5 comments about Where Women Create: Inspiring Work Spaces of Extraordinary Women.

  1. This book was very inspiring. I definately got some good ideas that I'll try for my own studio (when I have one that is). And some nice ideas for around the home creation areas too. I love to create. This book is about others creation spaces. I can definately appreciate that!
    Create on!

  2. I bought this bought because I am designing my own studio and wanted some ideas. I found this book VERY inspiring and full of great ideas! I recommend it to anyone designing their own creative space!

  3. Delightful book, I especially enjoyed the "peek" into April Cornell, Kitty Bartholomew & Dee Gruenig's rooms!
Even though all the rooms where set-up for the photo shoot, if you look closely you will get an idea of their personalities...
Great photography and wonderful little Tips from the participants.

  4. The pictures are a feast for the eyes and an inspiration to both organize and create. It's easy to understand how working in these spaces helps these women create their works of art. I can look at the pictures over and over again and see something new every time.

  5. I really love this book. It is filled with rooms of true "artists" of all kinds. I personally like that "I work in this space and am inspired in this space look." If you are a "clutter free" person, this is not the book for you. It is not a book filled with junky artists' areas, but "organized, feel-good clutter." Hope my review helps.

5 comments about Tricia Guild Pattern: Using Pattern to Create Sophisticated, Show-stopping Interiors.

  1. inspirational and pleasant! an eye candy, a page turner, I could not get enough! Pages filled with interiors variations from vintage cottage to modern with a chock of color. Unexpected combinations of textiles and wall hangings mixed with truly amazing architectural details. the book is the celebration of eclectic style. Almoust every page shows a fantasy home, created with such ease, charm and playfulness - it's contagious.

  2. This book is eye candy offered at a great price! Wonderful photography, colors, and graphics.

  3. Out of all the books from Tricia Guild, this one is her very best, I think! I am a huge fan!!!

  4. You will not want to put this book down! If only I could magically transport myself to one of Tricia Guild's ethereal spaces...I would never want to leave. Opening this book is like taking a journey...it's an adventure in sumptuous fabrics, luscious colors and tactile textiles. Her patterns are romantic yet whimsical, and she masterfully juxtaposes modern and antique elements and motifs with themes of flowers and nature accented with candy colors! This book appeals to feminine sensibilities!

  5. This book is absolutely gorgeous, inside and out. Rich and colorful, it's a feast for the eyes! If you design interior spaces or home textiles, this book will be an especially great addition to your collection.

5 comments about John Fowler: Prince of Decorators.

  1. I was dissapointed with the lack of quality "full page color photos" inside this book. One can not get a sense of the cozy details in Fowler's designs, in the pics represented within. I found the book mostly a biographical story rather than an inspirational journey through Fowler's career. Don't be fooled by the intimacy presented on the cover...once inside you might be surprised by the lack of warmth.

  2. John Fowler has and will continue to inspire the way I decorate my home...this book is full of lovely illustrations and photos and a very interesting read

  3. I'm addicted to "house books", just as I'm addicted to houses. John Fowler has always been someone whose work I admire, and this book does an excellent job of charting his background and development as a designer. It's not necessarily a book you'll buy to get ideas for curtains from - but you'll understand better why his rooms were more comfortable, suitable and attractive than anyone else's before or since.

  4. OH, HOW I WISH TODAYS "INTERIOR DESIGN" GRADUATES AND MANY PRACTITIONER'S COULD OWN THIS BOOK AND DEVOUR ALL THE PHOTOS FOR THEIR CLASSIC BEAUTY!! THIS WAY THEY WILL KNOW WHAT GOOD DESIGN IS. THE INTERIORS DO STAND THE TEST OF TIME AND WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO LIVE...IN THIS DAY AND AGE IT IS ALMOST UNAFFORDABLE ON A LARGE SCALE TO DUPLICATE WHAT GENIUS JOHN FOWLER DID. IT CAN BE DONE ON A SMALLER SCALE.

RIGHT AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME WE LIVE IN AN ERA OF THAT HORRIBLE 50'S 60'S AND 70'S MODERN, WHICH IS SO COLD AND UNINTERESTING; AND LIKE A JACK DENST WALLCOVERING,THE LOOK IS DATED IN A MATTER OF MINUTES.

