1 comments about Learning Inventor 9: A Process-Based Approach.

  1. I would like to say that this is a very good book and one of the best of those books that I have studied for Autodesk Inventor. It covers basic and advanced steps in modeling. Also I like their approach "Process-Based", this tells that this book does not explains only features of Autodesk Inventor but also tells in details the process to create parts and assemblies. Definitely this is my preferred book for Autodesk Inventor and I would suggest to anyone that is new to Autodesk Inventor because it is very easy to understand. In this book I found explanation for a lot of questions, and I specially loved their Professional Tips.

2 comments about Bayon: New Perspectives.

  1. Bayon New Perspectives is an actuel professional work about this particular Khmer temple and is certainly of great use for professionals, sholars but also comprehensible for non-experts. A basic interest in and knowledge of this templecomplex is helpfull for the understanding of the different studies and aspects treated in this work.

To estimate the real value of this book and enjoy it completely the reader should preferably have had the occasion to visit Khmer monuments in Cambodia, in Thailand or/and in Laos or at least have read some standard works about the Khmer architecture.

  2. First I'd like to correct information errors noted above, book description say 204 pages, it's really 403 page. This is a very through review of the Bayon temple in Siem Reap, Cambodia, having been there myself, this book is very detailed in it's coverage of the Bayon in almost all of it's aspects, making me want to return to Cambodia to see all that I've missed...

5 comments about Learning SolidWorks.

  1. I don't know what John Thomas is on, but Michael Minbiole lives up to his legend status.

This is hands down the definitive SolidWorks guide of this or any generation. Minbiole's delightful prose flows gracefully yet at the right moment it bites with a rapier wit. Never before has Solid Modeling been described so naturally; it's as if Minbiole eats and sleeps SolidWorks. He totally captured what its like to solid model: the excitement, the confusion, the horniness. He's simply brilliant. I'm not the first to mention his name among better known American authors like Hemmingway and Fitzgerald.

I credit Minbiole for saving my career, and consequently my marriage. Plus he's photogenic enough to make teenage girls swoon. If you're considering a guide to SolidWorks, look no further.

  2. I actually studied under Professor Leuptow for a couple semesters and was able to work with him on the latest edition. The new manual is based primarily on the same concepts, the production of the pizza cutter, but has been updated so that the little frustrating incompatibilites should be eliminated. I learned a good deal from his book and several months later was able to use my SolidWorks skills to help at a summer internship in a Biomechanics laboratory that was primarily using AutoCAD. All in all, a good book for those starting out who want a working knowledge of the program. If you are looking for higher level instruction, you might want to turn to someplace else.

  3. The namne of the book says it all, ...Learning SolidWorks. This book is for people who wish to learn SolidWorks, it is not a book on 3D solid modeling, nor is it a book for people experienced with SolidWorks who want advanced assembly training, IT"S FOR BEGINNERS!!!! that's what the title says. right?
I have over 10 years of AutoCAD experience and I found this book to be an excellent introduction to SolidWorks. I should point out though that I had previously done the tutorial that comes with 2001 Plus. Maybe the combination of my AutoCAD (all 2D, my 3D experience with AutoCAD was 1997 and earlier, I don't even consider those versions of AutoCAD as legitimate 3D solid modeling) experience and doing the SolidWOrks supplied tutorial made this book easier to follow than the other reviewers who found it lacking.
This book is written for 2001 which is what I used, I found there to be no errors in the instructions, the few times that things weren't working right for me I went back a few steps and tried it again, everything then worked as it was supposed to.
Having taken 3 classes in SolidWorks from a VAR (Essentials, Sheet Metal, Drawing & Dimensioning) I'd say this book is the low cost way of learning SolidWorks, an excellent introduction to the power of SolidWorks. A wise choice for a person unfamiliar or just starting out with SolidWorks.

  4. Well starting out, I was using Solidworks from 2003 and this one was really for 2002. However, the programs are very similar and the Help inside of the program itself can help you to realize when there are program differences present. I must admit that I did learn a lot from this book (most of the basic features and it boosted my confidence level) but I was only able to get past half of it in total because the program kept having errors even when I was following the directions. Also, there were some steps (like in the blade chapter p.44 where Geometry-pattern actually did need to be checked) and sometimes the author wasn't very clear (like which specific origin to choose when).

