1 comments about Furniture for the 21st Century.

  1. This is a richly illustrated, panorama of contemporary English furniture makers and their designs. Several pages of color photos are devoted to each artesian. If there is a focus it is on lamination and the blending of several materials with wood, such as metals and glass. The quality of the illustrations could allow one to faithfully adopt proportions and curves to ones own designs. I look foreward to similar books dealing with other cultures and countries.

4 comments about Art of Outdoor Lighting: Landscapes with the Beauty of Lighting.

  1. If you live in a 5 million dollar house, this is the book for you. If you have a 3000 sq foot cape cod, forget it. I purchased this book to learn how to light MY house. I don't have a 60 foot indoor pool, or a mountain top view of downtown LA. This book was of no use to me at all. I give it 2 stars because it has nice photos, of houses most of us will never see in person.

  2. This book is filled with examples from around the world of magnificent homes that are enhanced by stunning outdoor lighting effects. It is as much a gallery of artistic lighting as it is a sourcebook for the designer or homeowner looking for ways to make their home stand out.

The book is broken into sections with a brief overview of each before the many photographic examples. These include transforming a home after dark with dramatic lighting effects, creating a moon lighting effect and my favorite section on lighting pools and fountains with some really fabulous designs. There are also sections on outdoor rooms, landscape lighting and some wonderful ideas on using the view in through a window as part of the exterior design and lighting plan.

Full color, full-page photos fill most of the book. Brief descriptions are provided in captions along with designer and photographer credits. There is contact information for these designers and photographers along with some lighting manufacturers in the back of the book. This is a design book, not a technical manual. Each caption tells the type of fixtures used but there is no information on wiring or installation.

A very useful chapter on common lighting mistakes along with frequently asked questions and a glossary conclude the book. Although most of the examples in this book are of homes well beyond average means, many of the ideas and principles presented can be adapted to enhance almost any dwelling. I found it quite inspirational and enjoyable.

  3. Wonderful photographs but otherwise a bit thin. This is a picture book mostly of California projects with some colder climate installations so these lush landscapes can only be envied by homeowners and gardeners outside the semi-tropics. DIYers will find this particular meal consists more of dessert than substantial fare. The clear intention of this book is as a feast for the eye and the few pages of technical information consist of an overview of techniques, common mistakes (with which I heartily concur), Q & A and a glossary. There is a helpful list of lighting designers (the first I've seen) limited mostly to the West Coast. There are plenty of good ideas here and most of the photograph captions contain a brief but useful description of how the lighting effects were achieved.

  4. Simple... this book is extremely useful to me. You know I broguth a new house and it help me alot of design stuff... it saved us alot of design fee... worth to buy this boolk. Go ahead.

5 comments about Lighting: A Design Source Book.

  1. It is a beautiful book, but I was disappointed that there wasn't more on actual lighting theory.

  2. This book lightly touches on all aspects of lighting, some more heavily than other. But it definitely needs work in some sections. Also there is no mention of LCD, Natural Gas or Pipe Lighting, which should be addressed in any newer versions. The web links should also be checked and updated accordingly. Borrow it from the library first before you decide to buy it.

  3. First book I ever returned to Amazon because it was of unacceptable quality. The book should be titled "Pictures of pretty lighting fixtures" as the photographs are quite well done, but I found no useful information on the design of lighting. There is nothing on the subject of how to illuminate a room. Indeed you will see some examples of incredibly underlit rooms. They look good in the pictures because the photographer, Ray Main, has added what looks like a couple of thousand watts of bounce flash. You will see some kitchens where the people will need flashlights to cook their food. I did not see any room that looked adequately lit by the actual fixtures.

The discussion of fluorsecent lights is very disappointing. In the age of energy conservations the fact that fluorescent lights emit about 5 times more lumens per watt than incandescent lights makes them definitely worth considering. I had hoped to see some artistic ideas for using these interesting but awkward light sources, but there was very little and what there was was disappointing.

Kudos to Ray Main for beautiful photographs. Look somewhere else if you want "A Design Source Book".

  4. What they said! This book is very, very, good. Not only do you get excellent information on lighting, but wonderful ideas on contempory decorating. Two for the price of one, it doesn't get any better than that.

  5. On top of helpful tips and information about different types of lighting and lamps, the books lean heavily on lighting for more modern interiors. It does talk about universal applications in period styles, but I feel the author's interest is more on the modern side. Most of the photos and examples are taken from modern interiors. If you like contemporary and modern flavor, this is a book to miss! Definitely a keeper!

5 comments about Carolyn Quatermaine Revealed.

  1. I adore Carolyn Quartermaine! Several years ago I was captivated by a House Beautiful cover that featured gorgeous, lusciously colored printed silks. I saved the magazine, and later bought this book, only to open it and find the same photo. I was thrilled to finally find the artist who I'd been carrying in my head all those years. Carolyn is absolutely amazing, an incredible textile artist, as well as a beautifully creative individual. This wonderful book includes not only pictures of her work, but also a section on arranging food, and everyday objects that will make you feel like you've slipped into some heavenly version of Wonderland. An excellent book by an inspiring artist!

  2. This is my favorite decorating book of all time. It inspired me to experiment and create different looks, and I highly recommend it.

  3. French 18th century chandeliers swathed in organza, colorful Japanese candies in charming boxes, luxuriant fresh garden roses scattered across a ballgown skirt-if these images appeal to you, Carolyn Quartermaine Revealed is a must see. The book is a hybrid of fashion and interior design, and showcases fabric designer and collage artist Quartermaine's London flat.

Her home is also her studio, where she is constantly experimenting. She favors the romance and elegance of antique French pieces tempered by clean, airy surroundings. Passionate about color, Quartermaine appreciates beauty in both grand and mundane objects-from the peeling paint of a fine old gilded chair to a pretty ice cream wrapper. The exquisite photographs show yards of luscious silk in robin's egg blue, vivid pinks, and tangerine against a backdrop of crisp white. Calligraphy-both Asian and Western-is another passion of the artist. Her contemporary twists on the classics are smart, fresh, and entertaining.

Essentially Quartermaine seems to live in a splendid world of her own creation, and the book gives readers glimpse in to it.

  4. I found the book first class, but need more help from Carolyn's followers. I am studying at Staffordshire University for a BA (HONs) in Surface Pattern and my research is covering Carolyn Quartermaine. Information about her is limited. Can anyone help me anywhere please by sending me information at sylviroyal@aol.com Thank you so much.

  5. Not only are the pictures exquisite, but the text is extremely engaging. This book really speaks to me. Of all my design books (and I have a lot of them), this is my favorite. I re-visit it again & again. The introduction by Donna Karan says it better than I can. This is an inspiring and amazing book if you are passionate about color, art, fabric, antiquities, and most importantly objects with a genuine patina. You won't be disappointed!
