1 comments about Small Rooms for Kids (Design).

  1. Don't let the title fool you - it is not at all about small rooms. It is about the efficient use of space combined with exciting colors shapes and forms. There are some really great ideas in this volume.

5 comments about Tropical Houses: Living in Nature in Jamaica, Sri Lanka, Java, Bali, and the Coasts of Mexico and Belize.

  1. These luscious photos capture the beauty of the tropics in a way that someone who has really lived there would know. These homes are not just show pieces, they are lived in and loved.
I first bought the author's work almost thirty years ago-he was doing open doors and bikes against European doorsteps as postcards. The colors were just as defined as they are in this book. He has a feel for the sublime as well as the intracies of daily life.

  2. We are building a house in a tropical area and this book had some wonderful inspiring ideas. Best Tropical book out right now.

  3. Excellent book with something for all tastes. Beautiful pictures make you want to go home and decorate immediately.

  4. The cover is just a teaser to the exciting tropical houses Tim Street-Porter captures in this wondeful book. A real treat to exclusive tropical living around the world. Also an excellent reference to decorate in the tropical look. Street-Porter does it again as he did in Casa Mexicana. A book to enjoy over and over.

  5. We are trying to get an "island" feel for our home and this book was the perfect reference. Not only are the pictures of the homes (inside and out) breathtaking, but there is enough detail about the decorating itself to be useful for our purpose. The only downside is that it makes you want to sell your current house and just travel the world staying in these amazing homes! Especially tempting is the contact information at the very end in case you actually want to rent one of them on vacation...

4 comments about Tropical Living: Contemporary Dream Houses in the Philippines.

  1. I just bought a copy of this book. The pictures are great. I have the following problems with the book 1) The title is sly and deceiving. The bolded letters say "Tropical Living", and the rest of the title are in smaller letters. I bought the book thinking the featured homes are architectural entities uniquely tropical. They were not. Instead, the book is a hodgepodge of pretty homes artificially grouped through some whimsy of the author. 2) The pictures are hard to follow when you read the text. My advice, save your money and get yourself a subscription to a home design magazine. You will be better off.

  2. If you are into tropical architecture, this sure is the book for you! Not much text which makes it of "worth" + great photography! Before planning a house, this sure is a must-have! Houses featured here has its owne individuality and character! Dont miss it!...

  3. This is a beautifully photographed and well-organized showcase of wonderful Philippine homes. The range of houses covered is amazing and you're sure to get inspiration from one of the many fine examples of East meets West design as well as the seamless blend of Spanish, Malay, and Western heritage that the Philippines has. The homes are fabulous and even if you aren't thinking of redecorating, you will be after you finish it. One of the things that I particularly like about this is that unlike many books on Asian homes which focus only on either architectural design OR the interiors, this one gives a good balance of both. I just wish that the book had more pages.

  4. This was truly a feast for my senses. The Filipino elite is a highly sophisticated, well travelled, cosmopolitan, tropical, and casually elegant group who have developed a blended taste and style of their own. This book could be renamed "Tropical Dream Homes of the Philippines Rich and Famous". What is truly visible in this book is the rich diversity and fusion of the different cultures - Chinese, Spanish, Indonesian, Malaysian, and American - creating a Philippine cosmo-Asian blend. I highly recommend this book.

3 comments about Contemporary Asian Bedrooms (Contemporary Asian Home Series).

  1. Not as helpful or as interesting as I had hoped. I can find better ideas for Asian modern decorating in my vintage issues of Architectual Digest, especially from the late 1940s through 1960.

  2. This book on bedrooms is one of a series of books on the design of modern homes in Asia. In this book, gone are the traditional views we have in mind of the small sleeping mat on the floor of the traditional Japanese bedroom.

Instead, these homes are primarily located further south: Bali, Singapore, Thailand. Here the beds are more in the traditional western style, elevated above the floor with traditional pillows and coverings. Still however, the location in Asia, with Asian architects and customers provides for design touches that are both striking and subtlely different from the standard American design. For instance many of the designs have updated appearing mosquito netting. This reflects more on the history of the location rather than the current needs in locations where these homes are located.

Beautifully photographed and printed, this book will serve as an idea book for ideas that could well be incorporated into standard western designs.

  3. It's typically and exclusively fantastic book. It helps me decorate my home in Asian style. Highly recommend it to all readers and Asian-styled fans.

4 comments about The New Step-by-Step Home Decorating Projects (Singer Sewing Reference Library).

  1. This is a very clearly demostrated how-to book. It offers great ideas and the directions to accomplish the projects. I find it invaluable. I have several how-to books and this is the best by far.

  2. I liked the examples and the layout of the products. The easy step by step guide for a novice like me that is understandable

  3. There are tips on window treatments I didn't find in any other books, that alone was worth the money for me. However a lot of the color choices are a little dated, and the instructions are sparser than in other books. Still there is a lot of inspiration here.

  4. most of the book is helpful and well illustrated.however, i needed information about calculating drapery pleats and the book says to use pleater tape. no help there. Also, i needed information about sewing a swag and jabot and this Singer sewing book tells me a no-sew method on throwing a swag over a curtain rod. no help there. the rest of the book seems to be well thought out. they surely missed badly on the 2 items I needed information about.

1 comments about Bathrooms.

  1. For the Mexican Publishing House, AM Editores, who have released some good books in the past, series as Arquitectos Mexicanos, Espacios, and others, which nothing more than a collection of pretty photos without any architectural details, or drawings, and a directory of architects, which shows that the publications are just paid advertisement, and not a selection of architecture selected by the value of design.

The Small Book series is probably deceiving, as they are actually not small books, but thin, and very thin high quality brochures with a collection of photos that have already been published in prior collections.
At a modest price of 2.5 Dollars in Mexico, they cater to the architecture student, and the occasional architecture reader, who are eager to see some of the 'cool' and contemporary projects done by the not so famous Mexican Architects, often young and emerging.

I would skip the entire Small Book series collection, and buy their other full sized books.
