5 comments about Madison Avenue Maxi.
- Having a dog is no easy task. They require a lot of work and personal interaction -- talking, walking, bathing, grooming, and just plain old loving -- dogs need their people as much as people need their dogs. I always considered myself a cat person. I grew up with Mittens, our family tabby who died at the old age of 12, and since then have adopted several cats that I watched get old and finally leave the mortal coil. When we moved to Turks & Caicos I brought three cats with me from the states.
So when my husband, who moved a few months before me, started talking about this stray potcake who kept following him home smiling all the way, my first response was, "Please just don't feed it!" We had a disastrous dog adoption experience once and I did not want to repeat that ever again. Long story short, suffice it to say that Smiley's picture graces my Blackberry, we keep a supply of treats on the kitchen counter, and I now understand the "dog thing".
Elke & Ben Gazzara happened into their lovely Maxi in a similar way. Elke's daughter adopted a dog and then couldn't keep her. Ben did not want a dog in the house, and as a working actor with much traveling a dog was not convenient. But that little dachsund Maxi wormed her way into their house and then into nearly every high end restaurant, hotel, boutique, party, hospital, and several film sets along the way.
But Madison Avenue Maxi is not only about a dog, but about her people. We see Ben & Elke in good times and bad, going through health crises, career changes, unexpected travel, but always with Maxi by their sides (or under the table in a bag). It is a book that speaks to the common bonds and life experiences of pets and their humans, and while sappy at times appeals to the best in human (and canine) nature, a highly enjoyable read.
- In Madison Avenue Maxi, the wife of a movie star provides an inherently fascinating and engagingly personal memoir of the life and times of the family dog, a miniature dachshund she and her husband adopted, and offers up whimsical, fun anecdotes on how to dog became a part of their fast-paced, globe-trotting lifestyle. Any general-interest library strong in books about pets and stars will find it a fun leisure choice indeed.
- This book is a perfect gem! It is a warm, transformative story about how Maxi, a charming dog, captures the hearts and affection of a busy couple.
This beautifully designed book would make a perfect gift for anyone and certainly for animal lovers.
But readers of all kinds will love this book as it is also a fine piece of debut non-fiction writing.
- For every parent who ends up raising their child's unwanted pet. Enjoy how Maxi the dog, captivates his grandparents and becomes an indispensable part of their home.
- What a delight! In this already hectic holiday season, Maxi was a breath of fresh air. For all dog lovers and anyone who wants an escape that is both heart-warming and fun.

5 comments about Most of My Patients Wear Fur / Tales of Small Animals and Their Big City Vet..
- I wish this book had been about twice as long. It is a fun read and full of interesting and useful tips. My old American Bulldog hates having his nails done and I "patted him on the head and gently blew in his face" and he was completely calm. Who would have guessed!! Please write more Dr. Cohen!
- I gave this book to a fellow animal lover whose 94 year old grandmother has yet to put it down. She reads excerpts aloud to everyone who comes to visit.
A wonderful read for all ages.
Thank you Dr. Cohen for this heart-warming insight into the world of a "big city vet".
- This book is entertaining (who doesn't want to know what happens in a vet's office?) but also informative, and it's sprinkled with important facts about caring for your animal. Highly recommend.
- I purchased this book by chance and I have to say that I loved it. The great short stories are easy to read and educational; my 17 month old son loved it and kept bringing it back to me to read more and more. I am an "animal person" but this book taught me so much more that I think anyone would ever tell. Dr. Cohen's no nonsense tell all approach was so comforting and down to earth. I highly recommend this book to all even if you're not so into animals.
- I absolutely LOVE this book! Dr. Cohen's book is filled with so much VALUABLE information; you can actually help protect and keep your pet safe and healthy by reading this book. Even if you don't own a pet, you will be entertained by the amusing stories, and you'll impress your pet-owner friends with the information you will be able to share.