EVENTUALLY THE PENDULUM WILL SWING BACK TO GOOD DECORATING; WITH WARMTH. I WISH WE COULD GET BACK TO REALLY BEAUTIFUL DECORATING AND STOP THIS MADNESS OF PROMOTING TARGET AND WALMART CHEAPNESS.

JUST THROWING A BUNCH OF "STUFF" TOGETHER WITHOUT A PLAN AND A COMMON DENOMINATOR DOES NOT MAKE SENSE..THERE ARE TOO MANY SO CALLED "STARS" OF THE TV WORLD THAT PROMOTE BAD DESIGN AND DO NOT REALIZE THEY ARE MISGUIDING THE PUBLIC. THEY ARE JUST IN IT TO MAKE THEMSELVES FAMOUS....RIDICULOUS!!!

  5. With a remarkable memory for the smallest detail, imagination, and an appreciation of beauty, John Fowler was called "the Prince of Decorators." He may well have deserved that sobriquet, but in this lushly illustrated 240 volume we also learn that he was not a prince of a fellow.

Early in his career Fowler worked as a painter for Thornton Smith, commercial decorators. It was there that he learned to paint "the Chinese wallpapers that were so fashionable at the time", and also how to grime and distress furniture. Later, in 1928 or 1929 he set out to work on his own, often freelancing for other decorators. Following a series of commissions, a 1938 House Garden article placed Fowler among England's leading decorators. Rising from a salaried painter to this position in a decade was quite a feat.

More success followed as he joined Sybil Colefax in 1938. He was 32; she who enjoyed stature as a society hostess was 64. However, their alliance was dramatically affected with the outbreak of war when decorating all but stopped. After Sybil Colefax's death the firm of Colefax & Fowler was acquired by Nancy Lancaster, a Virginian whose work is thought of as "English style." She was to teach Fowler much about comfort and scale, "how large houses could be used and enjoyed in the modern world."

Fowler, who died in 1977, had an enviable client list. He transformed some of the most famous houses in England, and was commissioned by Buckingham Palace. The style created by the team of Colefax & Fowler endures today, English Country House Style represents not only decoration but a way of life. Many try to emulate it but none capture it as did John Fowler.

Those with an interest in twentieth century design will treasure this keepsake volume.

5 comments about Professional Practice for Interior Designers.

  1. thick book, man. I have to carry it to school for my class.
it has all need about Inerior Design profession

  2. The reviewer prior to myself I feel summed it up best when describing this book. The author has written the book as if she's always been your trusted friend. She writes in a way as if she is actually talking to you.

Other books I've read often come across a bit too technical and slightly over my head. This one is more down-to-earth, packed with good advice, and one can sense her sincere concern for the reader to understand.

I really love the entire book, especially the chapter dealing with ethics. Since there are many "seasoned" designers who seem to lack ethical conduct, this book is great for beginners and veterans alike.

  3. It was fast
    It was what I ordered
    Im happy, they're happy
    Win Win!

  4. I have practiced interior design for over 20 years and still found this book to be invaluable. The information about legal ramifications and insurance coverage was enlightening but also sobering. It's a must read for any design firm principal or freelance designer.

  5. This book reads like a friend whispering all the good advice and secrets of the interior design business in your ear. I wish my Professional Practices class had used this text. It's a lot of information but Christine Piotrowski truly takes you by the hand and lets you know what you need to prepare for in a budding interior design business as well as how the interior design business is done in general. I will be referencing this book again and again. A huge thank you and bravo to Christine Piotrowski

  3. Fabulous! Most comprhensive in the window covering industry. Which does make it large and heavy. Highly recommend this book

  4. Fast and simple, my title says it all. The book is well worth the cost, with wonderful sketches and terrific organization.

  5. This is a great source for interior designers, decorators or for Professional Workrooms. Any window treatment imaginable is available for the customer to view. Definitely a good investment.

5 comments about Time-Saver Standards for Interior Design and Space Planning, 2nd Edition.

