  2. My family and I were comforted by this wonderful book at a very sad time of our lives. It brought a smile at times when reading some of the different quotes from people who understood how we loved our dear dog. She was a member of our family a very important member. It was a great help. Joan V.

  3. My wife and I lost a Brittany Spaniel that was our child! This beautiful book has brought my wife and I a great deal of comfort as we try to cope with the amazing void "Morgan's" passing has created. A highly recommended keepsake!

  1. This is the best book on animal-human relations to come out since country vet James Herriot opened the field with his charming "All Things Bright and Beautiful" series. Naysayers of the bond between people and their pets should take a close look at all the new research coming out of medical schools on companion animals and how their owners live LONGER, happier, safer, healthier and more prosperous lives. The pets in our midst give us their unconditional love and we are better people because of it. Their devotion brings out the best in their owners. Don't miss this engaging and uplifting collection.

  2. Heart Songs For Animal Lovers weaves together a perfect mix of funny stories, including Hester Mundis' own hilarious account of raising both a chimpanzee and a German shepherd "with an attitude" in an apartment in Manhattan (which had me convulsed with laughter) and many other stories that brought me to tears.

Ron Van Warmer's unforgettable tale of Peewee and Black Jack, "The Oddest Couple In Town" managed to accomplish both.

There are also great quotes sprinkled throughout the book, from such diverse sources as Walt Whitman and Plato to Elizabeth Taylor.

I think any lover of animals will love this book, and I especially recommend it to anyone who is mourning the loss of a beloved pet. This book will raise your spirits and make you laugh and cry and not feel so alone. The last chapter, "In Loving Memory: Tributes, Epitaphs, and Eulogies" is especially moving.

It's a great comfort to read a book as heart-felt as Heart Songs, and to know that the world is filled with so many people who love and respect and care for animals.

Many thanks to Hester Mundis for collecting their stories!

  3. I'm usually a reader of science fiction, and I tend to get stuck in the idea that meeting members of non-human species is something we'll do tomorrow, in the distant future. This book will remind you that we already share this planet with a whole community of other spieces...and that they have lessons to teach us about love, healing, compassion, humor, and coping with loss. Who knows? If aliens ever really arrive to meet us and read this book, they'll like us...but they may decide that the animals are Earth's real intelligent life. I plan to pass along copies of Heart Songs to family and friends who are dealing with illness, marital strife, and the imminent loss of loved ones, both human and animal. The book has something to say about all these things, and reminds us that we're never alone with our struggles in life as long as there are animals.

  4. This is a gem of a book! Whether you're a pet owner or not, you're going to love this heartwarming collection of beautifully written, true life animal stories. It's quite moving to read of people's love for their pets and the devotion these animals give in return. I particularly like the way the author has chosen stories that range from heart breaking to outright hilarious. Plus there are dozens of short, snappy quotes and anecdotes about animals that can't help but make you laugh and think. Yet, it is never too cutesy or cloying.

The cover illustration is absolutely charming and perfectly sets the tone of the entire book. I heartily recommend it and plan on giving it as a gift to friends in the coming months. I just know they'll savor every page the way I did.

I can't say enough about this book and please, please, please, let there be a Heart Songs for Animal Lovers Part Two!!

1 comments about Dog Stories.

  1. The photographs make this book special, although there is quite a bit of information about human/dog interaction on its pages too. The information isn't just facts - feelings and emotions are represented too.

From the 10,000 year old tomb of a woman who was buried with her arm around her dog to the young people in the detention centre in California who train assistance dogs this bond between humans and dogs has held firm. The writer mentions some working dogs - sheep herders, sled dogs, guide dogs and drug sniffers but he makes it clear that most dogs are companion dogs who spend most of their time eating and sleeping.

The writer did a good job of exploring the bonding and the emotional contact between people and their dogs without too much mawkish sentiment. There was even a brief mention of the darker side of the relationship - older dogs who are abandoned by their humans.

But mostly this is a feel-good, happy book with wonderful photographs of people and their dogs. Read it to relax and enjoy.

  1. I never had the pleasure of owning my own horse or run with a wolf but T's superb writing takes you right there every step of the way. You emotionally can't help getting involved. Teresa has a magical way of sharing her lifes experiences and somehow you can relate in some area or another. Her devotion to her decisions and committment to all animals under her care should be an inspiration to all to look beyond the material and look with your heart. All creatures are a blessing and should not be ignored or abused. T's courage and deep rooted spiritualness throughout her life, making decisions that most of us would not have been able to is a tribute to her and her outstanding work.
She took her fathers teachings and her mothers heritage and combined, has passed them on to her students.
There is a Dakota proverb " We will be remembered by the tracks we leave behind". There is no doubt that next to T's tracks will be the tracks of all the animals lives she has touched and been touched by. Thanks T.....Linda (anuyi)

  2. Having been blessed enough to have had a horse in my life in my 30s, I found this book a sweet reminder and educational as well about who horses are at their very core. Teresa Martino writes with an honesty and insight that gives you the feeling you're standing in her shoes and living vicariously through her experiences. I highly recommend this book for any horse lover who honors who their horse is, not just at the physical level but the emotional, mental and spiritual levels as well.

4 comments about Living With Dogs: Tales of Love, Commitment, and Enduring Friendship.

  1. I picked this book up and couldn't put it down. It reads just like our lives are with dogs . . . flowing an interesting course, and interweaving our daily reality (which we probably spend much of stuck in the mechanical, corporate world) with joy, compassion and love. This book honors all dogs and all dog lovers everywhere with the stories and reality of who dogs are, what they've come to mean in our lives, and how they've changed us to be better people. I highly recommend this book for all dog lovers.

  2. Creative, heart-warming yet never wandering from reality, "Living with Dogs" takes us on the magical and wonderous experience it is to own, and eventually fall in love with, a dog. Written by a dog-lover and owner of a 14 year old Chow named Chang, "Living..." is an excellent book of anecdotes and stories you'll love to share.

  3. Our lives are filled with a wide array of relationships---some of which are very complicated and some of which are really very simple. The simple connections we make with nature and animals sustain us. If you have found that your dog is a simple and sustaining part of your life you will enjoy these simple, anecdotal stories of other dog-people's experiences. The book has the same uplifting characteristics as our relationships with our dogs.

  4. Cats, as a sure-sell topic, are exhausted; dogs must be next
