4 comments about Using Visual Basic with AutoCAD 2000 (Autodesk's Programmer).

  1. I'm sure the books would have been wonderful...if I had received them. So far it's been 5 weeks since they were shipped, lost, and then shipped again. We'll see.

  2. Worthless. None of the things that had baffled me were even mentioned in this book. Many sections refer the reader to "the online help." I have been hacking for twenty five years with no formal education, and learned everything I know from books and hands-on. I learned NOTHING from this book. Don't waste your time.

  3. An absolute must for the AutoCAD user who has never programmed using the Visual Basic for Applications language, and a stepping-stone to advanced programming for those who have automated other applications (like the Microsoft Office products) using VBA. Each chapter is presented as a lesson on a different aspect of automating AutoCAD, complete with lecture and samples of the code involved (provided on a companion CD). It's like taking a college course on the basics of AutoCAD VBA, minus the walk across campus.

  4. Andy Roe has proven he has depth of knowledge in the VBA field but he has also done what few technical authors do - pay attention to the "getting started" user. There's something for both expert and novice in this substantially expanded edition.

4 comments about Harnessing AutoCAD Land Development Desktop Release 2.

  1. I have 14 years of part time 3rd party ACAD apps. It gets the out of the box program configured for use, teaches you basics. The LDD help is not very good for this (i.e I spent 5 hours going down dead ends, looking for menus not loaded etc). The book guides you through set up and creating lines, lots, surfaces, alignments and grading, tied into surveying. It is not a civil engineering text book, hence be prepared to spend a lot of time working on engineering problems to do small things in the program (yes, your bridge may end up 4 inches above the road alignemnt if you are not on your toes). I really wish LDD had engineering tools built in like terra model. Go get an ACAD class if you have the $1500(I do not work for them either), at least buy the coursware for $60 on amazon.

  2. I did not care for the book. I did not feel it was written very well. It does not "read" well and is difficult to understand and follow the examples. I suppose, it is better than nothing and I keep it around as a reference only. Also, hardly and time is spent on the survey module only 1 example is given on runnning traverses.

  3. I have more than five years using third party Acad applications for land development and I found this material systematic, well organized and easy to follow. The examples provided ( CD included) are sequential to the lectures which makes it an excellent didactic tool. On the other hand, the text does not cover the possible, or most common, types of reports that can be generated with the program in its differents applications.

If you are looking for a self-training course in LDD, the price for this book Vs. what you get out of it is worth every penny.

  4. The overall organization is quite good..., however, if you have been using LDD for a while and have accessed the online help to learn the program, you may find much similarity in syntax. If you are new to using LDD, then it is worth the price of the book. Keep in mind though, if you need to pick up the overall working mechanism of this LDD software and civil design in general in a rather short period of time, you best bet may be going to an authorized learning center. (No, I don't work for anyone of them.)

5 comments about Stone Circles: A Modern Builders Guide to the Megalithic Revival.

  1. Any one interested in Stone Circles should read this book! It is just not another coffee table edition. This is an excellent study in circles, their meaning and how they were constructed.

There are detailed accounts of travelling to many stone circles around the world - new and old, with even chapters on how to build a stone circle and the alignments.

An excellent new, fresh look at the stone giants that haunts us today and their relationship with our lives.

  2. I can hardly wait to start laying out my own little "stone henge" and with this book I now know how! I always wondered how they did it, now thanks to Rob Roy, not only do I know how they did it, but now I know how I can do it too! Rob provides history, lore, safety tips, labor saving "secrets" of the ancients, great anecdotes and practical and technical instruction on site selection and preparation, stone selection and preparation, constuction of safe and durable megalithic structures, and even a human and spiritual side of the subject that can be quite energizing. With this book anyone can find their own connection to our ancient ancestors! In addition to all the information provided, this book also harbors some very phenominal photographs of both ancient and modern megalithic structures around the world. If you buy only one book this year, buy this one...if your disapointed then you have no soul!

