2 comments about French Interior - 18th. Century, the (Decorative Arts & Collecting).

  1. This is an excellent resource book for Artists to research the decorative arts.It has influenced my art techniques tremendously . Fabulous color plates with good detail .Highly recommend this book.

  2. This book is somewhat misleading in it's title. In many ways "nick knaks of the french interior" might be more accurate. This book has some discussion of French aestetics, and some overall views of interiors, but concentrates on individual items such as furniture, porcelain, clientele and furnishing textiles.

The book has some lovely photographs, but if you are looking for a book full of wonderful photographs of 18th century French aristocratic interiors, then this book is probably not for you. Most of the photos are of the smaller items like nick knaks that make the "feeling" of French interior design.

For an overview of the great interior artists of the bits and pieces that make up french interior design this is good, but it's certinally not a comprehensive guide and in many ways is a dissapointing book.

1 comments about Flanders: The Art of Living.

  1. I was browsing the interior decoration section and came across this book. Misled by the cover, I bought it. It is a coffee table book that shows lots of palaces, mostly exteriors. Not a lot of domestic interior photos, and what there are would not interest someone searching for an interior decoration book.

1 comments about Cool Restaurants Zurich (Cool Restaurants Guides).

  1. It has beautiful photos of restaurants with only the briefest information.
Apparently "cool" restaurants are only so for their interior beauty and not for their culinary delights since this book seems to forget that restaurants serve food.

For each restaurant it tells you:

    1) Owners Name
    2) Chef's Name
    3) Interior/Exterior Designer
    4) Address
    5) Contact Info (phone, web site)
    6) Tram Stop
    7) Hours
    8) Average Price
    9) Cuisine (very vague. For example, just "Fresh market" "French" or "cold Japanese")
    10)Special Features (i.e. "Self Service")

    What's missing
    1) Dining specifics: Menu excerpts, famous dishes. What to try, what to avoid. Any mention of food besides describing it as "French" or "Italian".
    2) Dress Code (casual, formal, nightclub)
    3) Ambiance (i.e. quiet, loud music, lounge, dance club, crowded, sparse)
    4) A single photograph with food in it...seriously

2 comments about Lighting Your Home: Inside and Out.

  1. The book contained a good overview of lighting concepts. However, more specifics such as wattages and distances would have been more practical. Also, the pictues and many of the examples were a bit dated -- all the oversized track lights seemed to be from the 70s.

  2. The book presents an easy way to chose the exact light fixture for every room. In addition, the book illustrates the concept with figures and photos.