  1. This is a required book for anyone in Interior Design for a good reason: it has about everything, including the (many kinds) of kitchen sink. What I really can't stand about using it is the seemingly arbitrary indexing, scattered locations for information and nearly impossible to decipher graphics on some pages. I do not agree that it has much useful information on furniture styles: you'd be better off to shell out for Aronson's "Encyclopedia of Furniture" or Miller's "Furniture" and get right to what you need. The standard dimensions are useful, though, especially for space planning purposes. Don't be surprised if there is information missing in some cases, or it is outright incorrect. Be sure to cross-reference and here's another tip: make a cheat sheet for yourself for the pages you use most, tape it to the inside cover and go from there. The Index is a goose-chase. Why three stars? Because I think they can do better. It is time for a rehaul of the Silver Monster.

  2. This is a tome of a book, and its contents are initially very impressive, but it STILL contains many old and out of date details which have been pulled and photocopied from projects that are rather worn and ragged looking. Also, many of the drawings are not legible due to size and lineweight quality, and so you may have to resort to pulling out a magnifying glass to decipher the information.

In my opinion, a superior resource is "Interior Graphic Standards" by Kelsey Kruse and Maryrose McGowan. Or, at least, one should have both books but check the information in this one against the far more accurate volume by Kruse/McGowan.

  3. Besides just being large and heavy, this book is filled with great information. For a beginner, it can be overwhelming, but it is definitely a book every designer should have on their bookshelf. It provides guidelines, dimensions, and tons of illustrations for creating the proper space. The book acknowledges designing for handicap, retail, hospitality and residential spaces. It reviews the standard sizes for furniture pieces, ceiling heights etc...Once you find what your looking for (through all of those pages), you definitely get good direction from the information provided on it.

  4. I am a last semester interior design student and just bought this book-I wish I had had it from the start! The book has nice sections on historical periods and furniture dimensions, residential, office, hospitality, retail, health care, banking and public restroom spaces, with lots and lots of plans, elevations and sections for each category. There is also a general reference section at the back of the book with lots of tables (space planning, wall covering or yardage amounts, as well as electrical and math tables). As well there is a nice colored section of wood and marble samples-a real time saver indeed!

  5. Very comprehensive source for specifications and details that are relivent to interior design. Not sure yet about the ebook.

5 comments about Feng Shui for Dummies.

  1. I checked this book out from a local library and it is the first fengshui book I have read. A little later, I started reading a few other books. Certainly, the humorous writing and easiness to read make me immediately realize that I should have paid more attention to this topic before and rearrange my place and office. Did some routine work following advice. Then I started feeling some beneficial changes. Just in a few weeks! Well, I will move on to more readings and practices... and thanks for the introduction. Nice job! I even thought about mailing them a red envelope with some coins as suggested in the book.

In an eastern culture, we need patience, intention and thankfulness to fullfil our goals.

  2. Feng Shui for Dummies isn't about real Feng Shui at all. Any Feng Shui practice that does not make use of compass readings, does not consider the interaction between the different phases of life-energy (i.e. "qi" and its five "elements") and does not take landforms into account is simply not real Feng Shui. Period. Ask any professional Feng Shui practitioners from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Malaysia and Singapore. Black Hat "Feng Shui" (which this book covers) was developed in the USA in the 80s and is an untested and dumbed-down fast-food version of the real thing, designed to appeal to Western sensibilities and need for simple classifications (i.e. the "aspirations"). Forget this book. Get The Complete Idiot's Guide to Feng Shui instead. Now THAT is a book you'd want to lay your hands on to get a feel of what real Feng Shui is all about - a science developed over the course of several thousand years in one of the world's oldest cultures.

  3. QUICK DELIVERY. GREAT BOOK, I HAVE 4 OTHERS & THIS BY FAR IS THE BEST. THANK YOU

  4. I laughed out loud when I got this book in the mail. Lesson learned...from now on I will read ALL descriptions MUCH more carefully! I was FULLY expecting a FULL sized book but got this tiny thing. Felt like I was dooped but checked and it does clearly say Miniatue Edition. Live and lern.

  5. To say I was disappointed when I recieved this 3 inch by 3 inch book would be an understatement. I have purchased numerous other books in the Dummy line so was not expecting this miniature book. Had I read the reviews like I usually do, I would have known and not wasted my money.