Some stories give you an inside look at what goes on in an animal hospital (VERY interesting!), and other stories tell about some amazing experiences in the life of a veterinarian. A very funny story about an Iguana had me laughing out loud, while reading about the hectic rush to save a dog who ingested poisonous antifreeze had me on the edge of my seat!
The entire book is an enjoyable, easy read - I almost felt as though Dr. Cohen was sitting across from me, engaging in a good conversation.
Highly Recommended!

5 comments about Wisdom of the Animals: Communication Between Animals and the People Who Love Them.
- I am not a non-believer in animal communication. I believe whole-heartedly that animals can communicate, and that we can truly speak to them with our minds and hearts. This is great book material, and of course, the stories are moving. But having met with the author Rapheala Pope, in person, I really question her ability to intuit my animal or even me as a pet owner for that matter. I found it paradoxical after reading this book. The contents of this book sold itself to me, and I couldn't wait to meet with her. The person I met with did not seem like the same person who wrote this book! My dog has some serious behavioral problems, and I've worked religiously with her for the last 2 years. I love this dog with all my heart and soul, and I really would do anything for her. Rapheala had the audacity to ask me if I would ever consider "giving her away" because she felt we "were mismatched." This I felt, was ludicrous. This dog would surely be euthanized if it did not have such a dedicated owner as I. I am well educated, and have researched extensively the causes of behavior exhibited my companion animal, and was quite surprised that Raphaela did not "pick-up" on this. The gardener at my local cemetery said to me the other day "I can tell you really love your dog." I find this amazing that a telepathic animal communicator could not even read something so simple as the obvious dedication I have for this animal, and offend me so greatly by suggesting that I should perhaps consider giving her away. She could not have been further from the truth in her feeble attempt to intuit ANYTHING about our relationship. In relation to the book, of course it is great reading material, and I can see why dedicated animal lovers would want to purchase it. But then again, how would a book filled with experiences like mine fly off the shelves? Of course this is a very subjective review, but this book was the initial reason I sought-out her "intuitive abilities" in the first place. I may be a believer, but not in Rapheala Pope.
- I first heard of Rapheala (when I still lived in Hollister, CA) through my mother, who is a friend of a friend of hers. I arranged a day with Rapheala, who came to my barn & spoke with many people. She is amazing! There were a few "non-believers" that day who left believers in a BIG WAY. And one who heard something they didn't want to hear, but years later realized the truth of what she had been told. If you have EVER wondered "What IS my cat trying to tell me" or had any similiar questions about the animal friends in your life, this book is for you! Talk about getting a new perspective, not to mention the laughs, insights and ok, some tears. And to anyone who's lost beloved pets, and wants to believe they are still alive in spirit...here's your proof! And, if you see this Rapheala, expect to hear from me soon...my mare is going to be a mommy!
- Wisdom of the Animals is among the first to go beyond demonstrating the validity of animal communication and recounting consultations for kitty potty problems and the like. For this book, the authors seek out wolves, whales, dolphins, and wild birds to learn about their lives and the impact of humans on them and the planet. They speak with domesticated animals too. The authors convey how horses, cats and dogs perceive human habitats and foibles.
Wisdom of the Animals is unique for another reason. The readers see the process of learning to communicate with animals mirrored in the authors themselves. Elizabeth Morrison is much newer at it than Raphaela Pope. She shares her process of building confidence, learning techniques, and receiving clearer and clearer information. Animal communicators in-training will benefit from reading what Elizabeth and Raphaela receive from the same telepathic conversation. Best of all, this book is a heart-opening and heart-warming read. It was a treat to spend 240 pages in the company of two such wonderful people!
- I was moved to tears as well as smiles by the stories in this wonderful book. I couldn't put it down until I read the very last page. Anyone who appreciates animals, anyone who has ever felt a connection to a favorite pet, will find a wealth of wisdom in this book. You'll never be able to look at animals in the same way, and you'll gain new insights into their behavior -- as well as your own! I highly recommend this book.
