Stealing Books-A Bookscout's Guide To Book Collecting

Chapter 8 - A Day In The Life Of A Bookscout (continued)

1:32pm: We stopped at The Book Magician. They had a small number of, maybe ten or so, martial arts books. They were located behind the counter instead of with the sports books where I normally seem to find them. Most of them were common, but a couple were interesting, and one book I hadn’t seen before. They had two pocket paperback copies of Mas Oyama’s Karate As Practiced In Japan by Bobby Lowe. One was labeled as a first edition, but I don’t think it was. I think it might have been the first printing in the slightly larger size paperback. The cover price was $1.45 which was higher than the other paperback that they had which a 5th printing and had a cover price of 99 cents. I have in my own collection a hard cover of Mas Oyama’s Karate As Practiced In Japan, which I believe is a first edition. We didn’t spend a lot of time looking at the books here, but a quick scan seemed to indicate the books were priced on the high end.

1:45pm: We are at the West Las Vegas Library. They had a little used book store, but really all it was a couple of racks of well-used ex-library books in the entry way. From my previous book scouting trip a few years earlier, I know they used to have a little room. But apparently they converted the room to other uses. I didn’t find anything that I liked.

2:00pm: We are at the Las Vegas Library with their used book store call Literary Allusions. It was a small little alcove with mostly ex-library books. About seventy five percent of the books seem to be young adult books. They did have a bunch of books written in non-English languages such as German, Chinese, and Korean.

2:20pm: Sunrise Library. The book store here is a little room about the size of a closet. Most of the books are ex-library. I bought two books. I bought a first edition of Katapult by Karen Kijewski. This was her second book. I also bought an interesting little soft cover titled Growing The Tomato In Las Vegas In Terrible Dirt and Desert Heat-A Love Story by Leslie Albright Doyle. It was just something that looked interesting. The total cost of the two books was one dollar.

I think I finally figured out what was wrong with the GPS. It was fine while were following the route, but when we got off of the route and it started recalculating, I think at that point is when it lost track of where we were on the route. And so it short-cut us on the route.
