5 comments about Dog Tales: Hundreds of Heartwarming, Face-Licking, Tail-Wagging Tales About Dogs (Hundreds of Heads Survival Guides).
- If you think DOG TALES is a great gift book for dog lovers, you're right. But, it makes a better book to keep.
DOG TALES is more than a compilation of "tales" to warm the soul. It's good reading. It's fun, it's sad, and it's real.
I keep my copy next to the phone. When I'm on hold, I pick it up, and take a guilt-free break. It's like sitting on the front porch with a friend.
I have to admit, I love dogs, and I, too, adopt pets.(The book begins with an adopt a pet program.) Our Ajax is half-blind, has been with us for 14 years. I love dogs, so perhaps my review isn't without prejudice. I've written a few young adult novels, and there's always a dog in them. Because as one of my characters says, they just love you without asking questions.
My favorite chapter is the"Triumph over adversity" chapter, and my favorite photo is of Maty, the three-legged, disc-catching athlete.
DOG TALES does make a great gift book, but keep the first copy for yourself--put it next to the phone or in the bathroom.
It will make you smile.

MY NAME IS LOA, Honolulu Advertiser, 10 Best Books of the Year
- I love the way this book is laid out. . . so easy to read. It's a book you can pick up, read a few pages, put it down and come back to it whenever and you pick up where you left off! As a long-time dog exhibitor, trainer, fancier and just plain dog lover, the true-life stories bring back lots of memories of my experiences with my own dogs. Dogs are definitely our best friends and provide lasting memories. It's wonderful to have dog lovers of all ages share their stories - I think almost every breed is represented in this book ... and then some!!
- Dog Tales is a heartwarming book full of stories from hundreds of dog lovers across the country sharing their dog experiences. It's a great reminder how dogs can influence human lives and how much love they bring to families everywhere. It has great tips for healthy foods, grooming, puppy training and traveling and much more. This is a must read for all dog lovers.
- Dog Tales is in an easy to read format with stories from hundreds of dog lovers. The stories are heart-warming, familiar, funny and sad.
Having recently lost our two dogs, Joy 13 and Pebbles 15 years old, it was comforting to read the chapter titled Bye, Dog in Dog Tales. We become so attached to our pets and they are such a part of our family, it is essential we go through the same grieving process as if we lost a human family member. In this section, dog owners shared how they grieved and remembered their pets.
On a lighter side, Dog Tales made me laugh. A chapter, What We Will Do for Our Pets, is reassuring that I am not the only pet owner that treats my dogs like family.
My favorite chapter is Best Moments with My Dog. I realized how many wonderful moments I had shared with my loyal beloved pets and they will forever be in my heart.
Not only will Dog Tales entertain you with numerous pet stories, it will make you aware of a bond only dog owners share.
- "Dog Tales" is another delightful compilation from Hundreds of Heads Books with hundreds of heartwarming tales about dogs. The book also includes great tips and advice on healthy foods, grooming, toys, training, and travel. As always when one hundred heads get together to give their opinions, you will be faced with choices. You the reader must choose your favorite stories and apply those tips and hints to fit your own needs and experience.
A visit to your local shelter or an "adopt a pet" event will warm your heart. This is where this entertaining collection of stories begins. The anecdotes have been submitted by hundreds of actual dog owners who share the discovery of a dog's love, loyalty, and friendship. I particularly enjoyed the accounts of Mr. Robinson, the Rhodesian Ridgeback, Buddy the Doberman, and Pepper the Chinese Shar-Pei.
Award quality photos accompany many of the stories. I fell in love with Jaxon, a Yorkshire Terrier, JJ the Frisbee catcher, and a Sheltie named Axel.
The sixteen chapters of the book take the reader on a journey from the first face licking kiss, and tale wagging greeting to the final good-bye. The adventures include the smart dog, the dumb dog, the trick dog, the hero, the handsome, the bad dog, and the almost human dog.
The final chapter entitled "Best Moment with My Dog" is filled with poignant stories that will remind you of incredible moments with your own "best friend,"
"Dog Tales" is destined to create a bonding experience among dog lovers and owners who recognize the treasure of their own personal heartwarming, face licking, tail wagging, four legged, true, and loyal friend.

