Stealing Books-A Bookscout's Guide To Book Collecting

Chapter 7 - Selling Your Books (continued)

When storing books that are listed for sale on Amazon, I use the boxes that reams of printer paper come in. Soft cover books are the easiest to store, because they can be places in the boxes with the spine side up. You do not want to store hardback books like this as it will damage the books over time. With the books placed in the boxes so that their spines are up, they are easier to locate when I receive an order. I will cut the boxes down into three different sizes. One size will be very shallow, so that pocket size paperbacks placed with spine up, will just come up to rim. I will cut some other boxes to hold trade paperbacks when they are placed spine up. The third size I may not even cut at all, is to hold large size soft cover books with their spines up. I will label all the boxes with unique numbers such as PB-1. Then as I am listing a book on Amazon, I will store the book in one of the appropriate sized boxes, and I will enter the box number at the end of the description field as something like "SKU:PB-1" for paperbacks box 1. SKU is an abbreviation for Stock Keeping Unit.

When I receive an email with an order for a book from Amazon, I will cut and paste the address label/packing sheet from the email into Microsoft Wordpad, and then print it. After I have printed my order sheets, I will check the emails to see if any of them need expedited shipping, and if so, I write a comment at the top of the sheet for that book. Then I will click through the link in the emails to the book listings, look for the SKU number in the descriptions, and write them at top of the appropriate sheets. Then with sheets in hand, I will go the boxes of books I have listed on Amazon, and pull the ordered books. Then I will cut the address label from one of the sheets. I will fold the packing sheeting in half, and place it along with the appropriate book into a padded mailer. I will trim the excess from around the address label, and tape it to the front of the mailer using clear packing tape. I will place a preprinted return address label on the front of the mailer as well. If the book needs expedited shipping, I will make a small note on the mailer for this as well and then seal the mailer. Then I will pack the remaining books like this until they are all ready to go to the post office.
