hoped for more technical insights. Perhaps I needed a book on golf course construction. I just assumed from architecture courses that construction issues and recommendations as well as more detail of layout relative to game play would be discussed.
- This is one of five best technical books I ever found. As a beginner in golf course design, I found in this book all I needed to realize my projects.
- This is a fascinating book for any golf enthusiast or historian, as well as an essential practical resource for anyone actively involved in golf course design, construction and maintenance.
The design process progresses from the green to the individual hole to the entire course. Detailed technical information is well integrated with aesthetic and theoretical concepts making the entire book interesting & readable. The book is packed with color photos of individual holes to illustrate design concepts, sites under construction and wonderful historical documents. The technical drawings & plans are well done and very useful. This book is a great example of making a technical manual a joy to read. Any golfer who appreciates the background of the course he or she is playing on will love it.
- This book is filled with wonderful pictures from cover to cover. An incredible collection of the worlds most famous golf courses and designers.
- Simply an outstanding look at the fascinating process of taking a piece of land and sculpting a chapmionship layout. A step-by-step process that details the many intricacies and disciplines involved in creating a golf course. Any golfer will more fully appreciate the not only what they see on a course, but also what they "don't" see. The photos and illustrations are plentiful and precise in leading one through each phase of construction. Must reading for an serious student of the game. Kevin Burke

1 comments about Effective Real Estate Sales & Marketing.
- I have read many (and when I say many I mean at least 100 or more) books on real estate, and this is by far the absolute best book. It is an easy read, but do not be surprised if it takes you a long time to read it, I find myself lost in thought and the end of each chapter, figuring out ways to implement the information. There is nothing in this book that you have never heard before, but the way it is all put together is great. I would say this book takes everything good I have read from all the other books and puts it in one place. In most of the other real estate sales books I have read, I find myself being disgusted with the "sales tactics" recommended, they made me feel sleezy just thinking about using them. So far in this book I have not come across anything like that. It is refreshing to see that the old pros that write books aren't all a bit on the shady side.
A few months ago I opened my own brokerage, and when I start bringing other agents on board, I am strongly considering giving each a copy of this book to read, especially the agents new to the industry.