- Also available in a hardcover edition (0974627909 $18.50), Dog Book by animal welfare advocate Emily Weinstein is the story of her having adopted a new dog from the local animal shelter who proved to be companionable, protective, perceptive, active, and fun to be with. Dog Book reveals how desperate is the need for canine foster homes, and the necessity of making a life-time commitment to canine adoptees (all to often puppies are return to shelters because they are not house-trained, prove to be inconvenient, chew things up, etc.); and shaving an adopted dog spayed or neutered. Wonderfully illustrated throughout by Emily Weinstein's artwork, Dog Book is one of those titles that should be a part of every community library's Pets & Wildlife collections.
- Dog Lovers gotta love this book. Weinstein captures dogs and their masters in masterful style. Her stories are poignant, moving and sometimes humorous. Her paintings are masterful. This book should be in the waiting room of every vet in the nation. Buy one for your favorite Dog Doc today. P.S. It is a shame there is no image available of the cover of this one.
- ... I have to smile myself. And nobody smiles better than a loving dog, like the blonde Lab mix on the cover of this book. For those who don't know Emily Weinstein's work, check out Moon Book and Cat Book, too. Those who do know her work will love this collection of dogs and stories, with art work from simple pet portraits to pets and owners to Impressionistic paintings, as well as some graphite drawings. The stories are specific, while the paintings are timeless works that will appeal to all dog lovers.

4 comments about Adventures of an Animal Control Lady.
- I agree with M. M. Magliaro that this self-published book has tons of distracting misspellings, punctuation errors, grammar mistakes, malapropisms, and editing problems. When I came across a word that didn't make sense within the context of the sentence, I made it a game to try and figure out which word the author actually had intended to use!
However, looking past the errors, I found Bowerman's book to be really charming and funny. She has a wonderful sense of humor, and an extremely positive outlook on life. Bowerman is clearly a "salt-of-the-earth" kind of person, with a good and loving heart. The stories she has to share with the reader are informative, entertaining, and act as small windows into animal and human nature. Her "adventures", struggles, and joys experienced on the job also illustrate her growth as a person and as a city employee.
What is especially interesting to me is the fact that Bowerman created an animal control department from scratch, despite a heck of a lot of opposition and interference from others. It's amazing that she never gives up! Bowerman uses common sense in her work and an instinctive understanding of animal (and human!) behavior. She acknowledges when she makes errors in judgement, and she clearly learns from them, becoming a better animal control officer as the years go by.
The author's simple black & white drawings that accompany the text are charming, as well.
I would recommend this book, but only if one is willing to excuse and overlook the book's need for a proofreader and editor!
- At first, it appears that this little book would be a nice collection of personal accounts of an "animal control lady" as the title implies. And it tries to be just that.
However, be aware that this book is self-published. The grammar and spelling mistakes are so bad that they actually make the book a chore to read. I am making no exaggeration here. It is almost impossible to find 3 sentences in a row anywhere in the book without a serious misspelling or completely garbled assemblage of words.
We are not talking petty grammar "fine points" here. I am talking about bunches of words that are almost unconnected.
This makes it very hard to even understand what the writer is trying to say.
In fact, the writing is so bad that it is, frankly, comical.
As for the stories themselves, they are bland, rambling streams of thought with little to hold the reader's interest. A typical story kind of bumps along and then spontaneously ends with no point, no conclusion, and honestly, nothing to remember.
The way the book reads, it looks like these stories were originally quick notes jotted in a personal journal in a rush while handling animal control cases. That may well be. It was a really nice idea.
But honestly, the whole book needs a complete rewrite to turn it into actual prose, and to pare down the 562 pages to about 100 that actually contain interesting material.
- This is a heart waming book.
A must read for all animal lovers. A true to life story.
- This is a wonderful book. Down to earth and heart warming.
A must read for any one who loves animals.

