1 comments about Professional Interior Design: a career guide.

  1. Honestly, I was hoping for a more insightful and comprehensive guide to becoming a designer (as the title and description imply). However, this is more like a booklet - very short with very surface-level information. Could be good for a high school student who is curious about what the profession is like, but as an informed career changer, I didn't find anything in this book that I hadn't already read on the ASID website or in other publications. But, like I said, it's a good introduction if you know very little about this field.

5 comments about Mary Emmerling's American Country Cottages.

  1. I bought this book about a month ago for about half the price listed here. The price was right and my viewing the intial fanning of the pages made it a must have.
I was not disappointed and I honestly do look at this book at least once a day. Just when I think I've studied the pages, I take another look to find something new, something else inspirational. The offbeat decorating just doesn't apply to cottages either. Space is space!
I think it's funny that people would criticize a book on tiny spaces for being tiny itself! And it only stands to reason the photos would be smaller (but not invisible!) to accomodate the book.
This charming book is jammed packed and next to my "American Junk", has to be the most looked at/used book I own.
    I highly recommend it.

  2. It's a cute book with some nice photographs. A nicer addition to my collection of Mary's books. It would make a nice gift!

  3. This book wasn't as large and the homes featured in it weren't as fresh and interesting as I had hoped. But I love all aspects of cottage design, from home interiors to exteriors. Thanks to another review, I picked up two other cottage books that do a great job. One is Second Home from the Better Homes and Gardens editors----------I love Second Home because it takes me on tours of cottages around the country while also giving me tips I can use for decorating or even building. It's a great book for just paging through also. Big photos, lots of information but yet it quick to read. I also like The Cabin-----------It's a beautiful book to look at but it doesn't offer the wealth of information that Second Home does.

  4. This book was smaller than I expected. A small book with lots of small pictures. Kind of disappointing. Other books on cottages and second homes do the job getter. I have found these are my favorites:
    * Second Home: Finding Your Place in the Fun. This is comprehensive, large, with great shots of homes in all styles and shots of their settings too. Great to look at but filled with tips on everyting from finding a location to decorating.
    * The Cabin. Gorgeous, big pictures, lots of variety in the cabins shown. Not a lot in the way of information. But pretty.

  5. We bought a small beach cottage and continually look through this book for great ideas.

1 comments about Great Houses of Ireland.

  1. Great Houses of Ireland is a wonderful book for the Irish, architecture, or home design enthusiast. It is filled with lots of great pictures of some of Ireland's most extravagant castles and houses, both inside and out. The book also includes history and interesting facts about these monumental abodes. If you enjoy European architecture, lavishly decorated homes, and lots of beautiful photography, this would be an excellent book to own. It would also make a great coffee table book with it's hard covers and large size.

5 comments about The Victorian Home: The Grandeur and Comforts of the Victorian Era, in Households Past and Present.

  1. This book is loaded with color photographs! I went through this book several times before putting it back down. It's a must have if you are trying to get decorating ideas for a victorian room.

  2. This is a beautiful book to dream by. I bought one because we are building a Victorian home, but this would be enjoyed by anyone who loves Victorian style and design. Lovely!

  3. I could not have decorated my recently renovated 100 year old Victorian home without this book. Friends and family think I have great potential as a decorator, little do they know.

  4. I bought this book about a year ago and I still refer back to it often. The photos are so gorgeous, they give me goosebumps. They transport me into a place I'd like to live, a fantasy of design and genteel composure. The text is informative and the quality of photos is top notch. I highly recommend this book to folks who like Victorian design, both contemporary and traditional. You will feel the money was well spent!

  5. I found this book at a local library, I have went threw several books to get ideas on styles and of the victorian era. I found this one to be one of the best. It has wonderful, all color photographs, has a dictionary of old words and is wonderful for discribing details. I am going to purchase it for my own collection.
