4 comments about Northwest Style.

  1. I liked the book and it was excellent in the areas covered, but it missed the largest part of the US PNW geographic area - the high deserts and dry land conifer forests East of the Cascades in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. As one born and raised in the Northwest, I would really like someone to write a book that acknowledged and showed the styles of architecture and interior design found in places like Pendleton and White Swan.

Most of the PNW is not wet and cloudy, but drier with a harsh and stark beauty that can clearly be seen on the old highway between Ellensburg and Yakima, or cruising between Bend and Madras. Or in the forested places near La Grande and in Northern Idaho. There is the Horse Heaven and Pend Orielle country as well, which have their own forms of architecture that pay tribute to a beautiful and fascinating, and not always kind country.

I wish for a book on PNW style that covers more than the narrow coastal strips and Willamette Valley.

  2. It is obvious Ann Wall Frank loves homes. Her beautifully written text is like poetry, and the photography is stunning. It is a must have for anyone who cherishes making a house a home. The humor, warmth, and intelligence of Ann Frank's writing style sets this book apart from others of its kind. We in the northwest are proud of our style, and Northwest Style captures who we are perfectly. Encore!

  3. Who knew the Pacific Northwest had such an eclectic range of home styles, from Japanese influenced designs to rustic log cabins, to stunning urban lofts. This book is written in an accessible (versus snobby) style, warmed by humor and with an irreverent eye to the iconoclastic bent of the nation's current power center. Beautiful photographs and "real" homeowners--not royalty or billionaires.

  4. This book presents a variety of Northwest homes that defines the lifestyle and architecture of this unique region. Each home is beautifully photographed highlighting the unique architecture and decor. How each home relates to the natural beauty of the region is explored. Ms. Frank narrative personalizes the homes. This a good read. Don't just look at the pictures.

2 comments about Ethnic By Design.

  1. I already own her book, "Ethnic Interiors" and love it. I ordered this book online thinking it would be just as good. But it's actually the exact same book with a different cover. No kidding! I have no idea why she'd release the two books with different covers but identical content, but that's what's happened here. The content is wonderful. I wrote a great Amazon review of for the other book, which I won't repeat here. But I'm terribly disappointed that no one has bothered to mention in the item description that the two books are the same. I guess I'll be passing this book on as a gift.

  2. Beautiful colorful book, full of designs from around the world. Gave me great ideas for my new home.

1 comments about Harry Seidler: Houses 2 (Recent Houses).

  1. Born in Vienna, educated in Canada and at Harvard, protégé to Gropius and Breuer, and an assistant to Niemeyer, Seidler has a classic modernist resume. He traveled to Sydney in 1948 to design a house for his parents, stayed, and has practiced there ever since, playing distinctive variations on those masters of orthogonal and organic geometries. What gives his work its special flavor is its rootedness in the sybaritic, outdoor culture of Australia, which occupies a climatic midpoint between New England and Brazil. At 80, the architect remains a passionate modernist, whose timeless, livable houses are chronicled in these two handsomely illustrated volumes with an introduction by Chris Abel, another talented expatriate. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

3 comments about Cool Hotels (Tools).

  1. This book lacks information. It has virtually none refering to the hotels, just how many rooms and adress, and that's it. If you're looking for a photo book, then it's fine. It has some interesting photos and if you're into interior design you might like it. Not very useful for hotel choosing or anything else. Also some very cool spots are missing, but you expect that in every list.

  2. Sure no pretence on the copy which is non existent, but the most disappointing feature is the fact that the images are weak , and in fact in some cases supplied by the hotels; as a result the book looks certainly more like a collection of bad hotel brochures. Why pay good money for that? Not withstanding the fact that it is doubtful whether the author actually visited the hotels. Not my idea of a useful guide. Obviously it is a commercial attempt to copy Hip Hotels, but frankly not worth it. In future I will just stick to the original...

  3. A beautiful look at an exciting niche. It is a thematic coffee table version of cool new online services such as the great "tablethotels.com" which is much more comprehensive.
