Stealing Books-A Bookscout's Guide To Book Collecting
Chapter 8 - A Day In The Life Of A Bookscout (continued)
2:50pm: Academy Of Fine Books Antiques And Collectibles. Helen came in with me to look. The store front is relatively small and was hard to spot in the strip mall in which the store is located. But it is much larger on the inside than it looks from the outside, and they have a lot of books. The books are roughly organized by category. The fiction section is kind of sorted by author. I found the sports books section, and they had a lot of them. Most of the martial arts books were collected in one spot, but they were also some mixed in amongst the other sports books as well, so I have too really look. I bought a hardcover of Aikido by Kissamaru Ueshiba. Also a little spiral bound copy of a book titled United Studios Of Self Defense Student Manual. I had seen a couple of these during the day, but this copy was cheaper, so I picked it up. Also Best Karate Volumes 2 & 3 by Nakayama at $4.50 each. Another spiral bound book called A Pair Of Jacks: Jack Dempsey & Son by Jack Hay. I also purchased a karate book that appears to be written in Portuguese titled Kung Sum???? Which cost $3.50. It just looked interesting. One of the best deals was on the book Tang Soo Do by Henry Murphy. It cost $4.50, and my price guide lists it at being worth $100. I bought a hardcover book titled The Saga Of Sock by John V. Grombach for $25, though it was lacking a dust jacket. According to my price guide, Amazon has it starting at $125. If I lived locally, I would probably spend a lot more time here. I am sure there are some absolute steals buried here, but they would take time and research to uncover. Helen was over in the fiction/literature section, and she also shares my feeling that there are certainly some bargains buried in here. The seller told me that he has a booth in a local antique mall and that he has some martial arts books there. I get the address and booth number.
3:45pm: I am at Albion Books. Helen is waiting in the car for me. They have a couple dozen martial arts books with some interesting titles. They are priced about par. I found book that I bought titled Chinese Praying Mantis Boxing Book 1. It was not listed in my home-made price guide, so I don’t know what it is worth. It cost me $7. I attempted to pay using a credit card, but they have a $10 minimum to use one. So I paid in cash. It is always a good idea to have cash with you when book scouting. Some book stores don’t even take credit cards at all.
4:12pm: Clark County Library. Helen is in the car. It’s used book store is the best organized of any of the library stores. They don’t have any sports related books at all. I scanned the fiction section which is very nicely organized but didn’t find anything that I thought would be valuable enough for me to buy and resell.
