Stealing Books-A Bookscout's Guide To Book Collecting
Chapter 8 - A Day In The Life Of A Bookscout (continued)
4:25pm: We stopped at the antique mall that the owner of Academy Of Fine Books Antiques And Collectibles told me about. It was close to the Clark County Library. Helen came in to look around. I found the correct booth, and found the martial arts books. I bought two books here which were Judo For Women by Ruth Horan and also Judo Self-Taught By Pictures by Klingerstorff. The Judo For Women cost me $10 and the other book cost $6.50. As I was checking out, Helen called me around to the other side of the counter to show me something. When I got there, she pointed out a topaz ring in a heart shaped setting. It matched the pendant that she wearing almost perfectly. The ring was on sale for $60. Helen said she didn’t need it, but I bought it for her anyway, partly as a thank you for coming along with me today.
4:45pm: Paperback Exchange at 4640 East Flamingo Rd. I found the martial arts books, and they had a great selection. Unfortunately, they are all priced straight off the internet. I would have loved to have found some deals on some of the titles they had though.
5:04pm: Whitney Library. It’s used book store is called The Book Nook which consists of a waist high book case about fifteen long. It is filled with mostly ex-library books about half of which seem to be young adult books. I didn’t find anything that I was interested in.
5:27pm: I am at Michael’s Books DVD and CDs. A large part of the store is filled with movies. But there quite a few books as well. I am getting a little burned out at this point so at this point I am pretty much looking for martial arts books with maybe a quick glance at other sections. There were about a half dozen martial arts books. The martial arts books here were not in the sports section, but were with the philosophy books which I found out by asking. I bought one book titled Chinese Sabre for $8 which I had never seen before. It was not in my price guide.
5:45pm: The route brings us back to Plaza Books at 7380 South Eastern Avenue, which we stopped at earlier this morning before they were open. The sign shows weekday hours of 10am-6pm. It is not yet 6pm, but they are closed. At this point in the day, I am tired, getting a little cranky, and I find it rude that they are closed during their posted hours.
6:00pm: Somehow we missed hitting the book store at the West Charleston Library. I am guessing it got lost in the shuffle as the GPS was getting confused. We also missed hitting the Green Valley Library in Henderson which I think may have been far enough out of the city that it never made it into the route to begin with. We are headed back to Pahrump for a cheap Prime Rib dinner in one of the local casinos.
