2 comments about Dreams Through the Glass: Windows from Bergdorf Goodman.
- If I won the Lottery tomorrow, I would use some of my winnings to buy copies of this book for ALL of my artist/friends. Blessed to be a mere
two-hour train ride away from Bergdorf's window displays, I consider "the windows" to be every bit as inpsiring and informative as the Fine Art exhibits in NYC museums and galleries. Best of all, they are Public Art, available to anyone who passes. This book, full of beautiful photography, will deeply inspire and inform anyone who loves to open their mind to the creative possibilities of every object, shape, texture, surface, and color. If you are an advocate for "More is more",
this book will affirm your belief in visual abundance and lavish excess;
but also remind you of the charms of "ordinary" objects. The text, by Linda Fargo, gives the fascinating backstory about many of her window displays and reveals her design approach and (many!) enthusiasms. Fargo is a New York City treasure, and this book explains why. Treat yourself!
- This book is a gem of a resource guide for visual artists (or anyone responsible for retail displays). Fargo's innovative approach and resourceful applications as well as entertaining descriptions give us a unique view of her creative process. She uses everyday objects in unexpected applications to ensure that her "sidewalk shadowboxes play on the stage of world-class theatre in a world-class city."

1 comments about Tai Soo Kim Partners: Selected Works (The Master Architect Series, 4).
- Tai Soo Kim's work is wonderfully illustrated in this comprhensive overview of his firm's work. I would advise anyone interested in contemporary public Architecture to take a look at this publication - it's well-worth the purchase. Of the work shown, I'd say I most prefer the home of Tai Soo Kim, to me a modest yet sensitve design that clearly illustrates the enfluences of his previous employer Phillip Johnson, as well as Mies. - A good book...

4 comments about The Illustrated AutoCAD 2007 Quick Reference (Illustrated AutoCAD Quick Reference).
- I am taking a Online AutoCAD course and have found The Illustrated AutoCAD 2007 Quick Reference (Illustrated AutoCAD Quick Reference)to be an excellent to find skill items fast and easy. For the person that is into AutoCad for personal and/or business reasons it can be a great investment for your inventory of manuals that can be quickly access.
- this amazing, alphabetized encyclopedia of CAD commands makes following the steps of CAD drafting so easy! look commands up by name, or use the index and search for a command by relating it to a desired application.
Easy to use, a relief to have.
- I'M NOT SURE IF THIS BOOK SHOULD BE QUALIFIED FOR AMATEURS OR INTERMEDIATE USERS. THE TITLE IS COMPLETELY RIGHT. IT`S A QUICK (AND VERY COMPLETE)REFERENCE WITH COMMANDS' GUIDELINES, SO THE EXPLANATIONS ARE VERY SHORT AND CONCISE. BEGINNERS WILL HAVE SOME TROUBLE WITH THE USE OF THIS BOOK IF THEY DON'T KNOW THE EXACTLY APPLICATION. THIS BOOK ALSO CONTAINS INFORMATION ABOUT SYSTEM VARIABLES NOT LISTED IN OFFICIAL'S MANUALS. IN THE RIGHT HANDS AND MINDS, THIS ITEM CAN BE A POWERFUL TOOL FOR IMPROVING CAD TECHNIQUES AND DEVELOPING ADVANCED IDEAS. REGARDS.
- This book is very helpful, the cover is a nice shad of ble and the pages are great quality. It's very helpful and full of valuable information. The instructions are very clear.

