5 comments about Luxury Coastal/Mediterranean Style Homes.

  1. Anyone here who says these designs are "cookie cutter" aren't really looking at the interior layouts. The exteriors ARE similar to one another. But, honestly, they are Mediterranean style. How different are they supposed to look.

It's the interiors that are distinguished. The individual touches in the houses gives them their spark. Admittedly, you'll see many of these elements in other houses, but it's how they're put together that makes a house great.

Use your imagination and walk through the house. They're homey and yet elegant. A difficult combination to pull off.

  2. Sater II has some of the most elegant designs I have ever seen. I love the way he combines the out doors with the indoors with extensive use of the veranda and varied use of all different types of ceilings. His Fiorentino and Prestonwood plans are masterpieces of elegant and stately designs. The only fault I see is that I wish his foyers were larger and more isolated from the living room like Frank Lloyd Wright's and his designs are somewhat cookie cutter.

  3. The reviewer who has called this book "cookie cutter" suffers from delusion. The homes in this book are some of the most unique designs I have found anywhere, and the photography does a great job of showing this.

As far as I can tell, the designer of the homes in this book has probably allowed the Homeplanners magazines to reproduce his designs with the hope of exposing more potential customers to his work.

I suppose the writer of this review would accuse her local newspaper of plagiarism if a column by one of their writers appeared in USA Today or the New York Times.

  4. I purchased this book thinking it would offer a variety of styles and details. What I found was a run of the mill Florida cookie cutter style (neither mediterranean, nor Spanish, nor Italian, nor classic), the kind you find at just about every cookie cutter development in the Southwest and Florida. Even more disappointing, however, was the fact that I found the exact same plans, illustrations, and photos found in several home plans magazines, particularly those by Home Planners, inc.

Overall, the book was short on substance and detail, and the plans were so convoluted, I felt I had opened a puzzle book instead of an architecture/design book.

  5. This book has some of the most beautiful homes I've ever seen! The photography is stunning and the interiors are extremely well detailed. More importantly the floor plan designs themselves are well thought out and give a unique livability to it's occupants. This is a great source for truly one of a kind luxury home designs!

5 comments about VHDL: Analysis and Modeling of Digital Systems.

  1. This book is an excellent book for beginners to VHDL. It is written in such a way that it presents the development and nuances of the VHDL language sequentially and ties some of the history of the language into the examples. It is very useful when you want to know why the syntax works the way it does. My only criticism is that it can be difficult to find examples when using it as a desk reference. I often found myself thinking, "I remember reading how to do this, but I can't seem to find it now." I would highly recommend this book if you can dedicate the time to read it cover-to-cover as it makes things easier to find when you need them.

Even though I've been writing VHDL in industry for 10 years now, I learned a lot by reading this book. I think there are other books, "A VHDL Synthesis Primer" by Bhasker that are more compact design references, but this book is a must have for comprehensive language coverage and some of the more powerful concepts that often aren't covered by other references. It is also an invaluable tool if you plan on doing any test bench development or complex modeling (i.e. transistor, or gate level logic simulation).

In summary, I would highly recommend this book. If you can dedicate the time to read it cover-to-cover it will help you become a better VHDL coder.

  2. I recently used this text for a design class using VHDL. The text is easy to read, has a good flow from topic to topic, and contains many useful examples that help explain the issues.

  3. I recently used this book for a class and found the book had a lot of detail and was easy to read. There were lots of examples to demonstrate different concepts of VHDL that were easy to understand. The only complaint is the index seems to be bit sparse and can be hard to find specific concepts.

  4. I knew nothing about VHDL before reading this book. Now I know how to design a small CPU.
This book is very practical for those who just start to learn VHDL. Different from many VHDL books, which just provide general command statement explaination, this book combined the language with very detailed and useful examples.
Moreover, it focuses more on system design rather than VHDL language. The book starts with designing small components such as counter, adder, ends with a complete CPU. After reading this book, I have got a better concept about the timing and architecture of the system.
So in a word, a good book.

  5. I usually never get far along through my college textbooks, but I found this one very interesting. It provides a good overview of the VHDL programming language, going into detail on many of the more confusing aspects, such as multiple driver resolution.
As a programming language, I wasn't particularly fond of the way VHDL handled many issues. The concept of configurations seemed unnecessary, and I didn't like how it automatically dropped so many assignments to a signal. Coming from an object-oriented programming background, I think I might have preferred Verilog, which Prof. Navabi also teaches a course in, actually.

1 comments about Getting There by Design, An architect's guide to project and design management.

  1. Allinson covers the bases on project management from the perspective of the creative side of the brain. This isn't a "create a WBS following these rules and get an M&M" style book. You will have to think to use the information but it is well worth while. If you are a creative type working in a project managed environment, this is a very good book. The references and his descriptions are very useful.

1 comments about Photographic Perspective Drawing Techniques.

  1. Of all the books out there, and there are multitudes which purportedly teach the inquiring designer, architect and artist how to sculpt shape in two dimensions with the appearance of three dimensions with their own hands - this is truly the only book that delivers .......... on the basics of technique through the subtlties of style and nuance. There is no computer software that can replace the human response to the hand drawn line, and Mr. Leach is a master teacher who leads the student through a most deceptively thorough training session which leaves no frustrating blanks in the process. It is such a shame this book is out of print now as well as the first one, for they are both treasures for the artist in all two dimensional media.

1 comments about Van Nostrand Reinhold manual of rendering with pen and ink (Van Nostrand Reinhold manuals).

  1. "'Rendering' is the reproduction or representation of an architect's design in the form of a drawing of the building as it will appear, complete with accessory details such as trees, traffic and people. It is also much used in preparing drawings for engineers, designers and manufacturers, and in advertising and industry generally. Mr. Gill has produced a concise, thorough and copiously illustrated guide to techniques and methods, including sections on perspective, projection, shadow, reflections, and on how to draw cars, ships, aircraft, trees, human figures and so on."
