2 comments about Architectural Programming & Predesign Manager.

  1. this book is the best what i read about the architectural programming, I take a few informations and I use it in my projects.

    thanks

  2. And I mean "enthusiastically" very pragmatically. This book is a refreshing addition to my resource collection because it opens up alternative methods to approach programming. I come to this stage of the process with much more confidence and resolve because I have this great book to consult If I should get stuck somewhere.

If you are a person that is seeking to become powerfully informed about this stage of designing, or if you are a person seeking to supplement some additional points of view about programming, this book would serve you extremely well.

2 comments about Graphic Guide to Frame Construction: Student Edition.

  1. While having basic homeowner construction skills, I am not a builder or member of the construction trades. However, I referenced this book continually while building my own wood frame structure. I found it to be well organized, clearly written, and extremely helpful. As its title suggests, this book is focused for those students and beginning professional whose expereince and understanding is at the novice or student level. As such, I feel it meets this need perfectly.

  2. Don't be fooled by this more expensive and watered down version of The Graphic Guide to Frame Construction : Details for Builders and Designers by Rob Thallon. Kang has added a little explanation and deleted a lot of drawings in creating his book. Your money is better spent on Thallon's original version. It's much cheaper.

5 comments about Architectural Graphic Standards, Student Edition, 8th Edition.

  1. Through 3 years I had this book while in school, it was an invaluable resource. As many of you know, the work done in arch. school is very design/idea based, and not necessarily rooted in a feasible final product. However, I strived to include as many true-to-life elements in my design, and this book got it done for me. Many standards and sizes, etc. that had my classmates scrambling around on the internet or looking through dozens of books to find were easily found in the index of this book. It eventually became a class resource for a couple semesters until people bought their own.

As a professional, many people's firms have a specialty or three. For instance, I work for a healthcare firm at the moment. However, as a student, you can run the whole gamut of different building types. Despite how far-out some of my designs were, the fact that they were rooted in current, workable building methods and systems that were detailed out helped me immensely when applying for jobs. Knowing the details and showing them in your design is not only good for your reputation, but good for ability as an architect.

I'd recommend this to many arch students if the price is right for you. I happened upon it at a time with the book (no CD) was around $80 or $90. Of the dozens of textbooks I still have, this is one resource book I know I'll be consulting for a while.

  2. Great book. Really Highlights the shortcomings of the modern addition of this book. I highly recomend this book for students and practicing architects.

  3. For over 70 years, architects have been using a valuable reference book, "Architectural Graphic Standards."

"Architectural Graphic Standards" is organized roughly per the CSI Masterformat divisions, including general planning and design data, sitework, concrete, masonry, metals, wood, thermal and moisture protection, doors and windows, finishes, specialties, equipment, furnishings, special construction, conveying systems, mechanical, electrical, sports, energy, history preservation, etc.

"Architectural Graphic Standards" has 1072 pages (9.6 x 11.8 inches large format) and numerous line drawings. This new edition has expanded and new content covering contemporary issues. It is a must-have for architects, landscape architects and urban planners, interior designers, engineers or any other building-related design professionals.

  4. I got this book for my cousin who just became an Architect in Ecuador. The cover was a bit damaged, but he was able to fix it my "making" a new cover. He is very pleased with the book. For the price paid, it was worth it.

  5. The reprsentation was not clear this is a reproduction of a 1935 published book. This is not usefull in todays building enviroment.

3 comments about Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing: Basic Fundamentals (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).

  1. This text/workbook provides excellent training on the basics of GD&T. The book is easy to read and uses extensive examples. The content makes the ASME standard understandable. The chapters are organized in a logical sequence. The first two chapters provide a very important overview of dimensioning, tolerancing, and an introduction to GD&T symbology. This helps lead you into learning GD&T concepts gradually and solidly as basic elements build toward more complex technology. The book provides a review test after each chapter and a comprehensive final test covering all concepts. Each chapter also has projects for the drafting students and print reading exercises for the manufacturing students. Additional tests, and projects are found in the Instructor's Guide along with sample course syllabi. Use this book if you want a text that clearly and easily teaches you the GD&T basics.

