1 comments about Mario Botta: Architectural Poetics (Universe Architecture Series).

  1. Architects transcribe their thoughts and emotions through their designs, forms, and spaces. Botta is without a doubt
a master in his own right.
But what compelled me to write this review is the "text", the writing. The author of the book is a practicing architect who has worked along side Botta. She seems to really understand what lies at the heart of architecture in General and Botta's design philosophy in particular.
If you are a student of architecture READ this book.
If you love to contemplate beautiful creations READ this book. And finally if you are a fan of good writing I urge you to read this book!

1 comments about 8vo: On the outside.

  1. This is a really interesting book that breaks the common mould of graphic design career reviews. The usual "slide show" of finished posters/books/etc is shunned in favour of a deeper look at the thought process & physical development behind selected work.

The book is by Mark Holt & Hamish Muir -the principals in 8vo from around the time of its inception in the early 80s until its eventual closure in 2000. In this time they most notably worked for Factory Records, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, "Flux" music festival & Holt Hinshaw Pfau on very open, unconstrained briefs to design posters & other printed material. On these "creative" (as some would have it) briefs, they applied their own interpretation of rational "international style" - resulting in some of the best graphics of the era. However, the more interesting aspects of this book are their application of grid systems & rational design process to more everyday items - such as phone & water bills.

The book openly shares their exploration of intellectual & physical process behind a form of graphic design that shied away from using images, and through that mechanism, the reader is introduced not only to how they produced graphics - but what "design" meant to them. When everything in the late 1980s was "designer", 8vo described themselves as "visual engineers" rather than "designers". With this exploration, the reader should come away with an appreciation of the process behind credit card bills as much as an appreciation of the aesthetics of a good type-based poster.

The book is dimensionally small, but does come in at over 500 pages. It is very well designed & features 5 essays from esteemed designers. If you are looking for a glossy career retrospective - this isn't your book. If you are looking for a fantastic insight into the process behind great design, then it is!

1 comments about Modeling Messages: The Architect and the Model.

  1. As long as there have been architects, they have been using models to help design buildings, sell projects and instruct builders. "Modeling Messages" is a comprehensive study of the many facets architectural model making. Karen Moon starts by examing the history of the architectural model from the Renaissance to the early Twenty First Century. She moves on to such varied topics as the relationship between architect and model maker, architectural model as fine art and the changing role of high technology in the modeling process.

If you are looking for a text book on how to build architectural models, this book is not for you. However, if you want to learn more about the model builder's craft and see some beautifully photographed models, this book is a must purchase. "Modeling Messages" is a high quality art book and it is one of those books that I will be reading for pleasure for many years to come. Highly recommended.

5 comments about Using Autodesk Inventor.

  1. This book is absolute garbage!
The whole book is a tutorial with a lot of example problems for the user to solve. That's great!! The problem is when they LEAVE OUT very important measurements for you to complete the examples. So I've spent hours and hours working on one and now I can't finish it because they've FAILED to inlcude some very key data. Good job Thomson Learning!! You've successfully pushed yet another incomplete book out the door without so much as a decent proof read. Unbelieveable!!

  2. I decided to purchase this book largely based on the positive reviews that I saw on Amazon. The ugly and generic cover kind of turned me off but everybody said it was great so I went ahead bought it.

    Boy was I disappointed.

The fact that they obviously just slapped on "Inventor 10" to their Inventor 9(or lower) book stands out a lot. Many of the tool bars have changed/rearranged so it takes some looking around to go through the tutorials. Yes it may only cost me a few minutes for each time I have to do this, but if I'm shelling out ~$100 for a book it would have been nicer to know they put more of an effort in updating it other than finding and replacing "Inventor 9" with "Inventor 10".

They don't even go over Inventor Studio, which is a very large addition and selling point of Inventor 10+!

Other then those obvious translation issues it is a very solid book, and if I was using this for the correct version it was originally written for I would have been very very happy.

In the end this may have been a great book for whatever original version it was written for, but just slapping on "Inventor 10" and sticking a $100 price tag on the book isn't my idea of a great book.

Do yourself a favor, buy a book catered toward this specific version or newer. Or just buy the Inventor 9 book @ 50% of what this costs, it's the same stuff! ><

  3. I plan to use "Autodesk Inventor" as an instructional textbook in my Advanced CAD Class during the 2001-2002 school year. I have been exploring the material in this text during my free time (during this summer of 2001). I feel that the upper level high school students using this text will not only be able to construct the 3-D models detailed in this book but will enjoy learning the use of the Autodesk Inventor software.

I wish to thank Mr. Ron K. C. Cheng for writing this book. My hat is off to you. Although the "Food Grinder" took a good deal of time and patience on my part (to work through), it was a great exercise.

I highly recommend this book for any educator who wishes to instruct 3-D modeling with the use of AutoDesk Inventor.

  4. As a student in industrial design I found that this book do has a good balance on both concepts and tutorials, especially on all those parametric solid modeling, assembly modeling, and sheet metal modeling. The free-of-charge online companion is the best I ever found. It's free and it's user friendly. The Pack and Go, epicyclic mechanism and adaptive assembly tutorials are especially interesting and useful. They help me solve a lot of real world problems when I am doing my part time job. I recommend to save your money and use this book for both R3 and R4.