- If you are an animal lover, you will find great pleasure in reading this warm and delightful book. Humans have known for years that we have the ability to communicate with animals, and psychological studies will prove that animals definitely are capable of communicating among themselves. We, as humans, can also learn much about life from our furry or feathered companions. Inhabitants of the animal kingdom need no manuals to teach them how to raise their young; they are masters at providing food, shelter and love; they are ingenious when it comes to calculating how to get themselves out of uncomfortable situations, and they most certainly know how to live within their means. They intuitively know the difference between what they need in life and what they want - their "wants" are few.
This book reminds me of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" books pertaining to animal and pet lovers. Here you will also find wonderful stories about cats dogs, birds, dolphins and whales which will warm your heart and make you want to hug your loving animal companion just one more time while he/she is still with you to enjoy and enrich your life. Though their time on this Earth is brief in the universe's overall plan, they are ours to love, cherish, and nurture. In return, they make us feel loved, needed, admired, accepted, and constantly remind us that we are never alone. As humans, we are truly blessed with the gift of animal friends both for their love and loyalty, and their intellect and creative wonder. The last chapter deals with the art of talking with animals. While I found this chapter to be interesting reading, I was not as impressed with this section as I was with the stories. For that reason, the book "lost a star" in the rating. There are several more in-depth books in print based on animal behaviour and psychology that explore the animal-human relationship and communication in greater detail, based on scientific research. In addition, communication between humans and animals is based, to a certain degree, on the individual bond between the two of you. There is no hard and fast rule that says this method will work and this one will not. The animal world is like the human world, each is individualistic in their own special way, and some feelings simply do not need to be put into "words." Look into your dog's eyes as he lays quietly beside you. You do not need to be an animal psychologist to understand the love both of you feel for each other.

5 comments about Bear, Heart of a Hero: The Story of a Man and His Ground Zero Search and Rescue Dog.
- Poor bear! This man lead an 11 yr old golden retriever (if he was a true SAR dog, should have been retired by then) to ground zero. Scott as well as Bear was not a rescuer, Scott is not a Captain of anything other then his own private boat. He admitted to his fraud charges in March and should be sentenced shortly. Rescue workers during Katrina and WTC did not have time for photos and utube videos. They were there busy saving lives. Shame on you Scott!
- I read this book and wept at the bravery and sacrifice of Scott Shields dog, Bear. But after hearing that the story was one of mostly made up facts, I can only justify giving this book this rating. Shame on you Scott Shields for sacrificing your "beloved" Bear for your own personal gain.
- My husband and I purchased the book as a gift for our son to read on our vacation to Marthas Vineyard. It is a loving tribute to Mr. Shields golden retriver Bear and his mother Honeybear. It highlights the darkest days of September 11,2001 but it also speaks to the loving bond between a man and his dog. This is a story for the whole family. I have now purchased several more copies to donate to our school and our library.
- It is obvious that Nancy West is a very clever and talented writer. Her ability to infuse Scott Shield's story with pathos and make a heart-rendering portrait of Bear is impressive. Too bad the character she chose to write about has turned out to be so much less than her words and book suggest. Her central character Shields has turned out to be a teller of tall talls in real life, and uses this book to misrepresent himself as a "great hero" of 911. Mr. Shields should stick to the facts of Ms. West's book and stop inventing stories such as "commanding" search teams at Ground Zero, calling himself a "Captain",saying that his dog made live finds and saved the most victims at 9/11.(Good grief even this book says he was only there for 3 days!) This guy even introduces his current untrained dog, Theodore, as Bear's son and parades him around in a search vest. Mr. Shields should try reading his author, Ms. West's, "notes to the reader" on this page so he can learn the facts of his own story. Please, Mr. Shields, stop trying to deceive the public with your tall tales. I give Ms. West's writing "2" stars. Shields character "0"
- This is a great book about Bear (and Scott Shields) and how they happened to be at the WTC site shortly after the 9/11 attack. The work they did for some time. People that have their doubts about this book should first of all read it from cover to cover and than check the many references this books gives. I strongly doubt that any of the "nay sayers" have actually done so. Unfortunately there is a lot of "hash-wash" going around the Internet about 9/11. This book is a great account of somebody that has been at the sence and wrote about it. Confirmed by other people that were there and sacrified their time and as many of them have learned later, their health...

