3 comments about Using CATIA V5.

  1. Making the switch over to V5 is a real pain, especially if you're a busy v4 engineer. Honestly, the best thing is to watch a few v5 video tutorials every day so you don't have to go thru the agony of a book. There's a beginner tutorial that I found helpful. Regardless, this book is task-based and spends a helpful bit of time talking about "making the transition." It will give a beginner an overview of the workbenches, so I'd say it's a good starting point. Here's that video tutorial link - CATIA V5 Video Tutorial CD ROM- Quickstart

  2. My company is currently working on a major project with the author's company. My department is transitioning over to CATIA V5 from a different design software and we are using this book as our training manual. The graphics are good.

  3. Readers of this book will not be prepared to use Catia in a professional environment. Mr. Karam lacks practical knowledge of his subject, and relies on his co-author to write the majority of this work. Mr. Karam has been using a rival CAD program for over a decade, and is a Catia beginner himself. Those looking to learn Catia are better served elsewhere.

1 comments about Ancient Mexican Designs/ Disenos Mexicanos Antiguos (Agile Rabbit Editions).

  1. This edition reproduces ancient Mexica glyphs and codex illustrations at higher quality than other resource books I've owned for many years. As much as I love and appreciate the Dover resource books that come with CD-ROMs, the images on their CDs tend to be low quality, with extensive "jaggies" that require extensive correction before being used for digital texturing or Web design. The images on the CD-ROM accompanying this fine book are much higer resolution and will require fewer "corrections" before use in digital art applications, this buyer's intended purpose.

Even if you're not a digital artist, this book serves as a fascinating overview of Mexica aesthetics. It's a real pleasure just to view and learn from.

5 comments about Make Your Website Work for You: How to Convert Online Content Into Profits.

  1. This book has some key elements that can be used by alot of sites small and large. Although it may be a bit dated, it goes over elements that people are just learning how to use now. Developing microsites rather than web sites, avoiding banner ads, creating email campaigns, and building an online brand. It's a solid book with applicable elements if you know how to apply them to today's web.

  2. I read through other peoples reviews here at Amazon.com and bought this book. But it did not meet expectations at all. If you are a first time net users or are planning to wet your feet in the internet space then may be this book makes sense. But, if you already know the basics and are looking for depth of knowledge, strategic thinking and effective implementation tools for good content management...this is NOT the book. The author probably worked for an ad agency when ad agencies did ' business stategy work'.... I strongly recommend Killer Content by Mai-lan Tomsen instead.

  3. This is a great book that follows the classic rules of brand marketing and updates them for the new medium. It takes a step by step approach to planning, creating, and implementing an effective online advertising campaign. As the author notes, brand driven, bottom line oriented. After all, how can you go wrong with an intro by Leo Burnett!

  4. The book works for business owners of all size. It lays the groundwork for the creation of workable marketing programs which can then be tweeked for each opportunity. Since I have yet to work in a business where everything deal is the same, it works perfectly.

I do like the way the author has sectioned out the book. I have a great deal of brand building and advertising experience, so I could skip to the area I was interested in without having to re-hash what I already know.

In all, a very good book that provides real information for the real world and examples of people who have already done it. Now, the more time I spend on the net, the more I see Mr. Cannon's ideas being used.

    Well done...

  5. A great book that walks you through internet marketing in plain english and in ways that are easy to follow and even better, easy to implement. It's definately not a technical book, it's a great book designed for marketing and sales people.

5 comments about Inside CATIA.

  1. This book is VERY elementary. Only suitable for beginners, not for those with any experience. Lots of functions missing.

  2. This books barely covers the basics of the now old V4 version. It does a just average review in a non-detailed manner of a handful of commands. It doesn't begin to cover what you'd expect in a book that costs [$$] dollars. None of the pictures are color either. My CD was cracked but the models described in the book are so basic why would you want to use it? You can teach yourself with the CD help that ships with CATIA better than use this books. It merely shows a little something about the program.
Take my advice. Don't buy this book! If I didn't care I wouldn't write this review.

  3. good but not for a advaced student more like an intro to book

  4. I bought this book becourse I read "Inside Solidworks" from David Murray which i liked a lot.

This book was not what I expected. The backcover says: beginner:yes, intermediate:yes, advanced:yes. To my opinion it only provides beginners information. But for a beginner it may be hard to understand in the way it's given.

A lot of pages only cover tables with descriptions of commands accompanied with a half-page-high screenshot of Catia (version 4.1.6? for unix?) for those commands. The examples are very basic with no "inside"-tricks or tips.

I am pretty new to Catia so it's hard to judge what the difference is between unix-Catia4.1.6 and the current windows-Catia5.4 but if i look in the book and on the screen the book looks very outdated.

This book reminded me of some books a read about autocad 9 or 10 years ago. Nowadays I think u may expect more then a summary of commands and poor examples from a not so cheap book.

  5. Very detailed book about a very complex CAD program. I was very disappointed with the way the index was done. For instance, if I wanted to know how to ROTATE some geometry, there is nothing in the index that refers me to the correct command, which is TRANSFORM. The same applies to COPY. The index should refer the reader to the correct command based on a description of the action that you want to apply. Another example would be if I wanted to MOVE some text, geometry, etc. There should be a MOVE entry in the index that refers me to the command that moves whatever it is I'm trying to move. CATIA's menu structure is very convoluted. Not being able to look in the index for what should be basic commands in any other CAD program was extremely frustrating and time consuming. Unfortunately, the choices are few as far as CATIA guides are concerned. This book is a fair attempt at simplifying a very complex CAD program.