The pictures and window illustrations were pretty straight-forward as was the text and I really liked the construction of the pizza cutter because it dealt with curves, revolutions, planes and assembly drawings. It was rewarding to see the object come together while following the manual.

Overall, if you are interested in a quick refresher guide to the program this would probably be a good choice. If you are a complete beginner then the book will help but be prepared for frustration.

  5. Fortunately, I didn't read the negative reviews here before purchasing this book. I'm very excited at the way this book sets about teaching me an amazing new skill... to be able to design physical objects from scratch to the point of producing drawings for a machine shop or injection molder. I just came here to order another copy for my son... I have 4 other Solidworks books also - but I'm a complete beginner and I'm not touching them until I finish this one. It's absolutely focused on teaching Solidworks in a systematic - "bs free" method. For those who complain about the pizza cutter - please - get a life. Also, the book points you to it's website to download a detailed update (18 pages) covering mostly cosmetic differences (dialog boxes) in the latest Solidworks version ... Highly recommended 5 stars.

1 comments about Curves and Surfaces for Computer-Aided Geometric Design: A Practical Guide (Computer Science and Scientific Computing Series).

  1. An excellent, in-depth treatment of the subject of representing curves and surfaces on a computer. Written in a clear expository style, it covers the mathematics and algorithms behind Bezier and related classes of curves. Contributed sections on the differential geometry of curves and surfaces provide an excellent introduction to the mathematical framework behind the algorithms. Though not for the casual reader, Farin's book is a perfect reference for the programmer or architect of computer aided design software. I recommend it highly.

5 comments about Developing Microsoft Visio Solutions (Pro-Documentation).

  1. If you really want to become an expert this is the book to have. It is full of detailed approaches to typical Visio applications.

  2. This book is worth its weight in gold if you intend to develop Visio solutions with automation. The Microsoft Website presents the entire Visio model, but doesn't compare to this book as a reference when it comes to understanding the sometimes arcane syntax of the Visio brand of Visual Basic. I highly recommend this to anyone trying to add automation to Visio solutions.

  3. If you have limited Visio or VBA experience, this book might be worth the money. But if you have worked with Visio for a while, have written VBA code in other applications, and you know how to use MSDN, spend your money elsewhere.

This book only touches basics of Visio VBA, it doesn't show any brilliant, heavyweight techniques.

  4. This is a good starting reference source for anyone interested in doing more advanced VBA development with Visio. This is not a book for the average Visio user who wants to use Visio as a presentation tool like Powerpoint.

This book lays the foundation for using Visio as an automated development tool, it introduces many of the advanced features of Visio and provides some samples. You need to have a solid understanding of VBA before you use this book.

The overall quality of the book is good. Samples are good, it has a CD that includes all samples, so you can cut and paste. The only negative that I have about the book is that it does not go into enough detail with the Visio VBA properties or the Visio Object Model.

This book is very much like a sampler platter. It gives you a little bit about everything. It is 10 feet wide and 2 feet deep. Needless to say, this book is still better than most that are available on Visio and VBA. There is another book that might be of interest to you and seems to have much compliment from other developers. Look for book by Graham Wideman.

  5. Don't let the modern-looking cover fool you. This book has been around for almost every version of Visio, and has been continually updated for every subsequent product release.

This is the quintessential reference book for Visio developers. A complete ShapeSheet and Object Model reference, this book will cover every object, method, property, event, and ShapeSheet formula you would ever want to know. In particular, much attention is paid to creating "SmartShapes", meaning using less "code", but taking advantage of the ShapeSheet and it's power to create highly intelligent Visio shapes. While most coders jump right in to coding, they do not realize that in Visio, good applications start with "shapes first", then "code later".

This book doesn't cover automating Visio's extra dll's and vsl's, like the UML, Organizational Chart, and Database Modeling solutions, but those add-ons are not really part of Visio's native object model (you'll have to dig a little harder for info of those).