5 comments about Everyday Heroes: Extraordinary Dogs Among Us.
- I'm a sucker for stories about dogs, whether fiction or non-fiction. If you also fall into that category, you'll enjoy "Everyday Heroes." This short book consists of brief "biographies" of dogs who provide great service and love to their masters. All of the dogs in these true stories were raised by volunteers from a great organization called Guiding Eyes for the Blind. Some of the dogs are not quite suited to life as guide dogs, but are perfect for crime fighting work. All of these dogs are truly heroes in every sense of the word.
- I am a owner of a black lab and I got this book. I fell in love with it. The stores of these dogs and what they do to help touch so many lives. Please get this book and read. Some will make you cry.
- "Everyday Heroes" is filled with wonderful true stories of Guiding Eyes for the Blind's special creatures; those who have become successful guide dogs for the blind, and those who decided on a career change, be it drug sniffing, assistance, or therapy dogs. As the blind partner of a guide dog featured in the book (my second guide, Merlin, who has since passed away), I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Sherry for including our story in this lovely book- it is truly a tribute to my faithful friend. Anyone who loves dogs exhibits a level of compassion which is sadly uncommon in our world today- read this book, and feel that compassion within its pages.
- Sherry Warshauer has written a wonderful book that gives a glimpse into the every day life of some extradonary dogs. She includes a wide range of uses of these specially trained animals from Guiding Dogs to drug and arson sniffing and special needs dogs. She also beautifully discribes the role of the puppy raisers as well. She has illustrated the very real need for these special creatures and made raising them even more meaningful for me and my family.
- Animal (and human) nature and behavior at its very best!
As "Assistance" and "Service" animals are becoming increasingly visible in the community, a heightened sense of public awareness is useful and valuable. Ms. Warshauer's beautifully-written narrative, along with lovely photographs by Mary Bloom and others, make Everday Heroes a book for both youth and adults. I must add that the vignette about "Ramsey," the Guiding Eyes for the Blind dog guide who was raised by a family in New York City and is now "working" with a blind pianist in Jerusalsem, Israel, was of particular interest to me. Without hesitation, I recommend Everyday Heroes to all who love dogs and believe in the strength of the human spirit.

4 comments about Enough to Make a Cat Laugh.
- Loved revisiting Thermal and the other cats of Deric Longden. As good as 'The Cat That Came In From The Cold.'
- I do love Longden's writing. He can handle tragedy (I'm thinking here of a couple of his other books) and high humor (or should I say humour) equally effectively. And, he certainly does know his cats. The scene with the gentleman and the pen just cracks me up every time I've read it--obviously more than once. If you like British style humour and cats you'll love this book.
- This is an ABSOLUTELY delightful book to listen to! Mr. Longden's ability to give voices and personalities to animals, and especially inanimate objects is a remarkable gift. His accent is charming and the voices he gives his cats and their pets - a wire brush, a walnut [an especially ugly one] and a sultana, will have you giggling down the highway. While listening to this I went straight to see if he had any other books on tape, but sadly, he does not. I do hope he's working on another one. This would be a wonderful gift for a cat lover or anyone who enjoys a clever turn of phrase. His writing is excellent! This was one of the best books I have ever listened to - and I listen to lots! Absolutely worth the price!
- Here in Australia people love their cats. They care for them. Most have them desexed. Take em to the vet if they are sick, etc, but i find that those who have a real relationship with them are very few. Deric has the ability to bridge the gap between human and animal, to see the personality under the fur coat.
