3 comments about Inside Design Now: National Design Triennial.
- This was an excellent book fill with great ideas and interesting concepts.
this is a most have
- The catalogue for the National Design Triennal at the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum is an elegant distillation for those who cannot make it to New York before January 25, and includes essays by its four curators. The theme, in every aspect of design, from furniture to graphics, lighting to fashion, is pluralism. Standouts include Yusuke Obuchi's Wave Garden-a poetic alternate energy generator that rewards frugal consumers by becoming a maritime park at weekends; Loyand Ford's deconstructed clothes; and Stephen Wolfram's graphic portrayal of simplicity generating complexity-an inquiry that might, one day, summarize the workings of the universe in a few lines of code. Get the book and try to see the exhibition: both will stretch your mind and broaden your appreciation of what designers can do. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)
- If you can't make it to New York to see the actual Triennial show at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, then this book is your best bet for a provocative survey of contemporary design. This is particularly true if you think of design as a big idea connecting print, interaction, motion, products, architecture and environments. You'll find a good balance of critical writing with images in this book. So it is something both to look at and to read and think about.

2 comments about Solid Modeling Using SolidWorks 2004: A DVD Introduction.
- The book is good, but the DVD tends to be more useful when looking for options and tools. The DVD must be played with the supplied player on the DVD, and this may be hard to find if you don't look for it and the autorun does not load. Normal DVD programs cannot play the DVD content of the disk.
- Not the best text book I've used.
DVD does not appear to work, having tried three different working DVD drives and players. Package seal (probably illegally) says once broken that you foreit all return rights.
The book is based around tutorials, a lot of space is devoted to listing what you will be doing and the "course" structure. Once past the initial, and confusing parts, the rather basic illustrations do give you a reasonably structured introduction to using the application, and solid modelling.
Perhaps OK for students, but does seem rather expensive, considering the DVD apparently does not work in the UK.

1 comments about Hand-Drawn Worlds.
- I loved this book. It has a very diverse collection of works by some of the most talented architects working today. I was particularly inspired by the works of Lebbeus Woods, Corvin Matei and Zaha Hadid. In today's technologically focused world, it is endearing to see such beautiful drawings drawn by hand.

1 comments about Aldo Rossi: The Sketchbooks 1990-97.
- What better book to show an architecture student, design student, or even professional designer the virtues and power of the hand? This is a small and compelling book that does not explore, but states clearly the relevance of drawing in Rossi's design process. Though the format of the book is small, the reproductions of Rossi's works are large enough and of high enough quality that we can clearly follow the craft and intuition of the initial responses and investigations of particular design problems. Rossi's drawings are intuitive, playful, and always based solidly in the knowledge of the fundimentals of orthographic, perspective, and axonometric design drawing as well as the subjectivity of gesture. In his drawings, the process, not the product, is paramount. For an instructor of design or drawing, they are wonderful for student analysis. By dismantling and revealing the underlying structures of the visual language that Rossi employs, students and designers alike will be inspired to return to paper in a much more rigorous way to explore the moments between thought and expression that perhaps only drawing can afford. Whether you are a fan of Rossi or not, this book is a great addition to a personal or school library.