  5. The specific question on ZIP can be found in Chapter 1 of the online companion. It is the Pack and Go Wizard that zips the entire directory into a compressed file. Besides, the R4 new features and tutorials on the new features are also found in the online companion, which has six chapters corresponding to the chapters in the book.

2 comments about Design Methods (Architecture).

  1. Every designer should have a copy of this book.

slightly dated now - but still the classic guide to design process.

My copy keeps getting stolen - going to have to buy a new copy.

  2. Design Methods: seeds of human futures By John Chris Jones 1970,1980,1992

Architects, confronted in the 1950s and 1960s with design efforts involving many designers and many stakeholders, were forced to study their methods to make them more open to scrutiny and input at all stages. By the time "Design Methods" was published in 1970, architects, engineers, and industrial designers had begun to raise their perspective to include a much larger picture, ranging from the designer's internal processes all the way to planetary conditions. As a society, we were re-designing design. Many of the design methods which Jones presents in his "recipe book" grew from this design group work. Even today, best practice for design teams is largely developed from methods described almost thirty years ago in this book.

    From the Introduction:

"Jones first became involved with design methods while working as an industrial designer for a manufacturer of large electrical products in Britain in the 1950s. He was frustrated with the superficiality of industrial design at the time and had become involved with ergonomics. When the results of his ergonomic studies of user behavior were not utilized by the firm's designers, Jones set about studying the design process being used by the engineers. To his surprise, and to theirs, Jones' analysis showed that the engineers had no way of incorporating rationally arrived at data early on in the design process when it was most needed. Jones then set to work redesigning the engineer's design process itself so that intuition and rationality could co-exist, rather than one excluding the other."

This cooperation of multiple faculties seems to be a consistent thread throughout his work.

"Design Methods" is divided into two parts.

Part one gives a brief history of design, argues that new methods are needed for today's more complex realities, breaks down the design process into three stages, and shows us how to choose a design method for each stage. The 1992 edition has added several prefaces which are well worth reading. They help explain how to use the book.

Part two consists of descriptive outlines, or recipes, for 35 design methods. These methods include: logical, data gathering, innovative, taxonomic, and evaluative procedures. Reading part one gives you a grasp of the book. After that, the methods in part two are best read singly or a few at a time, as you would any recipe book.

    * * * * *

Jones breaks design down into three stages: 1) Divergence, 2) Transformation, and 3) Convergence.

The divergence stage is ".. extending the boundary of a design situation .. to have a large enough, and fruitful enough, search space... The objectives, and the problem boundary, are unstable and tentative. Evaluation is deferred. Every effort is made to escape old assumptions, and absorb new data."

The territory of the problem is tested to discover limits, consequences, and paradoxes. The questions are: What is valuable? What is feasible? What is dangerous? Where are the dependencies between elements? What are the penalties for getting it wrong? Are the right questions being asked?

The transformation stage requires a shift of gears. The territory of the problem has been mapped. Operative words here are: eliminate, combine, simplify, transform, modify.

"This is the stage when objectives, brief, and problem boundaries are fixed, when critical variables are identified, when constraints are recognized, when opportunites are taken and when judgements are made. [It is] pattern-making, fun, flashes of insight, changes of set... Pattern-making .. is the creative act of turning a complicated problem into a simple one by .. deciding what to emphasize and what to overlook."

At the last stage, convergence, "the problem has been defined, the variables have been identified and the objectives have been agreed. The designer's aim ...[is to] reduce the secondary uncertainties progressively until only one of many possible alternative designs is left... Persistence and rigidity of mind is a virtue: flexibilty and vagueness are to be shunned."

Convergence can be done, as a programmer would say, from the top down or from the bottom up; or architecturally speaking, from the outside inward or inside outward. Often the best approach is to do both at once, and resolve differences as the two processes meet.

    * * * * *

Design today is an increasingly social art, involving multiple designers, and multiple stakeholders as client/sponsor, suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, consumer/customer, and citizen groups and government agencies concerned with a shared environment, all get into the act. Individual design geniuses now must learn to communicate and negotiate effectively to succeed in the current enterprise environment.

Advances in the capabilites of engineers and engineering tools must be matched with advances in techniques for resolving a broader range of issues and demands, and more effective communication skills and design transformation skills among designers and design managers.

Computers will drive the role of humans in design to the earlier stages - divergence and transformation - of the design process where flexibility, intuition, and soft-focus attention are required. Knowledge base systems will take over the convergence stage, kicking the problem back to us only when discovered contradictions force re-evalution of design goals. The iteration of complete designs from a given design problem definition will become faster as our knowledge base improves and as computer power increases. As the speed of iteration increases, a threshold will be passed where qualitative changes in both design and designing will result.

"Design Methods" is a seminal book which was widely credited with stimulating fresh approaches to design thinking. It will continue to be recognised as a classic work, and a useful text kept handy by every drawing table, CAD system, and engineering manager's desk.