5 comments about The Cat Who Couldn't See in the Dark: Veterinary Mysteries and Advice on Feline Care and Behavior.
- This book was an amusing and enjoyable read. The vet clearly likes cats, and it comes across in his narrative. The biggest difference between his stories and the Herriot books is that Dr Padwee couldn't seem to decide whether to write a book of amusing anecdotes, like Herriot, or one of basic veterinary advice. It works better as a book of stories, as the advice has a tendency to get a bit preachy at times.
From what I can see, what the other reviewers seem to be objecting to is that Padwee is pro-declaw and pro-indoor/outdoor for his patients. As a veterinary technician of 15 years, I found nothing wrong with his advice or opinion, just that it differs from mine in some areas. The other reviewers seem to ignore the fact that Padwee began his practice in the late 60s or 70s, and declawing was pretty defacto for indoor pets back then. He wouldn't have much of a practice if he refused to do it. Several also seem to have not paid very good attention--he also recommends spaying and neutering, plus vaccinations for Leukemia and Rabies, even though a vaccine for Leukemia was only developed in the 80s. And indoor-only cats are a particularly American affectation--cats in the the rest of the world, including Europe, are 95% indoor/outdoor. Several of his clients are determined to have exotic pets, or to breed their cats, despite his recomendation to the contrary--he still treats them with respect and understanding, and still cares for thier pets. Would he be a better veterinarian if he treated them with disdain and condemnation for their decisions? No, he would instead be a vet that *I* would not want to go to, nor work for. Like any MD, his own prejudices or opinions don't matter if that's not want the owners want--he has to treat the pets, not his opinions. Anyway, I do recommend this book as both an amusing afternoon reading and a good book full a bits of advice. Anyone who loves cats should get anjoyment out of it.
- I find books like this usually difficult to read. But this one is different. I couldn't put it down. Padwee shows the concern of a compassionate and lover of cats and people. It is nice to know that a vet like this is out there. The stories are warm and clear. I wish he would write more of his adventures and interactions. His writing is very easy to get in to and become apart of... Thanks!!
- I hate to say it, but a lot of advice in this book is downright wrong and some of it is actually bad for your cats. If you love your cats, keep away from this book.
- After reading this book, I feel Padwee is a disgrace to the veterinary profession and a disgrace to responsible cat ownership. His advice and comments are totally irresponsible. He recommends declawing among other unbelievably shameful advice.
I find it amazing that this book was even published and I pray that the publisher gets enough negative mail so that this author can never put out another book. If you want responsible, compassionate, accurate information on cats, there are several good books available. The two best authors on cats are Pam Johnson-Bennett and John Wright.
- There were no options to give this book NO stars, so one is recorded. I agree with the other reviewer who addressed the declawing issue. Further, the author then condones permitting both declawed and clawed cats out of doors without supervision, in his neighborhood of practice, Manhattan. He speaks fondly of other "patients" - nondomestic animal kept as pets, a pregnant cat who was a "school project" for a group of private school girls (the girls were being taught that indiscriminant breeding is ok, rather than about responsible pet ownership and spaying/neutering), and another cat that was taken back to the farm where she was found as a kitten, so that she could be mated with a feral male from the barn. No discussion of feline leukemia or other deadly and contagous diseases was included here, let alone cat overpopulation, or any concern for the stress and the fright this young cat must have felt being abandoned on the farm for several days until she was mated. He speaks of the humane care this cat received throughout her pregnancy, yet doesn't address the inhumanity that allowed her to become that way. This book is full of offensive ideas to any responsible pet owner. I have asked my public library to remove it from the shelves. For understanding of cat behavior and needs, please look to Pamela Johnson, Roger Caras, or Anitra Frasier - or many other fine authors, but don't look here.

2 comments about Memoirs of a Pet Therapist.
- Warren Eckstein and Denise Madden, both self-proclaimed animal lovers have outdone themselves in composing their new book.
It is a personal, funny, sad, and loving look at Warren's colorful life. He is unlike other celebrity dog trainers. He is progressive in the way that he approaches animals and way ahead of his time in his attitudes toward animals. This book captivates his love of animals, his experiences both as a child growing up in New York's Long Island and as an adult training celebrities' animals. Warren's autobiography is entertaining and delightful. His love of animals and animal welfare comes accross very clearly. He is definitely not like his colleagues who talk the talk, but don't walk the walk. I hope that you will enjoy the book as much as I did and think of giving it as a gift for that animal lover in your family.
- It has been a lot of fun going down memory lane with Warren and to hear all his tales about the famous and infamous people and their pets that he met in his travels. How nice and thoughtful of Warren to share these very personal and poignant moments with his readers and fans. Whenever I read a book written by Warren I feel as though I am having a personal chat with him over a cup of coffee or a bottle of Schlitz ! While reading this wonderful book I have caught myself laughing out loud and I have also been saddened and brought to tears. This has been a true education for me as with all his books and I really appreciate all the hard work and love Warren and Fay, and now Warren and Denise have gone through to help God's creatures. In reading the book I feel this is a tribute to Fay and a healing for Warren. A wonderful tribute to Fay and all her hard work on behalf of the animals and her love for Warren. Yes, the circle certainly from his wonderful parents who gave us this wonderful and caring man work to Fay and now to Denise.
