5 comments about Richard Meier Architect, Vol. 3 (1992-1998) (Vol 3).

  1. Will decrease a many help to you. But it is inconvenient for the photograph to be insufficient.

  2. Only ISBN: 1580930611 or ISBN: 1580930441 published by the Monacelli Press on 304 pages as an exhibition catalog with beautiful only B&W photos and drawings (many 3D) and minimal text.
    FROM FRONT FLAP:
Over his thirty-five-year career Richard Meier has produced an internationally recognized body of work that reinterprets and recovers the ideals of modernism. With the completion of the landmark Getty Center in Los Angeles, Meier's distinct vision has emerged as architecture that is truly for our time. This catalog, accompanying a major exhibition organized by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (and traveling throughout the world), beautifully documents Meier's career with exquisite duotone photographs and the architect's own drawings, most of which have never been published.
Twenty-five of Meier's masterworks are featured, including the Smith House in Darien, Connecticut; the Douglas House, on the shores of Lake Michigan; the Museum for Decorative Arts in Frankfurt; the Canal+ Headquarters in Paris; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona; and the Getty Center. Current projects, including federal courthouses in Islip, New York, and Phoenix, Arizona, and the Church of the Year 2000 in Rome, are also presented.
A collection of insightful essays and commentaries by, among others, noted scholars Kenneth Frampton and Jean-Louis Cohen and architect Stan Allen illuminates various formal, theoretical, and practical issues at work in Meier's ever-evolving approach to the art of architecture. An extensively illustrated chronology of built and unbuilt work completes this first volume to document the entirety of Meier's extraordinary oeuvre.

  3. The Book is Great. If you love the style of Richard Meier, you sure would love this book too.

  4. This 3rd in a series monograph by Rizzoli is a must-have addition to any serious architectural book library or to fans of Richard Meiers work. The numerous color photos are top rate, and together with a large number of drawings give a thorough overview of one of the top designers of today. The many photos in particular attest as to the successful completion of previously anticipated projects which have been in the pipeline, while new drawings herald new masterpieces to come.

  5. Do not confuse this Monacelli Press book with the latest Rizzoli book by the same name. This one is an "artsy cofee table book" with slightly out-of-focus artsy black and white photos of a limited selection of his projects, including some of his earlier houses as well as some of his latest works. Large two page photographs are shown, together with 3 or 4 smaller ones per project, in lieu of a more comprehensive exposition of their work. If you are looking for information on their current work or design ideas check out the Rizzoli books instead.

1 comments about Pewter Wing, Golden Horns, Stone Veils.

  1. I picked up this book in the remainder bin at the bookstore of the Centre for Canadian Architecture in Montreal at a good price. I had heard of the late John Hejduk from some architect friends, and was interested in how he was described to me: an architect who uses drawings, poems and travel to create a narrative framework for his buildings and proposals. "Pewter Wings" falls definately into this category; this book traces Hejduk's travels through Spain to highlight his interest in sacred spaces of architecture--churches, cathedrals and chapels in particular. More than a document of his plans and ideas for new places of spiritual awe, this book traverses the fine lines between mental and physical landscapes, arguing for a holistic approach to building design. Focusing on regional folklore, "Pewter Wings" suggests that architecture should somehow participate in- and contribute to- the mythmaking of a particular site, and ultimately act as a "poetic cohesion" to bring these places of worship to life. Containing hundreds of watercolour paintings, travelogues and poems, this beautiful book allows a narrative to unfold between these various mediums. "Pewter Wings, Golden Horns, Stone Veils" is a delicious, throught-provoking read that suggests an inspiring alternative to the traditional architectural strictures of site, form and functionality.

2 comments about Buildings That Changed The World.

  1. The first time I saw this publication was on a book fair in São Paulo and I found it amazing from the very first moment. I bought it from Amazon some weeks later and it really paid its value.

It covers the story behind each building that have become world famous landmarks.

You can go directly to a specific building you're interested in or read it throughly from beginning to end. Both ways you'll be pleased and surprised with the information provided.

The only thing that disappointed me was the very little coverage on South American landcaspes such as Machu Pich ruins Oscar Nyemeyer's Brasília

However, it's an excelente book anyway. If you do appreciate good architecture, you won't regret buying it.

  2. I was enthralled in the book. Buildings that Changed the World is a spectacular photographic adventure. For anyone that loves history and architecture it is a fantastic book to look at. Reading, however, is different. The author, understandably, has little room to explore the different intrigues of every building. There are fantastic stories to some of these buildings that are not mentioned. Again, I do understand the limited space but I would love to see a second edition to this book that goes into the buildings more in depth. The author uses the Kremlin as a whole but, I believe that the buildings individually should have been addressed. Specifically, St. Basil's Cathedral which has a fantastic history of construction under Ivan the Terrible.

2 comments about Digital Eisenman: An Office of the Electronic era (The Information Technology Revolution in Architecture).

  1. This small size book is copiously illustrated with 55 extremely high quality photos (most in color) of models, computer generated renderings, schematics (including plans, sections, perspectives, site plans), office at work, graphics, etc. The text is very clear, sharp, and easy to read despite a small print of part of it, and as expected from Birkhauser. From the publishing technical point of view this book is perfect, but its small size is not an advantage. It is a solid review of a character of Eisenman's works on example of some particular ones, or rather of some methods to produce his works. It is not a monographic review of his works, but rather a handbook with snapshots showing some techniques employing computers and models similar to those used by Frank Gehry.

  2. This book is so tightly bound you will fear ripping it to shreds just trying to open it. Once open, and it is a struggle, you will be awe-struck at the beautiful reproductions of the near-impossible structures designed by Eisenman. Galofaro cuts the architect's excessively thick theory, asking simply, "how has digital production affected his theory based practice?" As tiny as this book is, it is BIG on content and imagery. The author has not spared us his investigations - unearthing some of the architect's little known projects (many unbuilt to date). And while it is not the singular authority on the work of Peter Eisenman, it is definately an essential addition to any collection on contemporary architecture.