Working in an animal shelter and adopting out hundreds of cats and thousands of kittens, I applaud the men who mostly chose adult cats for their character, sadly most women wanted kittens and went for looks. Our eight cats came to us at various ages, one lived with for eight years arriving at age 17. Each had unforgettable and unique personalities and enriched the lives of the humans and other animals in this household. How incredibly lucky we were that they all lived very long healthy lives and that they left a legacy of laughter, companionship and sweet, sweet memories. After reading listening to 'Enough to Make a Cat Laugh' whilst on the net. I immediately told everyone i knew and blasted the internet Pets/Cats/Animal/Welfare groups to tell them of this fabulous book, as most books about cats are purrile and banal in the extreme. Well done, Deric, I think you are a brilliant humourist and eagerly await more thoughtful and inciteful work from your pen. I am very cheesed off that the ABC here hasnt shown your play with Thora Hird and I intend to plague them with requests. The local library has your books and they are harder to get hold of than hens teeth and i have complained loudly for more copies. I adored your cameos of people and am still laughing at the indian gentleman with the pen. How marvelous it was to find a book that presented our beloved cats as they are, warts and all. With sincere best wishes to you, your wife and family and any cat lucky enough to be owned by you. Lori Holland

4 comments about Bailey Bymyside: Golden Lessons for Life (Howell Reference Books).
- i have actually read this book 3 times....what an enjoyable read and a time to reflect....want to feel better---buy a copy and you will immediately cheer up (with a few tears shed along the way). of course i'm a bit prejudice, believing that golden retrievers are our gift from heaven....
- Anyone who owns a Golden Retriever will see a little bit of Bailey in him/her. Patricia Burlin Kennedy has been able to put into words what so many of us feel in our hearts. Anyone who reads this book will "feel" the connection that these four legged creatures have with us. You will smile, you will cry and hopefully, you will pause to think about these life lessons and promise to be a better person because of these reminders. Please buy this book for your children and encourage them to live by Bailey's example.
- Bravo! Kennedy and Christie have done it again. "Bailey Bymyside" is not simply a book about the amazing life of a fine Golden. It is a spiritual journey that will teach the reader some of the most important lessons life has to offer. Each page carries a profound statement with a glorious accompanying illustration, that will make you pause and reflect sometimes sirring a tear or a "dog earred" grin. For example, the lesson "that compromise allows us to move forward together" with a picture of 2 dogs swimming upstream with a shared stick in their mouths. What an profound message in today's world! This book is really for the young and old. Pair this book with their first book, "Through Otis' Eyes: Lessons from a Guide Dog Puppy" and you will be giving the best holiday or birthday gift a dog lover has ever received!
- I received a copy of this book hot off the presses; and, I imagine that it will always remain a treasured part of my personal library. Not only are the Golden photos and situations universally recognizable, but the accompanying Golden "lessons" are truly therapeutic.
As a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, Private Clinician, and Graduate School Instructor, I utilize a cognitive-behavioral style such as that noted in Ellis' Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy [REBT]. And, it is that same kind of rational thinking that shouts out from this book. You see, sometimes us human folks fail to watch our Golden Retrievers close enough and we consequently miss the big picture. We fail to understand how our furry companions are so proficient at managing the ups and downs of life. Patty Kennedy's precious "Golden Lessons" do just that. They set out to help people think in a better more healthy way. And, in REBT, it is only when we are able to THINK better, that we will come to FEEL better. This FEEL BETTER book has an incredible 106 pages with 52 full-color Golden Retriever illustrations & lessons. One scene typifies what Goldens continually do for us, rain or shine. It shows Golden Bailey smiling at the family's front door as it is being opened due to someone returning home. This illustration is accompanied by the lesson: "that it's not the size of the house that matters, but the love that dwells within." A deceptively simple statement, but one that is so often ignored. How much we worry about what others think about our homes -- whether they are big enough, have the best furnishings, or are in the best of neighborhoods. Yet, when it comes down to what truly matters, it's whether you have made this house into a warm, loving 'home,' appreciating the strength and well-being that can come from such a place of love. Do yourself a favor and get this book. You certainly don't want to miss learning about Bailey's other 50+ lessons!
