4 comments about Architectural Detailing: Function - Constructibility - Aesthetics.
- An excellent book for architectural students and young professionals, now made better in the second edition. Expanded with more insight and expertise from Professor Allen augmented by Professor Rand makes it invaluable to readers. A must on every professional's book shelf providing the basic fundamentals and principles of detailing.
- This book is the thinking person's "Graphic Standards" (no slight to that book intended). But in this case, instead of handing you details, it teaches you how to design your own details. It is not only a one-of-a-kind approach but incredibly well-done, well organized, and beautifully illustrated as well. It is a guide to knowing why details should be designed in particular ways. It explains, in depth, what to think about when designing at the level of the detail. And the three case studies in the back of the book are worth their weight in gold. This book truly makes the point that detailing is part of the process of design. Get it, and keep it.
- As much as I like the author's "Building Construction", this book is not recommended. It is based on the premise that many construction details share common principles: shed water by using sloping surfaces, for instance. After a few such groupings are described, it turns into a tips and tricks collection, e.g., do rough work before finish work. It's not a comprehensive reference by any means. On the contrary, it's shamefully padded with many nearly blank pages. Enjoyable reading, nice drawings, just not nearly enough material to justify the price.
- This book is the recipe to designing architectural details. The book is divided into many small but concise sections each dealing with different aspects e.g, controlling water leakage, accommodating movements, providing structural support, forgiving details, etc. In each of these sections various solutions and stategies to deal with these aspects are shown with simple easy to understand diagrams accompanied by a brief explanation. A chapter at the end is dedicated to developing and designing the architectural details through choosing and combining solutions disscussed in the sections with illustrated examples.
This book is the essence to "designing" or merely to "understanding" architectural details. The structure and simplicity of this book makes it almost like a dictionary of architectural details. This book is suitable for students, practicing architects, and those who are interested in the detailing of architecture. Note: in my opinion this book is of a reference nature and not recommended for leisure reading.

2 comments about Folding Architecture: Spatial, Structural And Organization Diagrams.
- perhaps i expected a little too much from this book. but personally i just don't think the content is clear at all. sure they provide you a template of how they cut and score the paper but the models don't look like they have carefully designed. even for this low price it still doesn't justify, since you can find most of the stuff from google anyway.
- this book has helped me wit my architecture work in school. the images are amazing and detailed.

1 comments about Engineering Graphics with AutoCAD 2007.
- As new as I'm new in the word of AutoCad, I can say that this book is not as complex as the software is. It tries to help the student to understand the structure of objects (2D or 3D) but it is not enough. I've seen my classmates struggle because there is not order of importance in the requirements of a drawing; there are not recommendations for the most efficient tools in the making of a drawing. It has worked for me but I don't think it is the ideal text for the new student, bare in mind AutoCad is a huge program and there are tools not even mentioned in this book.
P.D.: Be careful, as always there are typos in the exercises, you may notice them.

- "Essence of Home" is clear and simple, like the designs in the many excellent photos. Provides an excellent framework to help you think through the design of your home.

1 comments about Radical Office Design.
- Having spent most of my working career in the computer business, I spent most of my working career in offices where the main concentration of effort was dull, dull, dull. One mindless cubicle after another.
I picked up this book for the first time when it was lying upside down. The back cover shows an office structure in Los Angeles where the cubicles were truly cubicles - well, actually they were rectangulers. They were made of a stack of shipping containers, 8 foot square, by however long. These things are cheap, strong and available everywhere. I've often thought they should be used for buildings. And inside the book you'll find a description of the building that uses them, providing finished offices at a cost of about $40 a foot.
While this building was in Los Angeles, the book features offices from around the world. This is good, because I've often felt that much of the rest of the world was ahead of us in design efforts.
This is a splendid book that I'd recommend to anyone thinking about building new offices. It is a clear presentation of what can be done, and how advanced design does not have to be expensive.

5 comments about Exercise Workbook for Beginning Autocad 2006: With 30-day Trial Version on Cd-rom (Exercise Workbook for Beginning AutoCAD).
- I went back to College at the age of 62. I am working on my Building Cons-
truction Degree. I was taking two CAD courses. But the book that was being
used was 2 1/2" thick, and weighed 4 lbs. It was extremely hard to follow
and hard to learn even basic commands from. Then I found Auto Cad Pocket
Referance, by Cheryl R. Shrock. I purchased that first, it helped me finish my two CAD courses. I then purchased Auto Cad Begining. I am using
this to hone and keep my Auto Cad skills up to date. I highly recommend
this and all other works by Cheryl R. Shrock. For being easy to use, and
learn from. If you want to learn a complicated process these are the books
to use. Because they make it simple. I give it 100 STARS.
- I GOT AN EXCELLENT SERVICE. THE BOOK ARRIVED ON TIME. PRETTY GOOD SERVICE.
- so i got this book for a class but it is so self-explanitory who needs a teacher!!!!!!!
this book is great and honestly...if u want to learn auto-cad this is the book to get!!!
- It is a book that is well made. The CD helps understand.
- This is one of the best books on AutoCad I have ever used.
I thought Acad was difficult but this book made it so easy.
And it doesn't have a lot of stuff to read. Short and to the point. And it has examples and exercises.
I bought the advanced book also. It is great too.
I suggest this book for anyone new to AutoCAD.
Trust me ....it's not hard after all.
