5 comments about Mastering Autodesk Architectural Desktop.
- I took an Autocad class and learned the basics of the program. This book helped my knowledge to grow beyoond the basics and helped me to use the 3d portion of the program. It is a great resource!
- I have worked with previous AutoCad versions along with Desktop 3.3 and this book made the transition from those programs to Desktop 2005 a lot easier. 2005 has so many shortcuts and components and this book gives step-by-step examples that really speed up the process. I recommend this book to anyone who is advancing to the new Desktop 2005 software.
- If you're an architect that already knows AutoCAD well, this is a good book to transition into ADT. It covers the basic structure of ADT and setting up projects in step by step tutorials for both residential and commercial projects.
I also like the fact that this book is more about principals and concepts than commands and has a lot of tips for CAD managers. However, the tutorials are great for learning ADT and it's perfect for both users and CAD/Project managers.
Aubin knows his stuff!
- This book only scratches the surface of mastering ADT 2005. However, it was a great book for getting over the beginning humps of ADT.
- Paul's new book has something for everyone.
It is a great resource for the new user with broad ranging self-paced tutorials.
Experienced ADT users will appreciate the "New in ADT 2005" icons to quickly pick up new features and improvements such as those found in the Callouts, Keynotes, and Details.
CAD Manager notes offer practical advice for those resposible for establishing their company's standards.
Good job Paul!

4 comments about Living Homes: Sustainable Architecture and Design.
- This book offers a good introduction into building with earth, straw and recycled materials. There are lots of nice photos with a brief story telling how and why the builders used the chosen materials.
This book does not go into depth on how to make a home out of straw bale, adobe, rammed earth or any other techniques. There are lots of other good books that do though. I am kind of disappointed in a couple of the things the author says that are a bit misleading or untrue, probably unintentionally, but non the less they are there and you will not pick them out unless you are well read on alternative building techniques.
- Finally! A book on sustainable architecture that shows quality buildings designed by Architects. All too often, these books show buildings that are not well designed, and detailed, and the quality of construction is lacking. I was very pleased to see well known architects, as well as lesser known architects' work detailed in this beautiful book. This book is wonderful to look at and it also has excellent, well written descriptions of each project.
It's a great read, and it is now in my personal library. I also bought one for the office.
- In the course of designing our new house, my family and I were looking for inspiration. This book gave us plenty of ideas and opened up new possibilities as to materials we could use that would be kinder to the environment that traditionally built homes.
The photographs are beautiful, and it was interesting to read what each of the book's homeowners had to say about constructing their houses. I had always thought that homes built of rammed earth or bales of straw were boring-looking, but this book proves the materials can be used to make great-looking houses.
- I received this much-anticipated book today. True to description, it contains beautiful photos (one page was misprinted with a wide pink streak across the photo) and text from architects, owners, etc. What it doesn't have much of is anything more than brief or shallow explanations of HOW sustainable living takes place -- minimal floor plans (meaning only for a few of the homes reviewed.
For one clear example, Lake/Flato architects built a truly innovative vacation house, with the living area surrounded - wrapped really - in the bedrooms and bathrooms of the house. Only a floor plan can reveal their creative arrangement of the rooms. The house is featured in this book, but no indication of the remarkable new layout - maximum living in minimal space. (Look for the Contemporary Architecture series for Lake/Flato architects for more information.) Broad but shallow is a good summary for this pretty, but not nearly as informative as I had hoped, book.

3 comments about A Tutorial Guide to Autocad Release 14.
- I adopted this book for my AutoCAD course this year, and the results have been notable. Students take to the tutorial approach very well, and the Lockhart tutorials are nicely done.
However, assigning homeworks out of this book is somewhat difficult, as there are quite a few exercises with missing dimensions and geometry errors. We've had to adjust on the fly and hand out some supplements. All in all a good book. I would hope Ms. Lockhart updates this format for ACAD 2000... and proofreads the exercises!
- I have used this, and previous editions in my AutoCAD classes. Unfortunately, I have to switch texts because Lockhart has not updated this book for release 2000.
The presentation is a bit weak in the area of drawing using surveyor measure, and ISOMETRIC drawing is omitted entirely. I use supplemental material for this. Many assignments have minor errors, and the chapter does not always proprly cover how to do the assignment. However, the sample problems are quite good and should interest the student. This book is well organized and takes the reader from the very beginning through 3-D drawing. Presentation style is easy to read, and the size of the book is nice to handle.
- My AutoCAD class is currently using this book as our textbook for the course. Being a beginning AutoCAD student, even at age 59, I find this book to be easy to use and understand. The downloadable templates that are provided with the textbook are superb.
