Stealing Books-A Bookscout's Guide To Book Collecting

Chapter 2 - Where To Find The Books

Where To Find The Books
Now armed with your list go to a bookstore. As you start scanning down, you want to just start scanning the books. Start looking book by book down the shelves in the section you’re interested in, where your books would be. Just start scanning down the spines looking for books that you’ll be interested in. Any of the titles. If you recognize a title or an author, pull the book down, open it up. First identify is it a first edition. Or if it’s a book you’re interested in okay. No go ahead, look it up in your book, find out what it’s worth, if it’s in your book. But if it’s not, then you sometimes have to make an educated guess. Like in many works of fiction, it will list previous books by the author. If the author is a prolific writer, many times the list dozens of books ahead. Generally in fiction the earlier books of a particular author are the one that are worth money. If you find the list showing a dozen books there, chances are the book is not worth a whole lot of money. If on the other hand, you don’t see any books listed there, look for information about the author in the back of the book, or on the dust jacket flap. Sometimes it might say this is the author’s first novel or first book, or say the author has written seventeen novels. So you will have to judge. If it’s the author’s first or second book it might be worth money. You have to figure out if you are interested the first edition, is it a first edition?