  2. This book is comprehensive in scope but lacks insightful explanations. The overview chapters at the beginning confuse rather than orient the reader. As someone who has done technical writing for a commercial software package I recognize this as the first draft which covers the material but has yet to be rewritten in a way that will best orient the new user. I expect more given the high prices of technical books. As a student I certainly disagree with what the instructors have to say about the book!

  3. I am a college instructor, and have taught classes using this text. It is an excellent choice for use in a classroom setting. The chapters are laid out in a logical order so the student progresses through the concepts in a meaningful manner that leads to thorough understanding of the standard. The diagrams and examples are well designed and explained. The chapter exercises, tests, and drawing problems are useful to the instructor and educational for the students.

In addition to being a classroom text, it is a very good reference book for the work place. It will be useful to anyone in the engineering, drafting, inspection, programming and machining departments. The engineer and draftsperson will use this book as a reference to develop drawings that adhere to the ANSI and ASME GD&T standards, and it will assist others in the interpretation of the drawings.

I recommend this book to anyone who is taking a GD&T class or wants to teach themselves this very useful standard.

5 comments about Designing and Drawing for the Theatre.

  1. The text provides names of existing professionals in all the fields of theatre design. It provides many production photos and technical drawings to use as examples. The book also provides something unique: interviews with designers and draftspeople. If you are looking for a general guide to design, this is a great source for visuals. It contains a step by step guide on the design process, but in reality it is a general guide on how to design without messing up royally.

  2. I ordered this book after reading evryone's raving rviews, and expected to get a really great book. I must say, though, that I was disappointed. Depending on what kind of book you are looking for, it can be good or bad. What the book does have is immense collections of details for different objects - dozens of different window frames, for example, or many options for stair railings. What I found missing from this book is theory. The author talks lengthly about all sorts of details such as how long it takes to strike different kinds of sets, or what kinds of specifications a scenic shop needs in order to build a set. All of this stuff is pointless if you haven't yet designed a set. I think that the author should either have talked about different scenic styles, disscussed the use of color and proprtions and talked about the creative process involved in designing a set and being part of a whole production. Since she did not do this, I suggest that in her next edition of the book she remove the word "design" from the title. I also suggest that she arrange the pictures (which are actually great) so that on the page where she writes about a certain kind of scenery, there are pictures of those kinds of sets - especially since she had the right pictures stuck in different parts of the book so it is just a matter of putting them onto the right pages.

One thing that I found exclusive to this book as opposed to other books (aside from the lack of solid content and over-abundance of pointless precticalities) was the extensive interviews with designers such as Ming Cho Lee and John Napier. All though her questions as well kept on missing the point and dealing with irrelevant pracicalities, it is amazing to find such a collection of interveiws. Though you must agree with me that it is very stupid to have a chance to talk to some of the greatest designers of the century and then ask them questions like "So how many inches apart were the backdrops hung when the were flown?" or "What were the exact dimensions of the conveyor belts that you used in 'Annie'?". The questions that I would have liked to hear the answers to are things that you couldn't ask anyone else, such as "So what made you decide to use that particular style?" or "What kind of artists, if any, have effected your designs over the years?".

So this is a great book if you already know what you are doing in theater design and need some workshop techniques and to copy Ms.Pecktal's doorframes and wallpaper patterns.

  3. excelent for the student studing scene design, it goes over all the basics a person will need to know when coming into this feild, like how to book your self, how to arive at a concept and tools, skills and knowlege you will need to have to be a great scene designer.

  4. This wonderful book, though pricey, is worth every penny. It's full of hundreds of pictures, great interviews with designers, and lots of reference materials (pages of doors or windows or chairs or whatever else it is that you need). Whenever I'm stuck on a design, I can always find inspiration--or at least hours of distraction--in this book. Especially useful for the begining design student.

  5. There is simply no other book available today on this subject that can compare. Every library and serious professional needs to own a copy. Put it on the shelf with the priceless (and long out of print) "Stage Design Throughout The World" series. Included are hundreds of illustrations of the work of the best American theatre designers: undeniably the most influential and dynamic designers in world theatre during this period. It illustrates what is likely to be known as the high-water mark of American theatrical design. Anyone who has ever done compelling design work in the theatre is here. Students, professionals and amateurs, indeed, anyone who loves the performing arts, will devour it at one sitting then browse with deepened pleasure over a lifetime. A "must have." Get it before it goes out of print!
