Stealing Books-A Bookscout's Guide To Book Collecting

Chapter 1 - What To Collect (continued)

When working on your list build it as a computer file. This way you can easily add new authors or titles as well as updates prices occasionally when needed. Then you can print it out in booklet format using software such as clickbook. I make my booklets small so that I that I can carry it easily in my pocket. I also print the list in a very small font so that I can fit a large number of books into the small booklet. If you have poor eyesight, you may need to go with a larger font so that you can read them. You will probably need to update the prices in your book every once in a while. Book prices don't change very rapidly, but they do change. About once a year would probably be okay, or whenever you notice the prices just don't match what you are seeing online anymore.

Other ex-library books that might have good resale value include large print books, or some non-fiction books that would otherwise be relatively expensive or hard to find. Books on more obscure subjects are worth a look as they may not have been printed in large quantities.

Generally, book club editions wont have any major value except as place holders, or reading copies. There are always exceptions however. One that comes to mind is an early book club edition of Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger. When Catcher In The Rye was originally released, it included Salinger’s photograph on the dust jacket. Salinger demanded that photograph be removed, and it was in later printings. However, the Generally, book club editions wont have any major value photograph also appeared on early book club printings as well. Book club editions with the photograph can sell for hundreds of dollars, far less than a first edition of Catcher In The Rye, but still not chump change. I have found a couple of the book club editions with the photos in my scouting trips. Beware, that I have seen one bookseller that had printed color facsimiles of the book club jacket with the photo, and was selling book club editions with the look-alike photo jacket. They looked real, and if he hadn’t told me they weren’t, I wouldn’t have known. A more unscrupulous seller might not have been sold forthcoming with the information.
With experience you will be able to tell many book club editions at a glance.