  3. Rob Roy's book, Stone Circles, is perhaps the most comprehensive and masterful work on the topic of stone circles by a living author today. There is much more to megalithic stone circles than just the movement and placement of massive dormant objects. When properly placed, they become permanent monuments to a timeless spiritual perspective. Considering our fragile and tenuous hold on life, we humans, especially in modern times, would do well to learn about and understand these marvels of engineering, determination, and dedication. Rob Roy's book gives us all a good place to start.

  4. Here's that book on engineering that bridges the gap between the left and right brain. Rob Roy captures you with an engaging writing style that'll accidentally open the secret door to some other very intriguing dimensions. Go for the science -- stay for the spiritual rousing. Well thought out and perfect for any awareness.

Genuine magic. Rock on, Rob -- in every sense.

  5. Years from now, when I'm asked what books impacted my life in major ways, I'm sure I'll immediately list "Stone Circles" as one of them. This is partly because the book came along at a time when I was developing an interest in standing stones and sacred places but mostly because it treats megalithic architecture as a living art: not just a phenomenon from the past to be studied, but a way to connect, as the ancients did, with the earth and with the cycles all around us. This book truly is a "modern builder's guide to the megalithic revival." It speaks of ancient standing stones at Stonehenge, Avebury, the Orkneys, and other sites, but concentrates primarily on contemporary stone circle builders and on practical information for doing this ourselves! It's filled with incredible photos and the stories of contemporary megalithic architects and builders, as well as a wealth of technical information. Thank you, Rob Roy, and thanks to all of your colleagues for lighting a flame in me - before, I had an interest in megalithic architecture, now I am an (amateur) "megalithic anthropologist." That means that I have an interest in the study and application of how human culture and big stones interact - not just in the context of the past, but here and now. I have a small circle of stones on a shelf at home that I rearrange, am going to build some temporary circles at the beach in a couple of weeks, and I can hardly wait to go to work in the back yard this summer! Two thumbs way up for Stone Circles!

5 comments about ObjectARX Primer (Autodesk's Programmer Series).

  1. This book spends less than 70 pages talking about ARX, most of it is dedicated to the history of programming. If your a developer get the Programming ARX book, and get a membership to the AutoCAD's developer network.

  2. This is a great book. I have both of the ObjectARX series from Autodesk press, and although I have read both, this one can really turn the lights on, because it is a concept-driven, rather than code-driven book. In particular, the explanations of derivation from AcDbEntity and the AcGi classes used for entity representation are very well put forth.

You won't find much code here, but great history of how we got here and the concepts for moving forward. Also good explanations of "why" you would want to do things this way.

  3. Good for managers and those who need to understand why custom CAD programming is beneficial.
This book explains how custom programs can help enforce company standards, save time, and cut costs without getting to technical.

It is what I expected. A cursory overview of what the technology has to offer a corporate situation.

You will need a follow up book to write programs with using ObjectARX technology.

  4. I thought it will give me plenty of programming example atleast. Only last chapter is dedicated on very very premitive sample application. For a person like me in third world country, amount I paid is very high against return I got. I have ordered other book. This book should be titled like "Theory of ObjectARX" or something like that. First few chapters deals with principles of Object oriented programming, etc... etc..., which can not become part book titled "ObjectARX Primer". Refering this book, by no means, can help any one to start learning ObjectARX programming or start writing ObjectARX applications.

    I am fairly disappointed.

  5. This is a must for anyone interested in programming Autocad in C++ or those who want to know what all the fuss about C++ and AutoCad is about. My background is engineering and programming Autocad from the Autolisp side. I have delved into C++ to a minimum degree to the point I know the overall concepts. This book is targeted more to those who may not have a thorough knowledge of C++ but do know Autocad to some degree. The areas covered by this book include the why (why one would customize autocad); the history of the customization (Autolisp, ADS, ARX) and finally the pros, cons and hows or ObjectARX programming. This of course is a Primer book and will most likely proceed a title such as "Programming AutoCAD 2000 using ObjectARX". I would recommend this title as a quick immersion into the world of ObjectARX.
