3 comments about Insider's Paris: An Intimate Tour.

  1. Who wouldn't be tempted to peek into the window of an incredibly chic Parisian maison? Here's your chance. How did the editors convince these fabulous homeowners to open their doors and even some of their receipe files?

  2. This is another book on Paris design in the same style as previous Elle Decor publications like "Elle Decor, the grand book of French design", and "The best of Elle Decor". With only a few exceptions, this book has many new pictures that haven't been published before(at least in American magazines). There are a few Christian Liaigre wanna be interiors, but very very few. Only Christian Liaigre seems to be able to pull off that style, so go purchase "Maison Christian Liaigre" if you love his work. The book devides Paris into various neighborhoods, and has a great suppliment in the back that gives you shopping, hotel, restaurants, museums, antiques, etc., for various sections of Paris. Although the French style is not always applicable to American architecture, design, and way of life, there are many beautiful and inspiring images thoughout.

  3. There are many gorgeous photos of both the insides and outsides of public and personal spaces. I was actually surprised at the number of homes we get a peek into. If you enjoy interior design, of just about any style, you will find it here. I love all the personal libraries shown, crammed with books and interesting objects. Loved the mannequins, esp the life-sized guy sitting on the couch. I am a fan of exotic, eclectic decorating and found many examples to keep me happy with the book.

1 comments about Freitag: Individual Recycled Freeway Bags.

  1. Far more than one of those thick books with modern layout and strangely-cropped images (which is what it appears to be on first glance). This book is a great read (even though there is only text on 1 out of 5 pages) and documents in photographs and words how the Freitag bag was developed, adopted by the masses, and used. If you want to see a product and design philosphy that is beyond "green", this is a good place to start. Smart, very smart.

2 comments about Design Dimensioning And Tolerancing: Study Guide.

  1. Bruce Wilson has developed a volume which explains the ASME Y14.5M-1994 drawing standards in a more accessible format. This book is an ideal companion to the official drawing standards, or if you don't want to shell out a hundred bucks for the ASME book.

Extensive examples and a well-formed index also contribute to the effectiveness of this work. My only complaint is that the entire book is slanted toward machined parts, so people who work a lot with plastics or complex-surface parts may find themselves wondering how to apply certain dimensions.

  2. GD&T is thoroughly explained in easy to understand terms. Explanations build from simple applications to those that require extension of the principles currently defined by the national standard. All material is in agreement with the current national standard, ASME Y14.5M-1994. Design dimensioning and Tolerancing is written such that it will be a good resource for engineering, manufacturing, and quality assurance organizations. Exercises contained at the end of each chapter make it useful for classroom use. The study guide and solutions manual are helpful for the classroom or self-study.

1 comments about Dolls' houses (Architectural design profile).

  1. Unable to find a suitably interesting dollhouse for his daughter, the editor of Architectural Design magazine launched a worldwide design contest. The results are depicted in this book, which still fascinates me after 22 years. Each completed entry is shown in a black and white or color photograph, along with the original sketches and plans, and architect's statement of intent. It's absorbing on several levels - the creativity put into the design, the modeling techniques, and the dollhouses themselves - what would they be like to play with? How much did children enjoy them? The winning entry was one I have never forgotten since purchasing the book in the 80s: a golden tower which children could actually enter and climb up the stairs. While the drawings are not meant to provide building instructions for hobbyists, they might inspire at-home construction efforts. The designs themselves surprisingly don't look dated, even though 22 years have passed. It's too bad that such a competition hasn't been held since, though.

2 comments about Palaces of the Sun King: Versailles, Trianon, Marly--The Chateaux of Louis XIV.

  1. This book is a huge disappointment. When i picked it up at border's i assumed at that price it would be spectacular..it is not..it's an odd book with usual images and hard to follow text. I had wanted to see the book because you rarely hear anything about Marly, the kings favorite palace, if Louis liked you, he would invite you to Marly, it was spectacular and you do get a feel for it in this book, but not enough to pay this staggering price. It's a mediocre book, with a shocking sticker price...just buy the Montclos book on Versailles, now that's a GREAT book and well worth it's price.

  2. This book covers many structures, commissioned by Louis XIV, that were either built or were designed but not executed. The pictures that the authors did themselves are spetacular! The text is also above average. I however must warn you it is not worth $135.00 which is the book's retail price. The book's length was a huge dissapointment. It is only 208 pages (not 224 as they say in the book description) which includes the table of contents, index, bibliography, etc. The authors did not fill the pages with as many illustrations and text as I would've liked. If I had it to do over again would not pay the retail price for this book. I would buy a used one instead. Overall though, despite its length, the book does provide the reader with an in-depth look at the exquisite architecture of the Sun King.
