5 comments about Mastering AutoCAD 2000.

  1. Some comments on this book are misleading.
After seeing many five stars comments on
this book, I bought it as a tutorial.
After reading this book and using the
software for several weeks, I had not learned
much. I decided to give up this book.
My friend used this book for learning
AutoCad, she also had to give up.

Later I decided to buy another AutoCad book, called
"AutoCad 2000 - One step at a time", to
    learn AutoCad.

  2. Mastering AutoCAD 2000 Premium Edition is the best AutoCAD book I have come across in my career. It contains enough and practical oriented tutorials with other helpful tips and time saving techniques that can really make you an AutoCAD guru. The accompany CD is superb. I have recommended the book to my friends and students. Kudos to George Omura!

  3. Probably one of the best computer manuals i have read, G. Omura has done a great job. The chapters are very well designed, taking you step by step without rush through the basics of autocad and the platform, then famialarizing you with some basic commands and components supported bt exercises, lateron while you buildup a project you learn more advanced commands and tricks, for me as a beginner i found grasping the material written which was alot very easy. the exercises are very useful, the CD is a great deal containing the mastering autocad 2000 instant reference guide and lots more, the figures are very well showen.
The book could use some "speed" though, some times you feel a bit "still" there is sometimes too much description for things which could seem too much basic. and the chapter on the 3D modeling and design could use some more work, i am planning to buy a specialized book for that purpose.
but all in all i think if i was to choose i would buy this book again.

  4. Like the "Mastering Maya" book, this one gives just the same deep knowledge of the application. Mastering AutoCAD 2000 PE is simply the best book!

  5. I'm sure this is a good book but it was over my head. I am a beginner and I needed a real beginning book. I will keep this book for later when I am more experienced. But I did take the advice of the previous reviewer and purchased "Exercise Workbook for Beginning AutoCAD 2000" by Cheryl Shrock. Now I can handle this one. Not only was it easy to follow, but I emailed the author with questions and she actually emailed me back with answers. Amazing. When I finish the beginning workbook I will probably purchase the "Advanced" workbook also. Then I will return to George Omura's book.

1 comments about Design for Assisted Living: Guidelines for Housing the Physically and Mentally Frail.

  1. This is an amazing book because it includes design considerations that are European and American. Northern Europe has a definite view of the aging population that is very different than that of Americans. Much more focused on wellness, physical activity, landscape as part of healing, maximizing the aging process. This book also includes American facilities that are more focused on creating a HOME for elders. Wonderful photos too. Comment made that senior residences are designed for the daughters (those who make the decision) rather than for the residents. This gives you ideas on how to change that issue... for the positive. Very good resource book.

1 comments about Smart Materials and Technologies in Architecture.

  1. Michelle and Dan - GREAT JOB!!! This book is very insightful on smart/new materials subjects. Because the authors have gone to describe in depth the fundamental characteristics of materials, it really helps the designer to understand how things work at the scale of each materials. I recommend this book for designers/ architects who have interests in smart materials and technologies. NP

4 comments about Learning Mastercam Mill X Step by Step in 2D.

  1. I found this publication an excellent introduction to Mastercam X and the whole concept of 3D Milling. The projects are easy to follow and are easily translated to producing your own projects. I am sure the more advanced sections will become useful as I progress in 3D Milling.
    WELL DONE

  2. Did anyone actually do the problems given in the book? If they did they would have discovered that key strokes are missing and some dimensions are wrong. Awful, don't bother.

  3. The material is worthwhile, but the editors have let down the authors on this text. I found too many errors to be excused. Errors focused on spelling and missing keystroke information.

Come on guys! Spelling errors are inexcusable these days! Key stroke sequence errors should have been fixed in the editing process.

I have worked with AutoCAD for 19 years, and I have been writing CNC programs for 8 years. I was able to deduce the correct keystroke information, but I think this would be a difficult (frustrating) text for the novice.

  4. This book is the best in the industry. There is no other book that can teach you mastercam mill from scratch, trust me i looked. I can't wait till they come out with their lathe version.

5 comments about Mall Maker: Victor Gruen, Architect of an American Dream.

  1. There are only two things to say about this book on Gruen the Mall Maker: 1) The writing must be overlooked, and 2) the substance of the book is crucial to understanding American cities and American culture as we know it today. It made me want to read more about architecture, city planning and economic trends as market forces redesigning neighborhoods, towns, cities and, ultimately, our country. It made me want to go back to school and get a degree in Urban Planning. It made me want to petition the school board to include the study of commerical design and the rise of malls in every high school American history class. It made me want to recommend it to all of my friends who live in cities, love cities, love their malls, live near malls and who shop at malls. The subject matter fascinated me; the writing - not so much so.

  2. This is an excellent book about a single, fascinating individual and about American culture in the twentieth century. There is an irony here: Gruen was very idealistic about the mall's potential to improve society, but he didn't realize that, ultimately, his creation would cause the "malling of America." And he DID build the first mall...the first ENCLOSED mall (rather than an outdoor arcade), which was copied all over the country and is now the dominate type.

  3. Mr. Gruen developed and expanded the concept, but no, he did not originate it - he and the automobile made it more successful and widespread, enriching us all.

1956 the first mall? Er, no, not really: not by a century. Google "Arcade+Providence"

The Arcade Building building by J.C. Bucklin & Russell Warren, 1827-1829

The shopping arcade started here. While not called "shopping mall" the arcades were the start of having multiple shops under a single roof. The shopping mall is the same, with addition of parking and not usually urban but sub-urban or even rural.

  4. My first true mall shopping was done in a Gruen mall, although I was quite unaware at the time of the fascinating story behind this complex man and his vision for America's public spaces.

Thanks to this engaging work by Hardwick, I feel now feel enlightened as I prowl the mall that Gruen built. You don't need to be an architect or a social scientist to enjoy this book because the author makes the subject approachable for the inner shopper in everyone.

  5. A great read and remarkable that no one has written about Gruen before now. if American retail and architecture is your thing, this is a must have. Hardwick captures Gruen in an objective light, in his time, for the reader to judge. can't wait for the next Hardwick bio.