2 comments about Home: Design and Architecture from Prehistory to Today.
- I purchased this book online for my bro in law for Christmas. It was a big hit with the whole family. Everyone passed it around. The book arrived on time and in good sealed conditio.
- A quick flip through this book and you could easily think that you're looking at contemporary Case Study Houses. Surely one of the criteria of those wonderful homes designed five decades ago was the skilful use of interior space. The 120 buildings in this book continue that theory.
This is a huge thick book (at about nine pounds) beautifully printed and designed with excellent architectural color photos throughout. The homes, all built, more or less, in the last ten years, come from twenty countries with the US (especially California) Australia and Europe predominant.
The first few pages dealing the concept of 'home' over the centuries I thought rather superfluous in a book about modern homes. The rest of the pages are divided into sections: In the city, Outer city, Future city, In the country, By the water and finally In your dreams. Dreams includes, for instance the Foster designed Chesa Futura, Wallace Cunningham's Crescent House and the S.A.O.T Architects Saint Leon House in Cape Town. Dream commissions by any standards. The back pages include comprehensive biographies of the architects.
All the homes in the book have several photos and some general text and captions but it is the large photos that I liked, with several stretching over a spread. The floor plans that go with the buildings are not quite so successful as they tend to look as if there have been fitted into whatever space was left on the page. They also vary in graphic style and are frequently minus text to explain what rooms are what.
Overall I thought this was a wonderful book on probably the best of contemporary homes around the world and is just the sort of title that will appear on a table in a future photo of a modern living room in an architectural magazine. Incidentally the book has been produced by an Australian book packager and as far as I can tell it does not seem to be available everywhere (least in the mainstream American book market) but don't let that put you off searching it out. I bought my copy new and at a very reduced rate from the cover price, a bargain!

1 comments about Aldo Rossi: The Sketchbooks 1990-97.
- What better book to show an architecture student, design student, or even professional designer the virtues and power of the hand? This is a small and compelling book that does not explore, but states clearly the relevance of drawing in Rossi's design process. Though the format of the book is small, the reproductions of Rossi's works are large enough and of high enough quality that we can clearly follow the craft and intuition of the initial responses and investigations of particular design problems. Rossi's drawings are intuitive, playful, and always based solidly in the knowledge of the fundimentals of orthographic, perspective, and axonometric design drawing as well as the subjectivity of gesture. In his drawings, the process, not the product, is paramount. For an instructor of design or drawing, they are wonderful for student analysis. By dismantling and revealing the underlying structures of the visual language that Rossi employs, students and designers alike will be inspired to return to paper in a much more rigorous way to explore the moments between thought and expression that perhaps only drawing can afford. Whether you are a fan of Rossi or not, this book is a great addition to a personal or school library.

1 comments about Graphics for Architecture.
- For architects-to-be and architects alike, this is the VERY BEST DRAFTING BOOK presently (11-06-07) available on HOW to draw (draft, as we call it in the architecture profession).
Drafting equipment and getting a feel for these tools and the linework they produce is thoroughly explained and illustrated; then, orthographic, axonometric and perspective drafting techniques are just as thoroughly illustrated and explained using some familiar shapes and forms, but, crucially, many NON-FAMILIAR shapes, forms, object positions and views from many angles - shapes, forms, positions and views that can ONLY be accurately drawn by knowledgably utilizing the techniques so well explained in this text BECAUSE they are unfamiliar.
Though a few simple architectural objects (houses) are one of this book's illustrative vehicles, the book does NOT really intend to teach you WHAT to draw - what architecture and construction are and how or why they go together the way they do - nor should it; acquisition of that knowledge is unimportant at this point and can come later. HOW to draw entails alot of concentrated and sustained visual, hand-skill and, often, mathematical effort. Once you really learn what this book teaches, then you will be ready to turn to learning about WHAT you wish to draw and begin drawing that whether it is airplanes, automobiles, machine parts or assemblies, watercraft, manufactured products, packaging, fashions, sheet metal patterns ... whatever. These and many other industries require the sophisticated visualization skills and supportive mathematics that HOW to draw entails; and this book, with a nod to architecture as a vehicle, teaches this better than any other (Even better, for this purpose, than Frederick Giesecke's almost 800-page Engineering Graphics, sorry to say, though, except for it's length, Giesecke is a close second). So, if you're serious about developing real drafting skills, you need this book to guide you and serve as a continuing reference. If you merely want to get by through mimicking familiar forms, thinking you know how to draft, other drafting books may do ... sort of (though I cannot recommend one).
In addition to being an architect, I teach architectural drafting at our local community college. You should know that the HOW to draw knowledge, visualization and hand skill base is no easier to learn within a computer-aided drawing (CAD) program than by using hand tools and drafting paper. As most typically taught, CAD assumes that you already know what this book teaches; if you do not, then you must learn what this text (or it's equivalent, if you can find such) teaches - whether on CAD or by using hand equipment. CAD only makes it easier to draft what you already know how to draft; there is no shortcut to learning HOW to draw (draft).
