3 comments about Spectacular Homes of the Pacific Northwe (Spectacular Homes).

  1. I was extremely disappointed by this book, and I'd like to warn potential buyers.
    1. This book is only about interior design.
Do not expect a single exterior image. When I read the title, I thought I was going to see a good selection of images portraying 'spectacular' homes inside and out. But you only get very few shots of some of the main rooms.
    2. These homes are not spectacular.
At best, they're average. Unless, of course, you're a big fan of froufrou design, overdone decoration, fake antiques, ribbons, lace and bows, factory made nostalgic gesso decorations and so forth. The designers represented in this book are not aware that we live in the Twenty First Century.
    3. The book is a promotional brochure for interior designers.
Every project comes with a complete presentation of the author of the interior design, including details about how they most like to spend their money (?!?). It makes me think that probably these designers paid the publishing house to each have one project published (what a coincidence, exactly one each).
Overall, the quality of the designs is disappointing. This book is not at all what it pretends to be. Not even the inside flaps reveal what this book really is, or that it is only about interior design.
Anyone interested in good quality architecture and design, beware!

  2. I guess there are people who find these homes spectacular, but I'm not one of them. Except for Melody Emerick's work in Oregon, these homes scream, "Designer's been here". These homes look so over-designed. Do people really want to live like this? Obviously, I don't get it.

Of all the zillions of interior design books and magazines I've looked at, this book is one of the most uninteresting and uninspiring. And I live in the Oregon. One would think I would appreciate and value this book. Maybe this book is for traditional, conservative people and I live in a progressive realm...

  3. Each designer is showcased beautifully. It's a great coffee table book.
And don't we wish we all could have homes like those shown? But, we can get ideas!

1 comments about Aldo Rossi: The Sketchbooks 1990-97.

  1. What better book to show an architecture student, design student, or even professional designer the virtues and power of the hand? This is a small and compelling book that does not explore, but states clearly the relevance of drawing in Rossi's design process. Though the format of the book is small, the reproductions of Rossi's works are large enough and of high enough quality that we can clearly follow the craft and intuition of the initial responses and investigations of particular design problems. Rossi's drawings are intuitive, playful, and always based solidly in the knowledge of the fundimentals of orthographic, perspective, and axonometric design drawing as well as the subjectivity of gesture. In his drawings, the process, not the product, is paramount. For an instructor of design or drawing, they are wonderful for student analysis. By dismantling and revealing the underlying structures of the visual language that Rossi employs, students and designers alike will be inspired to return to paper in a much more rigorous way to explore the moments between thought and expression that perhaps only drawing can afford. Whether you are a fan of Rossi or not, this book is a great addition to a personal or school library.

1 comments about Mastering AutoCAD.

  1. This book was very well thought out . It is graphic, easy to understand, and the author does not talk down to the reader. His sketches and command lines were explained in full detail. The only thing this book lacks, is a hard cover...because of it's use, we have worn out the soft cover

1 comments about Mechanical Design Modeling Using Pro/Engineer.

  1. This is one of the best books that I have ever seen on Pro/E. The chapters are very well-organized with easy to follow directions . For each concept, there are numerous examples with step by step instructions.

The book would be ideal for both beginners who are trying to explore Pro/E, as well as advanced users who are trying to make the best use of Engineering Design using Pro/E.

2 comments about Fieldbuses For Process Control: Engineering, Operation And Maintenance.

  2. For years I've listened to talk about the wonders of fieldbus. Claims for this technology ranged from "less wire and maintenance" to "world peace and prosperity"! It's now such a relief to have an unbiased book that explains in simple terms some of the most common fieldbus technologies. Hopefully, this information, combined with the growing availability of fieldbus products, will make it possible for me to improve the control system in my plant.
