2 comments about Engineering a New Architecture.

  1. This book is an excellent summary (with wonderful illustrations)of the state of current knowledge on thin shells, fabric and other tensile structures. It is a valuable resource for engineers and architects interested in this modern, visually-striking area of design.

  2. This book was alright. I wanted to learn more about Geodesic Dome Home Living and This book was more about the Arcitecture and Engineering of geodesics. It was interesting, but I wanted floor plans and more example homes.

1 comments about New Asian Architecture Vernacular Trad &.

  1. If they reprint this book, anyone interested in architecture in asia should buy it. We had one but unfortunately gave it away-- to our architect for inspiration-- before we realized it was out of print. The pages are a visual feast, and the text is equally wonderful.

2 comments about Architecture of the Indeterminacy.

  1. Not surprisingly, a book which concerns itself with vagueness (or in this instance, the more affected `indeterminacy'), suffers from the very delimitation it seeks to sustain. It is the unfortunate habit of quasi-intellectuals to rely on self-imposed contradiction and obscurantism to conceal the fact that they really have no meaningful point of view. `Architecture of the Indeterminacy' successfully avoids position although not without first presenting pages and pages of two-dollar words trying to embellish dime-store ideas. What it lacks in substance is more than made up for in copious name dropping. Everyone from Cage to Foucault to Derrida and Deleuze get a mention by this author desperate for fashionable credibility. But the problem with this superficiality or `indeterminacy' is that it produces architecture which is meaningless. It also produces meaningless and entirely pretentious books.

  2. Lest anyone be in doubt, Yago Conde wants you to know that he and his work define the avant-garde The introduction and the table of contents contain more than twenty uses of the phrase 'avant-garde'. Other contrived chapters are titled `Inspectors of Space', `Thief of Clouds', 'Projects and Interetuality" and so on. Never one to speak directly or clearly, AVANT-GARDE designer Conde inflates the importance of his argument in overambitious jargon that is, frankly, laughable. A protege of Eisenman (no surprise there), Conde babbles on in like nononsensical prose. The AVANT-GARDE drawings are similarly contrived, but suitably absent of context or meaning, as befits this MASTER OF THE AVANT-GARDE. ( Conde, you recall is an important avant-garde artist - remember???.) OK, so he has built nothing, knows nothing, explains nothing. But don't let that stop you from recognizing the GREATNESS of this truly modest AVANT-GARDE genius. (You do know he is an avant garde genius ... right???)
