4 comments about Design Standards for Children's Environments.
- Basic book about measures and a few more. Usefull for some technical information if you are designing furniture for the children and to know what sizes are suitable for every age. Also has a usefull list of resources.
You will find it somewhat usefull, but don't expect too much of it.
- This book is a must have resource for architects, landscape architects, and interior designers. The book covers appropriate sizes, heights, and clearances for all ages of children and all types of environments. Anyone designing a school, hospital, or even a playground will benefit greatly by adding this book to his or her library. The information is brought to you in such a cleverly thorough manner that you can tell it is written from the heart, by a mom herself.

3 comments about Elements of Hypermedia Design: Techniques for Navigation and Visualization in Cyberspace.
- I recently got hold of a copy of this book, and I was suprised about its actuality. It came out 6 years ago, but the main lessons are as valid today as they were when the book came out.
Its content is quite original. For example, I have not seen the seven design concepts for navigation in cyberspace elsewhere: linking, searching, sequentialization, hierarchy, similarity, mapping, agents. I found those useful as guiding principles for the design of my own Web sites. I also liked the chapter about algorithm animation, which has been around as a concept for quite some time, but has never really picked up. The writing is somewhat academic in style, but well worth digging in.
- In her excellent book, 'Web Navigation' (O'Reilly), Jennifer Fleming recommended 'Elements of Hypermedia Design' as a good hypermedia resource. So I bought it, thinking perhaps I'd stumbled onto a hidden gem, but sweet mother of pearl, this fellow makes what should be an exciting, vibrant topic as dusty dull as an afternoon in Miss Swingle's grammar class. The author's stilted academic writing made it difficult to extract anything useful from the book. I'm no fan of the 'happy talk' you find in many computer books today, but a bit of conversation, a bit of wit, is always welcome.
I hope another author takes the concepts from this book, writes about them engagingly, and relates them to modern Web development. Now that would be a useful resource.
- As a dissertation this book works well: it contains high level coverage of the theories associated with computer use, and web use in particular, especially descriptions of academic research in that area. Unfortunately it doesn't provide the grounded, current, specific information and examples that would help a commercial practitioner improve web products under development

1 comments about The Essence of Home: Design Solutions for Assisted-Living Housing.
- As someone who has built and manage an ALF and plan on expanding, this book is invaluable. It breaks down the art of architecture as it relates to senior housing and makes suggestions for certain elements that a non architect can easily achieve. A great "how to" book for someone who wants to build a facility. Also, after reading, I'm sure my knowledge base on the subject is better than the vast majority of architects.

5 comments about Pro/ENGINEER Advanced Tutorial (Release 2001).
- I found this tutorial to be the most incomplete and confusing manual I've seen in a long time. It's pretty obvious to me that the text was not proved out by inexperienced users prior to publication nor was it proofed by the author. There is a lot of extraneous verbiage that is not germane to the information presented, as well as sections missing, not enough pictures of the menu structure layout and no index to help find commands. Also very little useful info regarding how to correct mistakes and how to continue a model after quitting out of it in the middle of the entry of information.
- Of the ProE books that I have used I find this one of the most frustrating. I find Toogoods methodology in this book to be fairly limited in its usefulness. The book should not be considered a self-guided tutorial. He has made the dimensioning almost unreadable and completely invisible on some parts. One must search the rest of the book to find the correct dimensions. He also leaves out sections of directions, which may be alright for a class situation, but for someone trying to teach themselves in a professional environment it eats up to much time away from productivity. It is inexcusable that this book was released in this state of being. I also think that Toogood and PTC could at least put indexes in their books. It is almost impossible to find anything quickly. This book is not to good. If PTC does not shape up and correct this type of unprofessional approach it may lose the market share it gained from Autodesk to their new Inventor program. Anyway, enough of my two cents. You would be much better off using Lamit's book. It is more complete and in-depth and it has an index!
- This book does an excellent job of teaching intermediate to advanced techniques. The project parts that are at the end of each chapter do an outstanding job of reinforcing the knowledge gained in the chapter, however the author assumes that you have a pretty good handle on basic techniques. In other words, not everything you need to know to complete the project is in the book, but I know I've learned more by working it out for myself then if this were simply a Pro/E cookbook.
- THIS IS A VERY GOOD BOOK BUT, SOME OF THE EXERCISES ARE LACKING AS FAR AS HAVING READALBE DIMS. I AM CURRENTLY TEACHING A INTRO CLASS WITH THIS BOOK AND SEVERAL PEOPLE IN THE CLASS INCLUDING MY SELF COULD NOT READ SOME OF THE DIMS FOR THE PROJECTS. MAYBE YOU SHOULD ADD A 2D VIEW WITH SOME REAL DIMS ALSO.
- Excellent Book, should be titled, Pro E for dummies. The step-by-step outline makes it full proof.
